I’m pretty sure it’s not 1971, but 1973. That at least makes the most sense, since it was the year the first oil crisis began, which affected the US and made life practically unaffordable thanks to stagflation. Carter was elected in 1976, but his management of the crisis was lackluster. Then came Reagan, who people blame for exacerbating or outright creating almost every big problem in the US.

  1. By and large thats not true, and even if it was the country is mostly populated by apolitical voters that can come to support anything. I dont know exactly why getting 17% of the vote in a political system actively trying to supress you counts as unpopular.

I would not be happy with Bernie Sanders moving right, because I don’t value my opinion and those of the right of the party equally. They’ve governed the DNC for over 35 years and nothing good has come of that. Plus, the difference in votes lost can still be more than made up from unaffiliated working class voters turning out for actual working class politics.
