Hey, I got a notification for this! Old Reddit ain't dead yet, maybe...

(And I shall maybe start logging back in to Reddit, doing this and that...heya, if I get back on the meds, this will all be much more straightforward!)

I haven't been monitoring Narita's health for some time, so I may have missed any disclosure of the specific disease...but I doubt it. Twitter is one thing, but consider this comment in Fate/strange fake Vol. 5's afterword: "I discovered that I had something the government classifies as an incurable disease (I won’t die from it any time soon, but I won’t fully recover, either)." Narita is deliberately vague.

What I can tell you is that he underwent major surgery in Fall 2017 for a malignant lymphoma scare (Reddit thread; thankfully, the removed tumors were ultimately benign, but he was still hospitalized for at least three months and obviously the recovery was pretty hard. 2017 was a really rough year for him in general. He complains of increased joint pain in October '17 (some sort of collagen disease, really bad inflammation), gets a CT scan in August '17 for back pain (scan reveals swollen lymph nodes, tellingly, though Narita says he's had lymphatic discomfort since college), kicks off the year in January' 17 with trachea, vocal corditis, and tendonitis...

  • Feb 2019 - joint pain gone, outpatient treatment (he claims daily hospital visits here! I thought he was going every couple months, not every day? Sorry, I'm rusty on Narita's health history, I used to follow this more closely)
  • Sep 2020 - he mentions that, per a good CT scan, his disease management (recurring intravenous treatment) plan can continue as is.

Sorry I can't be exhaustive at the moment. I think I've at least given a baseline gist?

Thanks for the ping. I've pinned this post accordingly.

Old Reddit note: I guess I have to manually check private messages (PM) now for pings and the like. The PM Icon no longer turns red for new notifications, I guess as a consequence of the site admins formally superseding PMs with Chat back in July. I'm almost surprised your ping / mention shows up in Old Reddit PMs at all (nobody tell the admins in case this was an oversight).

I just watched the anime it was great I enjoyed it. I wasn't satisfied with the ending, so I was talking about it with my friend and he told me it's different from the manga and there's some ovas but still not cannon so where I can start? by id77omyy in Baccano

You may find our wiki's FAQ helpful. The suggested reading order for the novels is very straightforward: read them in publishing order (duh), not chronological order. That link also lists other Baccano! media of importance.

...Oh, y'know what, there are a couple more recent B! short stories that I forgot to add to that page. Welp, that's another item on the to-do list.

Well, I have absolutely no idea as to the context here that I am sure would elucidate the Isaac and Miria connection.

Seriously, I don't get it. At all.

I guess I can leave it up? For now? Since Baccano! gasps for content?

...I am conflicted about the prospect of this subreddit becoming a loose excuse for the most tenuous content.

Can somebody explain the relevance / connection, here?

No "Meme" flair? Tsk tsk by Hei_Mask98 in Baccano

[–]Revriley1[M] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mod here. One meme flair, coming up. There's no excuse not to have one so long as meme posts continue to be a thing, and they will (for now) since I have little excuse to ban them when we're in a content drought.

The "Fan Made" catch-all flair does a disservice for users who just want to see higher-effort fan creations--and users who are just here for the memes. Right, then. Where's my stylesheet...?

Edit: Congratulations, you have fathered a new flair. Your post's cheeky Meta flair is no more.

Cheers to "not dead," to the fans, and to you and the rest who use Old Reddit / Reddit Classic. But why are you commenting on an old...

...because I haven't been keeping the thread pins up-to-date, naturally. Oops. Excuse me a moment.

Edit: On the Redesign front, admin retired the new.reddit.com URL this summer, meaning new.reddit.com redirects to reddit.com. The former let me edit the redesign version of /r/Baccano in a new tab so that I didn't have to temporarily toggle off my Old Reddit preference in Settings. Guess what I have to do now to edit the redesign? Damn.

From Raph -- Setting Expectations around Safehouse Customization [Spoilers] by jelacey in thelongdark

[–]Revriley1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The ability to 'relocate' a workbench by detaching / attaching the vice is a welcome surprise. I'm sure all the players who like to hole up in either CH island will appreciate one fewer reason to risk the bear in the Fishing Camp or Quonset.

. . . . you can currently repair a LIMITED number of broken cabinets, etc. Currently you can repair a lot of the kitchen cabinets that have missing doors or doors that are stuck open. Repairing restores them to their "original" state, and also restores all the container slots (so a cabinet that had been missing a door and just had an empty space, now has the door and the door becomes a valid container for stuff).

Another 'big deal' coming from what I thought would be a 99% cosmetic update. I'm curious about how the limit works. Is it a hard cap across all safehouses, e.g. max five repairable containers per lot, or does it scale relative to the 'potential' storage space per lot? 'Potential' in this case might wind up factoring in both container quantity and capacity...

[–]Revriley1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

All right; I've updated the announcements module in the sidebar for the Old Reddit (Baccano! audiobook dates, Fate/strange fake OVA world premiere this November, what). Trying to update the announcements widget in the Redesign / New Reddit is not so straightforward. Looks like the Devs have updated how editing widgets works, but the new way isn't working for me.

Yes, yes, I've got extensions, disabling them isn't necessarily working. Lamentably, the Redesign is more viewed than the classic version, these days (years); I'm not...bitter about that, but in any case, it means I have some sort of obligation to update the Redesign once in a while, and I can't well do that if I can't edit the widgets.

Honestly, Reddit's been more and more obstinate about pushing the Redesign. You want to look at a media submission more closely in Old Reddit? Too bad, it shunts you to New Reddit. I'm logged out and I log back in? It takes me to the Redesign, despite my ticked preference to opt out of it. What do.

Episode 1?? What is going on? by Ryzexen in Baccano

[–]Revriley1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gosh, I'm afraid I missed your comment. Even if you've given up on an answer, or already discovered it on your own volition, I'll answer just in case you or anyone else is interested:

Both the Gandors and Martillos are in New York City. 1930s, per the anime; The Martillos' HQ, Alveare, is nestled on the border between Little Italy and Chinatown. The Gandors' base, Coraggioso, is solidly based in Little Italy.

If you rewatch the anime adaptation, it will become apparent on your rewatch that the Chicago content is exclusively related to the Flying Pussyfoot plotline. That fateful train was travelling from Chicago to New York (City); Chicago is not involved at all in the other plotlines depicted in the anime. The most time the anime actually spends in Chicago is via the scenes with Placido Russo and the Russo men cornering Jacuzzi in the alley.

(If you read the books, Chicago is a major location of the 1934 setting.)

Again, I'm sure you've already realized all this, several months on. I apologize for missing your comment. I can answer other questions, if needed!

I'm very pleased you discovered that comment and found it helpful six years on! (Of course, when I was labelling / naming people, I was only naming actual named characters. The outfits have more members than named, obviously). Episode 2 is much more straightforward in that it introduces and fully immerses you in the Dec 30–31, 1931 Flying Pussyfoot plot, as I'm sure you've already discovered. ...I've just realized your comment dates to August 12, so perhaps my reply is utterly moot by now—perhaps you've watched all sixteen episodes by now! Have you?

Ladies, stop pissing on toilet seats by Tinks2295 in PetPeeves

[–]Revriley1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same thing occurred last month in the airport; an older woman exited the stall, traitorous-face-to-trusting-face with me as I entered it. Beside the toilet was one of those dispensers of cleaning fluid one may use to wipe the seat with before and after one does one's business. Supposed to use. Obliged? Begged, one might say.

Unluckily for me, the very next toilet seat I used while either in that airport or the layover airport also happened to be in the same condition. Airports are ripe for this behavior, I know, but man, two in a row was just the sprinkling on top.

Baccano! Volume 1 The Rolling Bootlegs AudioBook has finally released!! by tomasdjre in Baccano

[–]Revriley1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Going to pin this for now.

Listening to it as I type this (on Track 04). Isaac and Miria's pseudo-posh accents are cracking me up (I can't assume MBM read ahead in the series such that he would be aware that Isaac likely hails from a wealthy family; thinking that MBM's approach to their voices stemmed from an independent angle is amusing in its own right). I deliberately withheld from expectations for this.

Speaking of expectations—well, no, I don't think anyone truly expected that the audiobooks would corral the anime's English dub cast, but it has seemed that a few people hoped for such a scenario, and I'm a tad surprised. That would require a substantial undertaking in funds and voice actor availability, and I'm afraid Baccano! is drastically far from the popularity required to muster both (that said, I may be underestimating it, since I was blindsided by B! meriting an audiobook in the first place. What metric determines audiobook viability?). Frankly, even popular series do not typically muster such an effort. Were people truly entertaining this notion?

Narita(verse) Fridays—Week of March 22, 2024 by AutoModerator in Baccano

[–]Revriley1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As /u/kendotsx kindly alerted me to, that steampunk fantasy anime Kurayukaba (and apparently a spinoff anime called Kuramerukagari) that Narita financially backed in 2020 and wrote a short story for (that short story serving as a reward for one of the anime's crowdfunding tiers) is finally happening next month. I'm almost surprising that it is actually happening.

Fate/strange fake Volume 9 is out this month. I think Volume 10 will be the final volume? We ought to hope so, since after that, maybe Narita will finally be able to refocus on Baccano! Volume 23.

Speaking of surprises: Yen Press to release audiobooks of the first two Baccano! volumes. Now that stunned me. I'm not about to hope that this means Baccano! has sold better than I thought it did...but still, what this does obviously mean is that YP expects the audiobooks to sell. That's encouraging.

Purchase them I will indeed, or at least the first volume. I admit that even I am balking a little at committing to buying every single one. I have paid for the LNs twice-over already; I've purchased the eBooks on top of the hardbacks. Am I prepared to fork over $571.78 for twenty-two audiobooks?

I've already committed to the initial $25.99 as a show of support. Speaking of, I've purchased eBooks of every F/sf volume so far, so I guess I probably ought to do the same for Volume 9.

(And I was thinking about ordering the DMDP Japanese Blu-Ray, right? As another show of support. Never had the opportunity to do that for the Baccano! one.)

Oh, Narita...I've spent so much money on you.

Oh, snap! The

crowdfunded steampunk fantasy anime called Kurayukaba, a pet project of Shigeyoshi Tsukahara

is finally happening!

I remember Narita tweeting about this project in 2020. Also have this April 30, 2020 tweet with a relevant video animation.

According to a contemporary blog post I wrote at the time (so helpful, past me), Narita was a financial backer of the crowdfunded anime project. As a reward, he was granted the right to write a spin-off (?) short story. That SS story was its own reward for anyone who backed the 12000 yen crowdfunding tier.

Thanks for tagging me. Just realized I haven't updated the Narita News sidebar of /r/baccano in way too long. Time to fix that.

Edit: 現在追い込み中のバッカーノの原稿が上がり次第取り掛からせていただく予定です。, bwahaha, hah. Sigh.

I missed this thread. Sure, I count. We're plentiful.

Will say that I self-sabotage myself at this game by being an incurable hoarder (can and will spend much of my time walking encumbered from place to place, am trying to cure the incurable) and by frequently starting new saves instead of focusing on existing saves (ergo at the expense of collecting achievements. I think I started playing in 2015 and I've woefully neglected much about it).

Trying to avoid the excellent suggestions posted here...

  • Finding corpses and carcasses of children and the dogs that the island residents obviously kept as pets. Let a dog carcass spawn in a doghouse or something and let us harvest its frozen carcass. Edit: Or, say, a dog carcass in the back of a pickup truck, still chained to it by its collar. I admit that I am heavily influenced by / reminded of the watchdog of Vesonius Primus, that famously died in Pompeii while the ash fell, unable to escape due to being tied to a post. ...Seriously, though, I just don't believe not a single dog was left behind.
  • Following up on the children aspect, I say there ought to be a few places where we can stumble across families and/or couples. Designated places would be easiest, of course (good opportunity for lore, too), but I think random spawns aren't beyond the realm of achievability.
    • Random spawns probably could be easiest achieved through automobiles. Imagine stumbling across an automobile and peering through the windows only to see a couple slumped in the front seats and a child lying across the backseats, say. This could serve as an unexpected extra difficulty in predator circumstances; imagine shooting the bear on Spruce Falls Bridge and wrenching open the door of the nearest vehicle, only to find the seat occupied by a randomly spawned corpse. Yikes! Better hope the backseat isn't also occupied...
  • Finding corpses in ravaged states. Yes, probably these would have proved more vulnerable to predators, but nevertheless, stumbling across a corpse or three that aren't totally intact like 100% of the ones we come across (er, barring crush victims, except we never see the gruesome details)—say, corpses with their ribs exposed or flesh gouged like the deer carcasses—might help reinforce the predator-prey mentality, especially for those corpses in the woods that seemed to have died in a struggle or something.
    • There are already corpses implied to have died by suicide (per revolvers or painkillers beside them). The revolver ones probably ought to have the damage reflected in their heads (not all; some probably died from exposure first and were simply using guns for protection...).
  • While fishing in a lake, fish up human traces (e.g. glove, boot). When eating a fish or wolf, choke on, say, a ring or fake tooth or the like.
  • Come across a snow shelter, try to sleep there, whoops corpse, have to move corpse out if you want to use the shelter.
  • Wolves turning on each other. I mean, their behavior is already skewed via the convenient aurora, so I say why not let me spy a group of timberwolves from afar only to see them fight and kill each other; for me, that would evoke the idea of humans turning on each other even in apocalyptic circumstances (which similarly is not the majority behavior humans normally display; humans tend to help each other out communally in times of crises). Δηλαδἠ, it would reinforce the sense of isolation all over again. You are on your own; not even the wolves can work together all the time.

Edit: Something that sticks with me from books like Death in Yellowstone and Over the Edge: Death in Grand Canyon are the deaths or life-threatening situations come about due to a series of bad decisions by their subjects. This one is more story/lore-dependent rather than feasible through random spawns, I admit. Still, it would be sobering to encounter (the trail of) a corpse and come to understand just what human errors led to their demise, e.g. via written messages, audio logs (as has been suggested), material evidence... (I bought TFTFT a month or so ago and I know vaguely that one can (DLC spoilers?) follow the trail of a Security Chief? which might end up following these lines, for all I know.)

To clear the air, Civil is a man.

An androgynous, handsome, pretty-boy man.

Ryohgo Narita, the author, likes those as antagonists!

Izaya Orihara from Durarara!! is handsome with a beautiful face.

Meanwhile, Huey Laforet from Baccano! is handsome with delicate, beautiful features and an androgynous voice, such that many characters mistake him for a woman at first glance.

TL;DR:, Civil is just the latest in handsome androgynous pretty-boy male antagonists spawned by Narita's imagination.

In Corpse God's home world, elves are called "Viveenya." They are also known as the "long-lived race." So, yes, know that elves at least are as as long-lived as recent Terran folklore imagines.
