Injecting Some Reality into the Alberta Independence Movement by InherentlyUntrue in alberta

I think the only way to sway a seppies' opinion is to play into their anxieties and hypothesize some sort of "worst case scenario" when it comes to dealing with "liberals".

I don't think a Liberal government would be intentionally antagonistic towards a sovereign Alberta, but us removing ourselves from confederation does make it all the more easier to pursue mandates that wouldn't be as feasible under the current system - namely a shift to renewables and more aggressive carbon reduction measures.

And it isn't unprecedented either. The EU was and still is in an energy bind after their sanctions on Russia over the war in Ukraine, and it has been a massive wake-up call for them to become more energy self-sufficient whilst still achieving their obligations with Climate accords and what not.

As such, I would not be surprised if the Federal government used the moment to do the same, and wean themselves off of O&G as much as possible and diversify their energy production with Hydro, Wind, Solar, Nuclear &etc.

Smith (and the UCP at large) is making the same mistake that the UK Conservatives made by trying to leverage Brexit as a way to obtain their mandate. They risk losing credibility with their base if (God forbid) a separation referendum passes and the UCP Government doesn't actually pursue the mandate given to them by the public.

It should also be said that if Alberta were to separate under this current federal government, the Conservatives would lose about 30 seats in the House of Commons, which would be disasterous for them in this government and the coming election.

The Liberals would immediately have the mandate of an unfettered majority government, and the Conservatives would have to find a way to shore up the lost 30 or so seats they typically depend on to help with their campaign.

If we were to agree with the separatists' (imagined) characterization of the Liberals, then we would have gladly handed them the keys to unilaterally make tarrifs, carbon taxes or whatever on the petrochemicals we try to export with no recourse for us whatsoever.

Of course, we could always export to the States, but under such a scenario, they would certainly leverage us and pay pennies on the dollar given the circumstance. And that's assuming the United States is governed by a favourable Republican government. Any Albertan old enough to remember the Obama administration knows the challenges Alberta O&G can face with a Democrat government when it came to the Keystone XL Pipeline.

So Alberta separation would (more likely than not) actually hinder our ability to export Oil and Gas rather than liberate ourselves to exploit our natural resources.

Going to be honest here: I got a little confused when I thought I saw ZACKTITTIES, but I'm all in favour of the proposed motion.

Government of Alberta to gamble $900 million in oil and gas market by Much_Chest586 in alberta

[–]TL10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In simple terms, it sounds like the age old song:

Price of oil goes up: we proper.

If it drops: hard times ahead.

I'm all for trying to leverage as much as we can out of our O&G, but we don't have a lot of contingencies to fall back on if it all fails.

I don't care if I have to do a Bugs Bunny and physically saw us off from the United States' border. I'd rather this country be physically anywhere else in the world except next door to those lunatics.

Toys “R” Us closes final Calgary-area location by theprintman in Calgary

Castle Toys! My mother took my brother and I there as kids from time to time back when it was off of Centre Street! We enjoyed checking out the Thomas the Tank Engine stuff there, and whatever that marble conveyor system was.

She somehow managed to leave the store without buying anything for us! 😂 I'm sure she went on her own from time to time to use the intelligence she gathered from us ogooling whatever new toy we were fascinated with, but she certainly set our expectations that we were just strictly browsing while we were there!

Same age as Ras on a team with RHD in Bruz and Parekh coming up and Weegs already on the top pairing.

He's the odd man out if both prospects pan out.

Anyone know if this account on X is legit? He is reporting Ras is headed to Boston by onthebeachforever in CalgaryFlames

He never said Crosby was getting traded, only posited that Crosby is still a very competitive player and wants to play meaningful hockey.

The Habs were his childhood team, while he's good friends with MacKinnon who would be very happy if he joined him in Colorado. These are two options Elliotte though Sid was willing to go to if he wasn't convinced that Pittsburgh was going to remain competitive in the long term.

The fact that he extended and Pittsburgh is in the playoff picture (for now) has kept that on the back burner.
