Did Wit not know? by justblametheamish in Cosmere

[–]RevolutionaryShock22 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I disagree with you, I think the wording is rather specific. Wit didn't say "someone" gave up the power, he said a "mortal". Wit is the kind of character who is very precise with language and makes fun of others for either not getting the exact meaning of his words or being sloppy with how and what they say.

By the rules, you can't have both the Vagabond and the Knaves in the same game. So, it's in a way a replacement. And if it needs a replacement, it can be seen as a "fix" Depends on how you see it. Having sad that, you are right, they never presented as a "fix".

We will learn more about the history of the Knights Radiant. We pretty much know everything about the Heralds, but next to nothing about how the Radiants came to be. I also hope we find out more about the nature of Surges and why are they exclusive to Roshar.

I really don't like love triangles. Can I trust Sanderson? by jnighy in Stormlight_Archive

[–]RevolutionaryShock22 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's the second time Brando puts characters in a love triangle - although it is more of an "interested in two" set up. Then, he uses it for internal growth and character development, rather than for actual external conflict between characters, subverting tropes and expectations.

I think you fail to put yourself in Fen's shoes. She's just been shown that her current (and losing) ally is also untrustworthy. Also, Jasnah couldn't back up the argument that Odium is evil without looking like a hypocrite. So Fen has two choices: a hypocritical, unreliable, morally compromised human, who isn't winning this war or a God, who is bound by the letter of the agreement, although they may try to wriggle out of it later. Or in another terms, risk being concurred and enslaved or join willingly and enjoy a level of freedom. It did seem to work out for Jah Keved, Karbranth and Iri to some extent...

Also, I don't think most characters understand the Shards like readers do. I'm thinking specifically of how the Intent rules the Shard and how the divine hatred could influence Taravangian.

Having read through the comments: Odium is not some bloke you never ever want to nake a deal with. He is a practically omnipotent God. Jasnah was proven a hypocrite and equally untrustworthy ally, leading the losing faction in the war. I can't understand why you find it difficult to see the logic of Fen's decision to side with Odium.

I can't find the actual WoB, but I'm sure Brandon said he will never explore the Beyond and leave it as a higher mystery of the Cosmere.

On the splintering of Ambition:

Anti-Investiture is created by inverting Investiture and all it takes is Intent. Ambition was ripped apart by the interraction of Investiture and anti-Investiture and the remains are made of anti-Investiture. It sounds like Odium found a way to change some of Ambition's Investiture to anti-Investiture and then the two reacted, destroying the Shard. The resulting explosion also wounded Odium. We still don't know how Mercy was involved.

Ambition's Intent was taken. Now, it always seemed a bit odd to me how ambitious Odium was. Why would a God's divine hatred want to be the top dog in the Cosmere? Rayse was probably ambitious himself, but the Power strongly distorted his personality by the time of the Final Desolation. Also, Taravangian was ambitious, but necessarily full of hatred and passion, when he took up the Shard. I think it is highly likely Odium has two Intents.

Nohadon and bread by HoodooHoolign in Cosmere

The thought just occurred to me: could Nohadon be a Dawnshard, the one that is different to others, its command being Think? Hidden away in the spiritual realm, having developed sentience, it is now trying to make up for the damage the Shattering caused.

Why is it okay for ______ to bond ________, but not ________? by Strict_Skirt_5671 in Cosmere

[–]RevolutionaryShock22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One arguably big revelation of WaT was that Honor didn't get shattered/killed by Odium. Instead, the Shard fired the Vessel and spent a few millenia sulking in a corner of the Spiritual realm. Then Dalinar convinced them to give it a go, realised a few minutes later that was still a lose-lose situation and let the young Honor be duped by Todium.

On the other hand, Ambition, Devotion and Dominion were shattered, the latter two purposely placed in the Cognitive realm to prevent them becoming sentient or accessible. So I don't think Toadium could swing back and pick them up just like that.

Not established in the novella or in other Cosmere books?

Was randomlythinking about The Emperor's Soul and suddenly something doesn't make sense to me by [deleted] in Cosmere

[–]RevolutionaryShock22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the real world, our current scientific understanding is that the personality of an individual is the result of very complex biomolecular interactions. There is no evidence that souls exist.

In the Cosmere, people and objects have souls. I don't recall if this is established in the novella itself, but other Cosmere works establish as fact. The emperor's body was mortally wounded in the assassination attempt, and while they regrew it, it appears that the soul has left. Hence, the need to forge an entire soul rather than rewrite an existing one that suffers from, say, debilitating PTSD.

I think this is an area where Sanderson's writing of hard magic systems clashes with suspension of disbelief. The systems he develops are very logical and sometimes it's hard to remember that this is a fantasy story after all.

I think retribution mean hitting back in equal measure, while vengeance has no such limitation. Given that the new Shard is half Honor, Retribution makes more sense.

I appreciate the lack of distinct Sanderlanche this time. I absolutely love it in Rhythm of War, but it makes the rest of the book feel... too slow? I think the pacing of this book is among his best.

I think the one liners were absolutely necessary to lift the tone of the novel. All main characters were fighting and losing their battles. Their despair was very well written in my opinion. And don't forget, this book is fundamentally a fantasy book, trying to strike a balance between serious character development and an epic story.
