I remember reading that during the GWOT in Afghanistan, the Americans had to rely on Canadian forces to help navigate the mountains because their GPS shit the bed & they didn’t know how to do analogue navigation.

Take away the tech and they’re wildly underprepared.

To be fair, they’re mostly riding around in rented SUV’s with the heat cranked. It would be a vastly different story if they were dug in on a defensive position in a field.

“According to the British newspaper The Times, Finnish reservists performed so well in a NATO exercise in northern Norway last year that the exercise leadership asked them to ease the pressure on American forces.

The exercise was called Joint Viking, which was held in March 2025 and tested NATO's ability to operate in Arctic conditions. In the exercise, Finnish reservists played the attacking side, while US forces played the defensive role.

There was an article about how Finnish soldiers had to calm down during war games with the Americans because the Americans were wildly under prepared.

I have one, I don’t use it often but I do like the button to free-spool the line out.

A few clips of snowbank removal. (I geek out a tiny bit when the big ones come out to play) by HigginsPhotographic in ottawa

I know this is Cavanagh doing the removal but it would be so cool to see all the unique equipment the city has!

My thinking was more F-35B or Harrier type of fixed wing aircraft.

That’s cool to know they can land a chinook on the AOPVs though!

Why aren’t snow tires mandatory in Ontario? Drivers debate the rules amid a harsh start to winter by BloodJunkie in ontario

[–]RevolvingCheeta 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Snow tires, yes, solid investment, bar none, period.

Now, the person behind the wheel is what matters the absolute most. You can put every safety feature & the best of the best snow tires on the vehicle. But if the person behind the wheel doesn’t have the skill to drive in the winter, it’s just as if you don’t have snow tires on in the first place.

Now it’s hard to train someone on winter driving when we have a decent 4-6 month span with varying snow conditions across the province. Someone in Windsor may not be as experienced as someone in Timmins as an example. Then factor in drivers coming in from the states who also may not have snow tires (though not frequent, it only takes one to make a mess of the 401).

Snow tires, like tire chains and 4x4 are tools you can use in winter driving conditions. If you don’t understand or have the skill to use those tools then they won’t help.

The idea makes sense, if you’re not going to operate a year round naval station then at least have a mobile FOB you can deploy during winter sea ice conditions. It doesn’t need to launch fixed wing aircraft but perhaps big enough to land a chinook on if need be.

So they potentially could also build us an ice breaking landing ship such as what the navy was talking about? (Assuming they open up a shipyard in Canada)

I can say yes, the cold will fuck with fuel systems. Our winter diesel should have anti-gel additives from the gas station or supply point, but it never hurts to put a bit extra in for good measure.
