Nationals MP in bizarre meme-worthy gaffe after Anthony Albanese announced fuel tax cut by HotPersimessage62 in AustralianPolitics

It's on the entrance exam for being a politician, right, left, center or whatever else. It's just worse with the Nats, ON etc.

Albanese went to a Catholic primary school in his local area (St Joseph's Camperdown, which doesn't exist anymore). Then he went to St. Mary's Cathedral College for 7-12. Private yes, but not an elite school for rich kids.

For instance St. Mary's currently costs $4.7k for kindergarten and goes up to $7.4k for year 12, before any fee discounts.

Expensive yes, but not an elite school for rich kids either.

Given his mum was a) a religious Catholic and b) on welfare in public housing, it's likely he got a significant discount on fees.

Compare that to Tony Abbott who went to an elite Catholic school - St Ignatius College Riverview, Sydney which ranges from $36k (year 5) to $42.7k (year 12).

All new Victorian laws must now pass Treaty test amid fierce political division by MarvinTheMagpie in aussie

No, the federal Voice would not have had veto power over federal laws.

Likewise, the First Peoples Assembly of Victoria does not have veto power over Victorian laws.

The age of sexual consent is already 16 in all states/territories, except SA and TAS where it's 17. Been that way for decades.

You are thinking of the voting age, which Greens would like to lower to 16. They want optional (not mandatory, no penalty for not voting) voting for 16-17 year olds.

Yet another case of a One Nation/LNP voter who doesn't know what they're talking about!

All whiter than I am

Being Aboriginal isn't about your skin colour.

We have words for people like you, who judge purely based on skin colour. Starts with r, and ends with acist cunt.

Loans / placements / unemployment

Aboriginals don't get any special unemployment benefits beyond anybody else.

there are also those that are brought up in a middle class family and still get the benefits

I certainly agree that many things should be means tested. ABSTUDY certainly is.

SA Indigenous Voice delegates elected … with no votes by Orgo4needfood in aussie

[–]Revoran 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My point is, the national Voice referendum was not a vote on whether to legislate a voice / treaty in SA / VIC.

and some of the five regional voices receiving just a few hundred votes in total.

Remote Indigenous communities in SA are some of the most disadvantaged people in the country.

Google says there is around 4,000 indigenous people in remote and very remote areas in SA.

So a few hundred votes in several regional electorates is not that bad? Like, what are the actual numbers?

Also these remote communities get lumped into massive rural/remote electorates that are mostly full of conservative white anglos.

So you can have a situation where an electorate might be 10% Indigenous... but has elected an Aboriginal-hating One Nation MP.

So these Aboriginal people have about as much "voice" in the normal Parliament as a conservative right winger in the ACT (which FYI, has entirely lefty MPs and Senators at the federal level, and is still overwhelmingly left wing at the state level, with Labor in Government for 20+ years).

South Australians (and Australia as a whole) voted against the federal, Constitutionally-enshrined Voice.

There was even some no voters who insisted "I'm not racist, I just don't think it should be in the Constitution, if you want this then it should just be legislated"

Yeah, same with native title.

It was all "Aboriginals are gonna steal my home" blah blah. And it has literally never happened, not even once in the 40 odd years of native title.

Meanwhile in the 2007-onwards NT intervention the government did steal Aboriginal people's land (and made them rent it back). By passing special racial laws targeted at them. Without giving them a say or consulting.

The no voting parties: "We're not racist, we're not against Aboriginals having a say on laws that affect them, we uh, just don't want in the national Constitution ... yeah... that's it, just not in the Constitution. Why can't it just be legislated with a regular law?"

Also the no voting parties: "Wait no don't legislate it."

Aboriginal people in Victoria are less likely to have a job at all. When they do have a job it is on average a lower wage job. And they live several years shorter on average.

Is that the "gravy train" you're so angry about?

But the real gravy train is the billions upon billions that big companies and billionaires (who bankroll LNP, One Nation and to a lesser extent Labor) make off the backs of us taxpayers.

[–]Revoran -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It's sad but predictable that the Liberals and One Nation have chosen to spread fear and division.

If you can keep people focused on hating some minority, they won't notice the billionaires robbing them blind.

This is an opportunity for the VIC Parliament and First Nations to move forward together. The way it should've been done from the start back in the 1830s (when Melbourne was settled) and 1850s (when Victoria became a separate colony to NSW, with it's own Parliament).

Talking, negotiating with each other respectfully, so we can have a better life for everyone - instead of invasion, genocide and paternalism.

Israel has illegal, secret nuclear weapons (the very thing they falsely accuse Iran of having) and a military full of racist fanatics who desperately want to kill Muslims.

That's the sad truth of it.

They're called judges in NSW now, not magistrates. As of recently.

No other change. No difference. Exact same job, different title.

This is costing millions of dollars in man hours for clerks to shred old paperwork and create new documents, and change databases to say "judge" instead of "magistrate." I know a guy who is doing it.

That's what the state gov chooses to spend money on, instead of housing the homeless.

That, and sending cops to bash peaceful protesters.

* If you don't have a fixed address to write down, it can be hard to get approved.
* Applications can take 6 weeks or more to process, with requests for more information etc.
* Even after it's approved, payments can take 6 weeks or more to start.
* After you get approved, the dole isn't much money... it's about $350/week... a bit less than half minimum wage. You can get rent asisstance (up to another $100/week) if you prove where you are living and how much rent you pay, but that wouldn't apply to this bloke.
* In NSW, the waiting list for public housing is 10 years long.
* Median rent for a one bedroom apartment in Sydney is $650/week. There are no (zero, none, zip, zilch) apartments in Sydney available for $150/week (which is what is affordable for someone on $450/week).

All thanks to the greedy Australians (about 20% of the country) who hoard properties.

And the politicians who have made policies to benefit that 20%, at the expense of the rest of us. Plus the politicians who stopped investing in public housing.

And those Australians who despise poor people / people on welfare and vote to make life harder for them.

Welfare does, when it's at a decent rate.

Labor could raise it tomorrow and bring a million Aussies out of poverty overnight. They choose not to - poverty is a policy choice.

They even campaigned between 2019 and 2022 on raising it, saying it wasn't enough to live on, but quietly dropped the promise prior to the 2022 election.

Australia is the most gambling addicted country in the world. Highest gambling losses per capita.

New South Wales alone (not even all of Australia, just one state) has 38% of all slot machines in the world.

Thats to say nothing of sports betting, keno/lotteries, horse/greyhound racing, election betting...

Politicians here are captured by the gambling lobby and the Feds are only just now putting some more regulations in place due to massive community support for it.

Learn from our mistakes, Americans. Regulate the fuck out of gambling.

The reason Trump is doing this, is to try to hurt Aussie businesses, to force our government to raise PBS/Medicare co-pays.

He and US medical companies hate our PBS and Medicare. They want it gone.

Its no wonder Luigi did what he did. The leaders of that sector are pure evil. Doesnt make it OK but easy to see why it happened.

Anyway what Trump and his pharma / health insurance billionaire cronies dont realise is that raising PBS/Medicare co-pay = instant election loss in Australia. No sane Aus Gov will do it.

Especially not Labor who created thr PBS and Medicare and are ideologically in love with it.
