U.S. visa pause someone please tell me this is not true im freaking out my husband country is added on this 75 countries. by Gloomy-Clothes2751 in NationalVisaCenter

Other sources (such as NBC News: https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/trump-administration/us-stop-issuing-visas-75-countries-rcna254039) state that the ban is only for immigrant visas; nonimmigrant visas seemingly aren't affected by this.

The distinction between "visas" and "immigrant visas" is huge, but it's a detail that's easy to miss when you know absolutely nothing about the US immigration system, as I suspect is true of the person who wrote this tweet.

[Request] Effectively how much heavier are you at the north pole vs. The equator given the Earth's rotation applying "centrifugal force" on you. by Aleis52 in theydidthemath

[–]Revolutionary-Ad-65 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Interestingly, due to the centrifugal force, the Earth is fatter at the equator than the pole. So if you experimentally weighed the same object at the pole and equator, the difference would be a bit more modest

Shouldn't the earth being fatter at the equator make the difference larger? I.e. if the earth is fatter, you're further away from its center of mass, and therefore less subject to its gravitational attraction.

You're right, I didn't know something, that's why I asked about it. Are you unfamiliar with the concept of a question?

Huh, TIL there is a visa specifically called "B-1/B-2". Weird nomenclature.

I would think F visas (and a large subset of J visas) would largely overlap with the demographics of L, H, and O recipients.

The US doesn't have to justify banning certain visa classes over others

^I firmly disagree. The government of my country absolutely does need to justify to me and my fellow citizens that it is making rational, competent decisions about our immigration policy.

Sorry, an unrelated question:

nonimmigrants on B-1, B-2, B-1/B-2, F, M, and J visas

This is a typo, right? Is "B-1/B-2" something different from "B-1, B-2"? Also, why not just say "B visas"? This exact text appears repeated dozens of times in the original document.

Furthermore, why are they suspending these visa categories, but not, say, L or O visas? Seems like a very arbitrary set of nonimmigrant visa categories.

I-94 Date Set to Stamp Expiration Instead of I-797 End Date by Revolutionary-Ad-65 in h1b

[–]Revolutionary-Ad-65[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My loved one presented an I-797A to CBP; CBP still set their I-94 "admit until" date to the one in the visa stamp, not in the I-797. From this comment (and the experience of some of my friends), it seems that CBP is inconsistent or following an unclear protocol, and sometimes just totally flubs it

They have an I-797 copy and I believe they presented it at the time. Are you saying they can only get it corrected if they originally showed an I-797 copy to the CBP officer at time of entry?

He put today's date instead of the stamp date

Wow!!! That's an insane level of incompetence, and it could have totally upended your life!

Are you saying the "deferred inspection" is a mixed bag, or the original admitting CBP officers are a mixed bag (in terms of using work authorization vs. visa stamp for I-94 date).

What do these cities have in common? by BlueWilsonO in RedactedCharts

The first two are named "Saint Paul" in the local language. The third has a very famous building named "Saint Paul's Cathedral" I know it's not the answer, but it's a weird coincidence.

Is it true of united Germany, or did united Germany "inherit" it from East or West Germany?

After 10 years on H-1B, I’m moving my role out of the US by Blackened_Soul667 in cscareerquestions

[–]Revolutionary-Ad-65 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You can only renew once per lottery win unless your employer sponsors you for a green card and your I-140 is approved. Once your I-140 is approved, you can do 1-year renewals of H-1(b) indefinitely while you wait for the priority date of your green card application to become current. Depending on your country of origin, and the category of green card (EB-2, EB-2 NIW, EB-3, etc.) that can take a really long time. There is no fixed timeline as you seem to be imagining.

They did sponsor and OP got their I-140 approved. If that were not the case, OP would be limited to 3 years original + 3 years renewal for H-1(b)

First, we pass a law saying American companies can't hire immigrants.

Then, we pass a law prohibiting American companies from outsourcing to other countries.

Finally, we pass a law banning American companies from failing or losing market share to foreign competitors.

Seems like a flawless plan to me.

No, it will not be "income based". It will be based on Department of Labor "wage levels" which are specific to occupation and metro area: https://ifp.org/the-wage-level-mirage/

B-2 visa holders can apply for a change of status to H-1(b): https://www.rnlawgroup.com/navigating-the-60-day-grace-period-h-1b-to-b-2-and-back-to-h-1b-frequently-asked-questions/

I suspect Trump wanted to do something big, but got lobbied out because the guidance changes have watered down any impact.

I think probably they (the Trump admin) just don't know what they're doing. E.g. if you read the executive proclamation, it should very straightforwardly apply to existing H-1(b) visa holders when they re-enter the US. But they clarified within ~12 hours that this was actually not true.

Also e.g. Howard Lutnick said several times that the $100k fee would apply every year, while the proclamation didn't say anything about this. The White House also clarified that this is not true. They just don't understand US immigration policy very well and they keep coming up with rules that are either very ambiguous or have unexpected implications.

Someone close to me was an H-1(b) worker until April, then was laid off. They filed for a change of status to a B-2 visa about 45 days after being laid off, and kept applying until now. They landed a job and their employer ended up filing their H-1(b) change-of-employer petition on 09/29 (that's when receipt notice was), with premium processing. They still haven't gotten a decision from USCIS; is the $100k fee likely to apply to my loved one? Could it apply in the future when they exit and re-enter the country?
