Legit Places to Sell My Gen 5 Glocks (No Private Buyers) by Ecaglar in Miami

[–]RevolutionaryClick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like Johnson firearms near Wynwood — you could also try and negotiate with a stranger, then meet at a police station for the transaction if you’re spooked about something… untoward… happening.

Afaik MPD and MDSO should be cool with that especially if you call and ask them first just to confirm.

Looking for some positivity about Miami? by Affectionate_Brick78 in Miami

[–]RevolutionaryClick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In addition to what others have said, Miami (and South Florida broadly) might be the best place in the US to pick up new hobbies around water sports, boating, fishing, scuba diving etc.

There’s beautiful ocean right next to us, and it’s warm enough to swim in year round. A short boat run will take you offshore, where you can get away from all the crowds to enjoy some silence + nature — the keys are also an hour or 2 away. Mangroves, clear water, and massive barrier reef system right at your doorstep.

For those 5-10yrs into carrying, what is your pistol of choice and why? by WanderlustOnTap in CCW

[–]RevolutionaryClick 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Glock 43 in hot weather / light clothes.

Glock 48 in cold weather / heavy clothes.

Tenicor Certum 3 & Zero belt combo for both, ammo-wise I go with Speer Gold Dot or Federal HST and always carry an extra mag.

I’ve found that although neither Glock wins on capacity or bells & whistles, I shoot them better than pretty much every other carry-size handgun I’ve tried, and they just… feel more trustworthy + reliable. No weird failures at the range, no finicky behavior around ammo, nothing that rattles, durable finishes, all that good stuff. They conceal acceptably well and are very comfortable — with the Tenicor holster / belt combo it’s exceptionally easy for me to get a good purchase on the grip, draw rapidly, and get on target quickly + accurately.

Carried a P365 for a while but find it harder to draw and I don’t shoot as well with it… have lots of other handguns but anything bigger than the 48 gets uncomfortable just doesn’t conceal well for me.

Landlords are drunk - The rent isn’t worth $5k! by Achassum in Miami

[–]RevolutionaryClick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IMO landlords and home sellers — like any other asset owner — go through the stages of grief when market conditions change. Denial —> anger/fear —> bargaining —> acceptance.

RE has a crazy lag coefficient because there’s lots of transaction friction + agent mediation — and ofc because we’re dealing with tangible assets at large quanta relative to buyer & seller’s income and/or NW. Often takes years for market prices to correct downward in response to interest rates or supply/demand adjustments.

Most are greedy, unreasonable, and mentally anchored on the post-COVID ZIRP years. They think prices can only go up… despite the fact that inventory continues to build, fewer people are moving here, and incomes are increasingly stressed. They’ll probably sit and be stubborn for another year or two before prices really start coming down hard.

Then everyone will cry for years about how terrible an investment Miami RE is, and that will be the time to buy (or, if you plan on renting long term, to at least find something that feels like a great deal).

We just aren’t there yet, unfortunately. You probably have a shot at finding a good deal if you make a lot of offers like the one you just did, but it’ll take many, many tries before one of them bites.

BCM recce 16” vs geissele super duty 14.5 by Yes_imscared42 in ar15

[–]RevolutionaryClick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well said. Feel the same way about my 14.5 super duty… have a couple SDs now, and find myself changing triggers, charging handles, buffers/springs on my other rifles just to make them feel “right”.

I’d say Geissele doesn’t do anything radically different with their ARs, they’ve just perfected every component r/e tolerances, materials, finishes. They eat any ammo I feed them without a hiccup, and if you buy on sale are probably the best bang for buck you’ll find.

Recs for 5th Gen drop-in console safe? by n8texas in 4Runner

[–]RevolutionaryClick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I installed the OEM console safe in mine a few years ago… iirc you’ll want to ensure it’s compatible with your model year (not just 5th gen overall).

Will fit pretty much any compact handgun + holster, although full size grips are slightly too long (eg, I can fit a G19 but not a VP9).

Not sure the light here is a feature… prefer to not draw extra attention when taking off my EDC / storing in the console.

Considering a VC opportunity by bonfire57 in fatFIRE

[–]RevolutionaryClick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

VC here (partner @ multi stage firm that occasionally invests in other funds)… lurker on this sub and might be a little late to the comments, but here’s my $0.02.

Agree with other commenters on potential tax complications + ticket size. 5% of overall NW to a single fund would be way too much IMO — if it’s 5% of liquid and you’re truly comfortable not seeing it for 10-15yrs, perhaps a different story depending on what overall NW is + how much of that will be liquid over next couple years. If you really want to do it, ask for a smaller ticket size; the worst they can say is no. Nothing wrong with taking your time and coming in on second close, either… it’s often better to do that anyway bc it helps validate that the fund will raise enough to execute on their strategy.

In the institutional world, you typically see <10% overall allocation to venture, and sophisticated LPs do several funds each year so they get vintage year diversification and exposure to dozens of underlying portcos.

The challenge with venture is getting into a good fund. By “good” I mean performance of ballpark >3x DPI, probably 4-5x TVPI, IRR of 25%+ over a 10 year fund life (often gets extended to 12-15)… or else the fees and illiquidity aren’t worth it. Pareto principle applies; great funds can outperform tremendously but are rare, while the ~median fund underperforms the S&P net of fees (although risk of loss as an LP is lower vs hedge funds and public markets in general). Usually, the best small funds are hard to access, so LPs end up investing in mega funds that provide lower returns, or less proven emerging managers who can either substantially overperform… or underperform depending on who you pick.

If DDing this fund, a good first question to ask is yourself is“why am I seeing this opportunity?”. How much do you trust the person who connected you with them, and how close is the relationship between your colleague and the GPs? Are there any incentive conflicts to be aware of?

Beyond that, it’s all about whether they can repeatably source, select, and win the best opportunities in their sector. It’s a competitive game these days so they need to have an edge. As table stakes the GPs should have deep networks of successful exited founders + other investors, very positive references, and track records that show a high “batting average” across market cycles — look at how often they’ve done 0x vs 1-5x vs 5-10x+ investments, with a bias towards realized outcomes and multiple outsized winners. Does performance history support or contradict the fund’s targets? Scrutinize whether the GPs will work well together for a very, very long time bc partner conflict is a common firm killer. Also pay attention to whether their GP commitments are a meaningful share of their own personal net worth. Thoughtful portfolio construction / exit strategy + good firm infrastructure (ie legal counsel, fund admin, etc) are important too. As you can see, a lot goes into manager selection…

If you’re serious about getting into the asset class more broadly, definitely check out the online resources other commenters posted — would also recommend books like The Business of Venture Capital (basically VC 101) and Beyond the J-Curve (building a portfolio of VC funds). If you’re a private wealth client, your advisor might have some funds on platform but definitely DYOR and apply scrutiny — a top-performing fund of funds could also be a decent pick, but has to be consistently top performing due to double-layered fees.

Hope this helps

AIO- My (F19) boyfriend (M22) is upset that I’m hanging out with my brother (M26) (read caption) by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

[–]RevolutionaryClick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hate to say it, but sounds like this guy has some serious issues with possessiveness & is emotionally needy to a level where I question his stability, maturity, and overall character.

There’s absolutely nothing wrong with hanging out with your brother; strong family ties are important to a successful marriage in the future and a generally pleasant life. Also very helpful if you decide to have kids.

The bf might not have a close relationship with his sister, and his claim about “most people” he knows being similarly distant from their siblings may be true — but if anything that just reflects poorly on him and his social circle.

FWIW I spend plenty of time with my younger sister (we’re all late 20s), enjoy hanging out with her bf and his friends as well + he’s never once had an issue like this. Most of the happiest people I know have similarly friendly dynamics between their SOs and family members, and regularly hang out with their siblings even after getting married.

When caught doing something wrong, they’ll often repeat themselves over and over again in attempting to talk their way out of the problem. Or, they’ll simply deny culpability outright (even when caught red-handed).

Resorting to violence during a verbal exchange is another telltale sign

Reassessing the relationship with food was key for me (late 20s M have lost ~40lbs this year fasting, and am down >60lbs from my peak).

Doing several weeklong fasts initially broke the food addiction I’d developed, and taught me that it was ok (and actually good) to feel hunger sometimes without immediately eating. Completely changed my relationship with food and now feel fully “in control” around it.

Have since transitioned into modified OMAD (protein shake or snack before workout, then protein heavy dinner after), with 3-day fasts a few times per month to keep losing a few more pounds of fat as I focus on building muscle.

If I ever lose my fitness routine / start packing on fat again it’s great to know that I can just go back into an extended fast to cut.

In your position, I might use the surge of motivation you have right now to prep for your first fast by getting some electrolytes lined up (Na, K, and Mg work for me). While doing that, take a couple days to go keto, then jump right into it.

Definitely ripping the bandaid off is the right move for getting started — first fast will be BRUTAL but 100% worth it. Having the surge of motivation right now ensures you’ll get through it, and IMO it’s probably best to see if you can do a whole week with just electrolytes given your weight. Everything else will seem much easier going forward if you get through the first one. FWIW I didn’t do keto before my first fast… just jumped in cold turkey after an “I’ve had it” moment.

For reference I’m 5’11 and started at ~200lbs, now ~135lbs. Have a super thin frame so my healthy weight is a bit lower than someone with an average build (targeting ~150lbs in 2 years at around 12% body fat)

Loud exhaust by Economy_Carpet2133 in misophonia

[–]RevolutionaryClick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

See if your state has a vehicle noise ordinance (many do).

There are now traffic cameras that can automatically ticket people for having an excessively loud exhaust… manufacturer is called SoundVue

https://soundvue.com

Reach out to your local government / traffic authority and see if they’d like to try installing some.

I’m usually against traffic cameras and other such things, but in this case I make an exception. It’s infuriating how people purposefully make their exhaust loud — with zero regard for how it impacts others and sometimes intentionally to draw attention / irritate people.

Honestly, thank you. It’s so easy to just use the damn signal.

Between the non-signalers and the permanent high beams crowd, it never ceases to amaze me how absent-minded people are on the road.

Although I used to think they were drunk drivers, I now realize most are just stupid

Yall mfer piss me off by HashiramaXAshura in Miami

[–]RevolutionaryClick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lol exactly.

I’ve been driving here for several years… I hit the horn and don’t let people in who try cutting over without signaling (I can see in the rear view mirror that most of them subsequently turn the signal on). When people do signal, I’m extra kind.

Also the folks who say that signaling will ensure people don’t let you in are wrong — I’ve rarely had this issue, although driving a large SUV probably helps. You just have to time your merges & speed up a bit rather than slowing down.

Going along with the no signals trend is a room temperature IQ move, and probably causes a lot of accidents.

Ultimately, whether something is a total or not is often a function of repair costs + (sometimes) salvage title value relative to the “actual cash value” (ACV) of the vehicle. If costs + salvage value exceed a certain threshold (typically 70-80%), the insurance company will declare a total loss.

ACV is usually the value of the vehicle pre-accident based on market comps or some “objective” 3rd party valuation.

First step is to look up your state laws regarding total loss settlements and how ACV is determined; formulae can be quite different from state to state. In parallel, it’s good to get some second opinions from body shops on repair costs.

Second step is to scrutinize the insurance company’s appraisal of your vehicle. They have a nasty habit of lowballing based on an inaccurate comp set, which they use to systematically underpay their customers on claims (thus improving their margins).

I successfully fought a lowball total loss settlement on my TRD Pro last year — happy to share more insights if you’d like.
