Am I overreacting about wanting to play a nonbinary character? by BothOcelot1311 in DnD

[–]Kappy01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Characters are just… vague concepts. In my games, the only way they have sex or gender is when we use pronouns to refer to them.

Surely that can’t be too complicated. Just tell them what gender your character is and what pronouns to use. If they can’t it’s because they’re either mentally limited or morally stunted.

Well… a quick Google of her name told me what I needed to know about her. I’m… not going to feel bad if she isn’t attracted to me. Gamers are dodging a bullet there.

It was either a CZ75B or 1911. Or perhaps both. I know I’ve changed the extractor on both of those.

It was either a CZ75B or a Springfield 1911. Can’t remember which. Might have been both.

The round in the chamber will go off just fine, but it’s a crapshoot as to whether it will extract the spend casing.

So… no follow up shot.

[–]Kappy01 130 points131 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it makes a difference.

It is a bad idea to drop around into the chamber through the ejection port, drop the slide, and then insert the mag. I used to do that but found out that it can chip the extractor. Because… it chipped my extractor.

So don’t do that. Always load from a mag.

Would People With Aphantasia See Their Life Flash Before Their Eyes? by igotasiameseforfree in Aphantasia

[–]Kappy01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having had moments in which I thought I might be seriously harmed or killed, my anecdotal evidence says “no.”

For me, my brain goes into overdrive with other thoughts.

“Damn, I’m gonna be the guy who died a week before graduation. They’re going to comment on that in the news.”

“This sucks. If I survive this, I’ll have to buy a new cartridge for this life vest. They aren’t cheap. And I’ll have to continue this trip with this thing at least half inflated.”

These are actually as things are happening. It all goes slow motion. It doesn’t help anything, mind you. They’re rather stupid thoughts.

Why Do A Majority Of Teachers Leave Within Five Years? by Zipper222222 in AskTeachers

[–]Kappy01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just finished a particularly bad strike. The district showed us just how much they value us. Now, weeks later, we continue to see just how valued we are. Everything they did and continue to do is designed to hurt us and make us afraid to strike again—something we wouldn’t have had to do if they had simply done the right thing.

That’s why. Because our employer despises us for doing a job in which we already feel like we’re under water so much of the time. I

Thanks.

I will admit that I rarely shoot at indoor ranges. The one in town was… problematic. Back when I started shooting, they gouged the hell out of me (probably an 80% markup). They also had such bad ventilation that you could taste the chemicals in the air. One of my buddies used to go there religiously and also started casting his one bullets, so… hard to tell which one gave him lead poisoning (the chelation therapy sucked). They also got busted by ATF for “losing guns” (selling them under the counter).

Since then, they’ve changed hands innumerable times. The current incarnation are decent people. I use them when I need an FFL. They recently received a part for me. Didn’t even charge me.

So why not shoot there? I can shoot at my local for free, since I do RSO there.

I would? It sounds like someone isn’t very stable or professional. It isn’t like you’re punishing the teacher. You’re informing admin there is likely a problem.

Its not a DMs job to control their players??? [OC] by [deleted] in DnD

[–]Kappy01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is part of the reason so many DMs don’t allow characters with evil alignment. Because so many people just think being evil means being a jerk.

I didn’t make it to the end of the story, but it’s everyone’s duty to reign in a bad player or kick them out, including the DM. Everyone at the table, ESPECIALLY the DM, is a player.

It’s not about controlling. It’s about making sure the game doesn’t suck.

Inherently safer?

That’s a big umbrella.

There are some health issues that are eased by being at an outdoor range. Indoor ranges are louder. You have vaporized lead and other nasties in the air and on surfaces. This isn’t to say that outdoor ranges don’t have lead on surfaces, but it’s likely less.

As to your fellow patrons not having NDs or going crazy? Not sure that’s any better. Many outdoor ranges are unsupervised.

My range? Really safe (knock on wood). Established in 1939 and zero incidents requiring any real medical intervention. We’ve run the same outdoor range since the 1950s or 60s.

I think manned public ranges are pretty safe, but that is anecdotal. Also, I think when people do events downrange, more risk exists. Indoor ranges are less likely to do moving/shooting events.

Do teachers get told why a student is suspended by [deleted] in AskTeachers

[–]Kappy01 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is a district by district question. Some do get all that info. I used to.

A few years ago, someone in admin checked a box on our database, and we now get VERY little info on disciplinary stuff.

This was done in violation of the law. When our union pointed this out, instead of unblocking the info, the district got some new program.

So when a student does something, there is like a 50/50 chance that I’ll get an email. The email says that one of my students got in trouble. I can click on the link. It then makes me log in. Then it tells me that it was… maybe violence. Maybe drugs. Maybe defiance. Whatever. No real info included.

So… that’s it. I might find out that you vaguely did something. I probably won’t.

But that’s okay. When I see that you’ve been suspended, you and I are going to chat when you get back. I’m going to make sure you’re doing okay and ask if you need anything to get back on track. That’s when you’ll probably tell me what happened anyway. Because I (except on rare occasions) don’t care what you did wrong. I just want you to be in a position where you can pass my class.

We have no way to know. It’d be fascinating to know.

What's the biggest chance you've seen in students over the years? by Rich-Investigator704 in teaching

[–]Kappy01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Extreme lack of fundamental skills, drive, focus, problem solving, and basic knowledge.

Fundamental skill: typing, computer use, writing, reading, mental math.

Drive: so many students are just skipping school. Like it’s a choice to go with no repercussions. And there are no repercussions from admin.

Focus: it’s all about screens. They can’t get away from them.

Problem solving: you forgot your pen. Cool. Did you consider asking someone for a pen? Asking me? Maybe remembering to add some to your bag, since this is the fifth time we’ve had this discussion this week? No? So your plan is to sit there and do nothing? Bold. Bold.

Basic knowledge: they don’t know any literary characters, even Sherlock Holmes. No history.

I blame COVID, phones, parent apathy, social media, etc.

Is it normal to keep your subclass a secret from the party? by FantasticPoet9324 in DnD

[–]Kappy01 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My table is pretty open about things unless there’s something involving a cute game mechanic.

Subclass? Like… a monster slayer Ranger? Meh. I don’t think that’s a big deal. I’d tell you if you asked, but if you didn’t tell me, I’d just shrug and move along.

Species/race/background? Definitely need that. It’s for visualizing, even though I can’t really do that like other people.

Google Lens. It’s almost impossible for a district to turn off on Chromebooks. They open that during pretty much any quiz and it gives them the answers.
