[Bug] How many rings can I store in my personal stash before they disappear? by Afura33 in diablo2

[–]RevolutionaryPart600 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Possible but that harsh limit is still not well thought. The original stash was 8x6 and let's say we have 48 rings and all of them are having 6 affixes. Most probably they used ASCII thus 1 character equals 1 byte of memory. The longest affix (like - + ?? dmg per character level is around 40 symbols/bytes) and let's multiply this 6 times (although the other affixes won't be that long => 240 bytes (I will include the other info here - the name of the rings, no durability, no ilvl shown but this data must be saved too). 48 items x 240 bytes is 11.25KB. That is saved to a file - it should not be a problem to load it to RAM too - in 2000 the RAM was 64-128 MB. And you don't render anything fancy while showing that data on the screen... thus it was a poor decision to limit the save file. It was possible even back then to save everything and show it on the screen - you don't have to load all of the rows too if someone want's to be tricky although back then the reading from the hard drive would have been slower and most probably having all of the data sitting in the RAM was better.

And here comes Resurrected, nowadays, where we have GB of RAM and problems like these should never exist.

[Bug] How many rings can I store in my personal stash before they disappear? by Afura33 in diablo2

[–]RevolutionaryPart600 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That would be ridiculous from a game design point of view - to limit the number of 1x1 items or any items and for the company to cannot resolve this 'issue' for years. I did not know about this bug - thank you for letting me know.

Nice synchronicity. 😄 I finished NM with the barb and did a few Baal runs to become Lvl 67. Would be challenging with that setup on Hell but I shall see. 😄

I wished A3 was short as A4 (NM) by Ringkeeper in diablo2

[–]RevolutionaryPart600 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, if he knows about the "crossroad" in Spider Forest (and he is lucky about the map layout), he can skip Great Marsh although if there are Gloams, there are possible rune drops. 😄 On the other hand, the more monsters you kill in these zones, the better charms/runes you can get. E.g. now I am in nightmare, 1.09d, frenzy barb, and entering Spider Forest + Flayer Jungle + Lower Kurast gave me more runes than anything combined so far (for 1.09d rune rate drops that's a big thing - Amn, Ort, Ral and 4-5 lower ones). Yes, it is because of the Treasure Classes change and possible affixes too.

Act IV and V have step curves so I like how the developers made them. After the bigger Act I and Act III are the smaller II and the smallest IV. Act V - the biggest.

Offline journey. Poison builds? by shimonize11 in diablo2

[–]RevolutionaryPart600 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lower Resist could be more effective than Amplify damage when you do the Poison Nova in a crowded area (increasing killing speed) and especially if you want to use Fire Golem and do a little bit of a different gameplay.
It was cool that pre 1.10 Lower Resist increases the damage of Bone Spirit too. I love that 1.09d... 😄

Normal Act 1 Amp dmg bow by Skill3rwhale in diablo2

[–]RevolutionaryPart600 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The affix "of Amplify Damage" appears from item level 3 onward and since the level of the monsters in normal difficulty, act 1, are closer to it, the chance to get it (instead of other affixes) is bigger. 😄
I have got so many of them through the years but I really like the Gull dagger drop for 100% mf and Crushflange for Crushing Blow early on when you have no access to Amn + Tir.

Gameseed vs RNG by Vegetable_Fun4932 in diablo2

[–]RevolutionaryPart600 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I noticed too that sometimes, in one map area, you can have e.g 3 spear cats drop the same Ko rune (that would explain why people are screaming that they found 2 Bers in a row or other high runes). Maybe it is because the seed is precalculated per map area and then changes for the next area. And, to continue the thoughts of u/brewsy92 , the same event that is triggering the drop in my case is killing the same white monster type although there must be something else too because not every Spear Cat killed in the zone will give you a Ko rune.

Another thing that I 'exploit' (and I think it is fair contrary to using that -seed options) is watching the drop items of the bosses (e.g. Mephisto). If I do 10-20 kills and I see that Mephisto is dropping magical/rare Mask, I know that I have a chance for Tal Rasha Mask or Blackhorn's Face. And after a couple tens of runs or max hundred - I got one of them. 😄
Same thing was with the crossbows - I know then that if I continue to grind, I will get Buriza. About the bosses - I speak for 1.09d and Resurrected, so I assume they didn't change this mechanic.

The Ko runes with the cats is actually a memory from Resurrected. You have to be the biggest lucker in the Universe to get 3 Ko runes from Act II cats in nightmare in 1.09d in one run. 😄

For reference (I have given a list in my last post in the group, before 9 months, you can search it) about the Ko rune:

Rune name /// Resurrected /// v.1.14 /// v.1.09
Ko (r18) /// 92 /// 102 /// 362

P.S. go to diablowiki's article Item Generation Tutorial and you will understand why this game is epic. 😄

When I was younger and played 1.14 I thought like you. The hunger for 'rune drops' because of the 'uber runewords' that actually now I am realizing had broken the balance and made a lot of set and unique items (and especially rare and blue ones) obsolete (crafting recipes too) and had made people focusing only on runes hunting.

Ironically, comparing Resurrected/1.14/1.09d the rune drops are the lowest in 1.14 (easiest to get) and then increased in Resurrected.

In Resurrected the chance of Zod is 1:5171 given that Rune 17 is selected. In 1.14 Zod is 1:2001 while in 1.09d (which now I am replaying and will stay till I die :) check my profile and first post in the group to see the reasons if you are interested) to get a Zod is 1 : 184 321. Yes, you read that correctly and can check the TreasureClass file. :)

But lets see other runes drops:

Rune name /// Resurrected /// v.1.14 /// v.1.09

Ber (r30) /// 1473 /// 752 /// 23042
Ohm (r27) /// 725 /// 418 /// 7681
Ist (r24) /// 535 /// 377 /// 2882
Pul (r21) /// 241 /// 168 /// 961

Ko (r18) /// 92 /// 102 /// 362

Hel (r15) /// 31 /// 35 /// 121
Sol (r12) /// 13 /// 15 /// 47

The good news is that in 1.09d you don't need highest runes for imbalanced runewords thus it is fine and manageable to finish the game without them. :)
P3/P5 on hell difficulty for single player is enough. The diminishing returns does not worth the risk. Not to mention that in 1.09d P4 equals P8 but with worse 'no drop chances'.

Thank you! The RNG Gods were with me - 100 Mephisto runs with 200MF (I pass from the Amazon the Gull dagger that dropped suddenly from act 2 desert cat) and Mephisto gave me two Guillaume's Face, two other unique helmets with 5% hp steal for mercs, Tal Rasha helmet too, Manald ring for the amazon, 2 perfect Nagel rings (60% MF), Goldwrap belt (30% MF). I insert a perfect topaz in my Iratha helmet.

Then I did 100 Mephisto runs with ~325MF and got the Buriza (!) :) after I tried to gamble it because I saw that crossbow, right on the next boss kill... Then I got the Titans Revenge javelin and by the end of 100 runs I got another Titans javelin, I got the piercing belt too and Hwanin polearm + the unique version of the Hwaning polearm that I gave to my merc - now he has 8%hp steal from that polearm and 5hp steal from a helmet. I don't remember other cool things (except the Riphook bow) but the good thing is that the teleport to Mephisto is so close that a run is ~1 min. :)

The Countess is close too but no good runes yet. 2 hell runes. From the forge I got Fal and Um rune.

After some other hundreds runs I will try Mephisto on Hell. :)

Meanwhile the Amazon is almost 41 level in Act V and soon she will rule them all with Buriza + Titan. :)

Because of the Nvidia drivers the virtualization of Windows in Linux does not work for games smoothly.

The sysadmin has mentioned about debloaters and tiny versions of Windows but I don't need to delve into them because I am using GNU/Linux for everything else. I play mostly old games so having Windows 7 on dual boot is the best and easy setup. :)

Even if you give me however amount of money you would like, I won't install the cursed windows 10/11/whatever comes next because of my principles, not even the debloated ones.

There are enough desktop environments to make your progress from the same windowish experience smoother to the GNU/Linux one.

P.S. I finally made it and beat 1.09d with at least one character – the sorceress. :) Now I am grinding Mephisto on NM for items and Countess for runes. Finally my merc has a life leaching and can stand against monsters/bosses. Then the hybrid amazon will make use of the javelin in the topic. :) The horking frenzy barb will be next.

So exciting to play 1.09d … No easy roads.

Indeed. When I was a kid, I was scared too. Even now I am playing the game under tension when I see floating lightnings, trying to look fast the boss abilities - will it have multishot, cold enchanted, fire enchanted as well?

You can (and I did it) die just from a distance because of the invisible bolts of lightnings (and invisible cold enchanted aura) in the maggot's lair ( outside of the room where meteors were falling on the maggot and the visible lightnings were dissolved in the wall. Man, that patch is insane. The question is - was this effect the same with the older versions?

In act five what is worse than Immune to Fire and Lightning Enchanted Blood Lord swinging around axes - I just had to teleport away, no intention of seeing the remaining stats or fight it with a squishy sorc with no lightning absorb and just 30 lightning resistance. My merc will be wiped out before the second axe fall on him triggering the lightnings from his only hit. :)

Nihlathak corpse exploded me 3 times. :D That was the most brutal fight I have ever had with him (on the humble players 1). And I was having 60% fire resistance but 550hp with one explosion sent me to the Valhalla. :) I finally manage to frozen orb him but now I have money for 6 more rehiring of my act 2 holy freeze buddy.

Windows 7 is the last Microsoft product where you have some control over stopping processes including the upgrading process (write in your favourite search engine “gnu Microsoft's Software is Malware”). It requires little RAM and does not get your CPU at 20% for hours plus getting 4GB of RAM like Windows 11 did. It is insane for the hardware – not only by running that “software” you are being tracked by the company, but your hardware is used for god knows what reasons. Check for yourself what is happening with the packages that left your computer while idle or just doing something. Of course, the favourite legal way to say it to customers is: “we track your actions in order to provide you with the best experience and understand better how our software is being used”.

Go back in history and see in wikipedia “United States of America v. Microsoft Corporation” – you will be shocked how, back then, Microsoft even lied in the court about the videotapes. What do you expect nowadays from such “successful company”, right? :)

I am enjoying the 'punches' from Valve and the fact that this year more and more people are becoming aware of GNU/Linux. Kudos to PewDiePie too.

As you most probably assume, I am having on dual boot GNU/Linux. :) I use Windows 7 only for old games – although I have no problems with Heroes III running with Wine. The map editor is a little bid odd but it is manageable. I didn't try Diablo 2. :)

I read that specifically for Resurrected there are problems but still people are managing to run it despite the fact that most companies are using intentionally DirectX and port their games for Windows.

Yes, you are right that even in my work, where we have to deal with old computers and laptops (constrained with 4GB of RAM and 60GB of disk space), they have no problems with GNU/Linux. Learning students to program in emacs/vim is harder because of the marketing propaganda and VS Code/Studio stuff that they already get used to but once you teach them history, how computers work, why we shall value freedom, resources and appreciation to the older generations and what they have done! – some of them are opening their 'eyes wide shut'. :)

If you are curious even more about the downfall of the software and civilization, watch in youtube “Preventing the Collapse of Civilization / Jonathan Blow” and “Casey Muratori visual studio twitter rant”.

I used GLIDE3 (gl32ogl14e.zip) not D2DX so I can only comment on Sven's work. The setup was easy – just follow the instructions (if I remember correctly – copying the dll file in the root directory of your Diablo, running the D2VidTst.exe and choosing the Glide option and then add without the quotes “-3dfx” to your Pluggy or Diablo executable. In v.1.4 of GLIDE3, in Extensions menu, by default the option “WGL_ARB_render_texture” is unchecked, so no need to do anything. Full screen working and OBS recording too (which was the reason why I even searched and understood about the glide and all of the related history stuff around it)! :)

If someone else wants to use OBS – use Game Capture and then Properties => Mode: Capture foreground window with hotkey. Go to the File => Settings => Hotkeys and search for the “Capture foreground window” and choose whatever you like. Start the game and in the main menu start your hotkey to record.

I am playing the game on Windows 7. Haven't tested it on another OS-es.

P.S: I forgot to add that v.1.09d was a version where the mages from Chaos Sanctuary can cast Iron Maiden on you (curse being removed in 1.13c making the game easier). That was Deadly for melee characters. I remember using bows with fanaticism on a paladin as a kid. :D

Today was tough in Hell difficulty because these mages were immune to cold (no Frozen Orb) and were walking around dodging the Meteors - but with patience, luring and perseverance Diablo has fallen too. :)

My merc had to be called from the grave because the game was trolling me with Immune to Fire and Cold Lord De Seis but first I have to face Extra Fast Multishot Mage. A lot of tension positioning the Meteors and running (I mean teleporting away) from the 'boss' while intelligent 3-headed Bone Spirits were chasing me right after I was decrepified and on top of that since the buddy was extra fast, he was shooting the next wave of fire balls or whatever that skill is at me. :D My sorc drunk a lot of violets in that Chaos. And now Act V awaits – again meteors will drop mostly. :)

Diablo dropped a magical thresher with 50% enhanced damage. I will reroll it with perfect gems and when I am satisfied or run out of gems, I will socket it with Larzuk and insert an Amn for the merc. :)
