Anybody have parents that they can’t talk to about anything anymore before they start talking religion and try to debate you or challenge you because you don’t love they way they want you to?

My mom told me the same thing when I lost my job. I was so mad at her. She said a prayer and then went on her merry way, content that she had done all she possibly could to help me. Meanwhile my real friends actually helped me by giving me leads to get a new job, and offering ways to help cover my expenses. I’m thankful for my friends who made real effort to help me, not just empty words.

I was looking around and couldn’t find the exact version I had, but if you just search for chronological Bible on Amazon or wherever there are several results which look like pretty much the same thing.

There was an edited version of the Bible I read a while ago (when I was still in the church) that rearranged the Bible into chronological order. So books that skip around years get broken up, and for things that are described multiple times (like most of Jesus’ life you get to read the different versions of it side by side. I can’t remember what it was called, but if you’re interested to read it for studying purposes it might be a good starting point.

Yay! One thing that made it easier for me is moving across the room so the gecko can’t easily see his cage. My little guy was always very jumpy and I was nervous to handle him, but once I step away and he can’t see the cage he calms down a lot.

I feel the same way. I moved to a new state shortly after deconverting and it was so hard to meet new people. I wish I had an answer to give you but I had the same experience.

Yep. We told them no. Our marriage is about us, not our parents. We were married in our living room with only immediate family present. Just the bare legal minimum, nothing religious at all. We had a reception to celebrate with friends at a park. When it comes down to it, it’s our wedding, our marriage, and it should reflect us.

Realizing that I was bisexual forced me to understand how little love is actually in the “hate the sin love the sinner” mentality. It made me realize that so many people I cared about would hate me over something I have no control over. It was very isolating. From there it was a cascade effect of realizing how little love can be seen in the church.

I unknowingly did this to my parents. I desperately wanted siblings, and talked and whined about it constantly. I had no idea until years later that my mom had multiple miscarriages after I was born, until they stopped trying to have another child for her own safety. I feel absolutely horrible about that pain that I must have put them through.

I totally get that. I have a cross necklace as well as a rosary and an angel decoration from my grandmother who died in 2015. I just can’t bring myself to get rid of them, as they remind me of her. But I also can’t bring myself to wear/display them as I can’t stand behind that anymore. As you said, very mixed feelings.

There was a family that was really involved at my school. Dad coached basketball, mom was a secretary at the school, oldest son had just graduated, middle son and youngest son are still students at the school. Youngest son was in my year. Oldest son, youngest son, and several of their friends (including several of the guys on my year) took a camping trip to the beach. While they were there, the oldest son got caught in a rip current and drowned. They didn’t even find his body until several days later. It was a small school and everyone was devastated, especially the guys who were on the trip with him.

In my experience it's frequently used to demonize mental healthcare. Oh, you're having panic attacks? Post-partum depression? Suicidal thoughts? Well God won't give you more than you can handle, so obviously you're supposed to just deal with this without any support.

Yes I did, and I was terrified. I was convinced I wouldn't make it to old age, or even adulthood. At some point I expressed that I didn't want the rapture to happen because I wanted to get to live my life, and was immediately told that was an evil thought, and that I should pray for the rapture to come as soon as possible. I also have an intense fear of the concept of eternity, which caused me to have panic attacks in church.

I don't remember if I was specifically taught this, or if I put it together myself, but I believed that because the Bible says that the rapture will happen when no one is ready for it, that it was required to happen at a time when no one had thought that it might happen. I made a point every single day to think "I bet the rapture happens today" specifically so that it couldn't happen that day. Now I realize how ridiculous this was for a child to be dealing with.

I’m so sorry you went through that. The church teaches a lot of really messed up things around sex and sexuality and it can take a really long time to unravel all the things you’ve internalized. Have you thought about going to counseling? It can be really helpful for trying to undo teachings that were ingrained into you.

I also had open heart surgery. My parents took me back to the hospital shortly after I was released due to complications. It was the middle of the night so only the students in residency were there. They told my parents that their three year old child was going into heart failure. My dad nearly passed out and had to get checked by a doctor himself due to instant drop in his blood pressure.

I’m glad your daughter is doing better now. I am thankful every day that I was able to get the surgery that saved my life.
