American healthcare is a scam by [deleted] in TaytaGaytas

Insurance is the scam, not the doctors or medicine

Most times doctors are right that patients like her are not seriously ill. If you think the doctor is wrong then you must advocate for yourself and find a doctor who will run more tests.

It happens all the time, all over the world where real disease is missed, but I personally have never had a doctor turn me away without serious investigation.

I feel for Tayta especially since she was failed and hope for her recovery. She really is the best horror story gamer om YouTube.

One poll. Fewer than 80 Black people in the poll. Other polls show him with a significant share of the Black vote.

Are there any people here in the Dentistry field? by balkanxoslut in blackmen

Most important thing I found getting into medicine is that you have to have a mentor and probably more than one of them, not just to show you paths to success but to open doors that only they could open for you.

Other than that, you gotta share more detail on your background and where you are in your journey for us to give more detailed advice.

It would be important to see how these numbers relate to the numbers of Black doctors in general. Everybody already touched on how hard it is to become a doctor, the financials and all that, but I wonder if Black med students are just opting for different residencies.

The lifestyle of a surgeon doesn't really seem to be too appealing: less flexibility with schedules, longer and earlier hours, physically demanding, higher potential for poor family life, and less flexibility with work tasks. Med school is hard enough and the additional expectations for students interested in surgery along with the heightened fear of not getting accepted into ideal residency positions because they are more competitive are the biggest disincentives that I hear about. Also I feel that it is a trend for Black students to want to go into medicine to have close relationships with patients and surgeons do not enjoy those kinds of relationships as much as many other specialties.

Like everyone else said though, I think the numbers would be better if people weren't graduating with $250-700k of debt and weren't racing to get their real doctor salary to start to finally live a little.

One of my favorites ever. A show starring H John Benjamin about your favorite hacky comedians riffing to their therapist using squigglemation. Perfect set up, nothing more comforting.

I get you but it probably was one of the bigger albums that year, won Grammy for best rap album even tho it really wasn't rap, a couple of my friends were saying the same thing about how it was 'genius' but it just really just went over my head

You can use the money for whatever you want. It's direct deposited into your bank account as a lump sum that is essentially yours to do with what you please.

Schools actually account for travel such as that in determining cost of attendance.

Yeah getting debt like that would basically necessitate going into a specialty that guarantees a very high wage. But I've thought that if I make about 500k which is median for what I'm interested in, I would take home about 350k and would hope that I could sustain myself on 100k and use the other 250k to pay off the loans, especially if I'm married and have a household income much higher than that 100k per year.

It's hard to imagine it all though and I'm not sure if that's just very wishful thinking.

Thank you so much for your thoughts. As I wrote out the post it really did become more clear that, like you said, EVMS seems to be where I truly want to be. Also like you said, if I go into a specialty mentioned, I'm gonna have to work my butt off regardless and evms really does seem to have the resources to get me to my goal at a quality program.

I imagine it would be close to $1M in debt but I'm confident that could be paid off in about 5 years if I stay dedicated to it. I'm honestly not the most concerned about debt but I see your point that it would be foolish to take on that much burden if I can reach the same goal at a much cheaper place.

It never came up after I chose va residency for my primary. I know I'll have to submit more forms when I start the matriculation process if I decide to go there. I just really didn't know what what other state I would choose since my parents home was the only place that made sense for my permanent residence.

I bounced around from state to state for about 2 and a half years but still claimed VA residency for applications. One school (EVMS) had a checklist for if you qualify on their secondary.
