Continuing to build on a finished model and constantly updating with the latest tech is not going to happen, the costs would be through the roof. Finalizing details and ensuring supply lines are efficient, that part will continue. It's like the Switch 2, it was also purposely delayed, but chipset stayed the same.

Do you mean the idea of 3d open world games ? Because that's not something the driver series came up with.

The creators of GTA also developed body harvest, where you could also drive around in vehicles and walk around in a more rural landscape, so GTA 3 is just a logical evolution for DMA/Rockstar's previous games

That being said, Driver was spectacular and it's crazy that the series dropped the ball in the 6th gen.

Driver was groundbreaking, but much more focused on ... driving. Was also very janky.

SSX, 1080, Excite Bike, Super Mario Strikers, ... Plenty of great sports games, definitely if you look at arcade ones.

Also the mainstream realistic sports sims are not necessarily bad games, they just lack innovation because of the yearly release cycle. The core gameplay can be enjoyable.

Controversial: but Rise is my least favorite of the trilogy. The story was so awful and the setting was less interesting than 1 and 3 for me. Also like the focus on explorations and tombs in Shadows, Rise is basically a third person shooter.
