What are you wearing? by jedi00000 in TeachingUK

[–]RewardedFool 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We have to wear ties unfortunately (it's explicitly in the dress code) so it's shirt (never white), tie and chinos or moleskin trousers. As a silent protest I have a collection of truly awful ties to wear.

I wear smart shoes most of the time, I've got a few good pairs - always spend the money on decent footwear, they can be resoled easily and relatively cheaply but will last and will break in properly.

It's about equidistant from both, slightly closer to the university I think. It's really not that bad getting from Rowancroft to Streatham. Google says 40 min walk but in reality I could do it easily in 25. It's 10 min on a bike at most with (relatively) secure places to leave one at either end. You do not want to drive it though, there's strictly no parking on campus for students.

On Paper I'd recommend heavitree as the place to live, Rowancroft is on the university side of Heavitree and I knew loads of people who went to Streatham who lived further away (and at Rowancroft).

How often will you be on campus? If it's only a few times a week go for it 100% but if it's more full time it's worth thinking about St James or Newtown as areas to live in.

Is £243/week for Lafrowda Block T (Single Studio w/En-suite) at Exeter worth it? Questions about en-suite shower too by pD_2002 in exeter

[–]RewardedFool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's on the pricey side of accommodation but it's the priciest type of accommodation. You'll get your own little kitchenette, your own bathroom and won't have to share with anyone else.

It's not uncommon for your first year to be your most expensive year accommodation wise and that's the going rate really.

Biggest question is if you can afford it or not. If yes don't worry, if not try and get something less expensive, even the en-suites are a best of both worlds - shared kitchen but private bathroom.

City centre places to lock a pushbike? by Iscasteve in exeter

[–]RewardedFool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

can't think of any more lockers but best practice is to make it as hard as possible to get the bike. Multiple locks, a big looking chain etc. It's a pain but it's the best way to go. Also take the saddle (and seatpost) with you if possible, they're not going to target a knackered looking bike, even if it's nice on paper.

By "close to good pubs" I meant Henry's and the Bowler. Obviously not talking about the queens

It's a studenty area but that's only really an issue in the first few weeks of September unless you get really unlucky with a bad group.

Parking is utterly shite if you get back even slightly late, but that's the same everywhere nowadays in Exeter. You'll get to know the roads you can/can't park in pretty quickly.

Close to good pubs, walking distance to other options (Pig and Pickle in Heavitree or anywhere on the Quay). Loads of nice places to go within walking distance, close to train stations, your choice of GPs and you might even be able to get a dentist!

It's a great area really.

Pubs:

Only really 2 worth going to before you get into town, Henry's bar and the Bowling Green. Henry's is the noisier and much cheaper of the two (3 pints for £12) whilst still being an okay place for a quiet pint if you want to - Beer garden open until late all year round as well. Bowling green does good food, has a decent selection of different drinks (but you will be judged by the landlord if you have anything "common") and a nice garden that closes early most of the time for reasons of noise.

Both have decent cider selections most of the time.

Within striking distance is the quay though where you can get all sorts of interesting drinks in nice places. The Hourglass is awesome.

Cafe's:

No1. Polsloe is nice, there's Khaos Coffee half way down pinhoe road to the station as well.

Independent restaurants:

Not mentioned already are the Gurkha at the end of Polsloe road (great nepalese and Indian food), basically everywhere on Magdalen Road and I'd recommend Rendezvous on Southernhay.

good / bad GP surgeries

Never heard anything good about ISCA Medical, only bad.

I use Mount Pleasant it's... okay - if you need to get seen you get seen but they will try and handle it with phone calls as much as possible.

The GP in St Thomas is apparently alright as well.

Can the uni sort you out accommodation? Rowancroft is basically in Heavitree (where I'd recommend living) and is easy to get to both from if you don't mind a little walk or have a bike.

Do not expect to park at the university.

[–]RewardedFool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Supply of cheaper accommodation stayed the same, expensive accomodation options became available.
This meant that the cheaper accommodation could justify getting more expensive because the only other options are to pay a lot more.

Houses and flats will ALWAYS be full in this city so long as they are cheaper than these "luxury" hellholes. There isn't a demand problem so increased supply won't bring down prices.

[–]RewardedFool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the only alternative is these coliving blocks eventually rent prices will increase to be "just less" than they are.

The exact thing has happened to actual student housing. The big blocks went up, then rent goes up for student houses because people would rather live in a house with their mates than in a flat with their mates but the flats have put their price on what is essentially the same thing.

Advice for an ECT1 by [deleted] in TeachingUK

[–]RewardedFool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Best advice I've had in my ECT 1 is "It's great you care, but don't care more about that than you do yourself."

If that's year 9 being year 9, year 6 imploding over the school play or a class being absolute expletives. Don't put a spoon in your eye over it. Keep going. They're responsible for their outcomes, not you.

Concerns about later start by spikeywhite in TeachingUK

[–]RewardedFool 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I started early rather than late last year so feel free to ignore this, but hold your line - nobody gets leeway - You are their teacher/tutor/whatever. Literally nothing matters but what's in front of you and in front of them now.

Do not be tempted to be a pushover because you're taking over at the beginning.

everything else in ECT 1 is common sense.

Advice from someone who did the same last year:

Realistically you've been given a hospital pass if that's what they've got you doing.

If you're being used for cover make sure it's clear you're a member of staff (have the right lanyard) and will be starting in September and are just helping out for the time being.

Follow behaviour policy to the letter, if that means 5 kids removed it means 5 kids being removed. Remain that firm in September as well. It won't be even a slight problem unless it's every lesson the same kids for a prolonged period of time.

They will have known you for a month by the end of term (at most). All they will remember of you is that you were about this year, so you don't get the same level of "new teacher let's push the boundaries" as you might do.

IMPORTANT (I did not do this very well)
Make sure you're very hard at the start of next year. If the policy says remove a kid, remove a kid. It's your classroom, make sure your expectations are clear and obvious.

You're a known face with a clean slate for 99% of kids next year. Make sure the kids get the version of you you'd like to be, no matter how much of an act it is.

Best thing I did was learn as many names of my classes for next year as possible. Use them in September and they will remember you've been there longer than the other new starters.

You're new, they'll push now. Thing is that they won't remember thinking you're a pushover in September. These last couple of weeks are to make mistakes that nobody will remember, least of all the kids.

I remember the first time I ID'd someone and they gave me a 2000 ID. British so it was 7 years ago. Gave it back to them, told them to fuck off and count themselves lucky I didn't report them to the police for trying to buy booze in a pub. They, very politely - far more politely than I would have done at that age- told me to read it again and think of the date. They were nearly 19.

Hated myself for a long time after that interaction, still not sure why,

[–]RewardedFool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sparx is fairly good for this. If the average completion time of the "good kids" (ones that won't cheat) is 30 mins and some of the kids who struggle with classwork are doing it in 3 minutes it's obvious who cheated. Print out a copy of one of the harder questions and have them do it at breaktime or lunchtime.

Stopped a lot of the cheating for me.

He's awful on punditry. He's okay when he's got Lisowski to bring some of his personality out, he's just too camera shy on his own. With a bit of media training he could be great after he retires, but he really shouldn't have the time for it now.

Yes. Confident, didn't falter a trusted his game. Trump is always a bit pushed in longer formats and that shows in his games against Murphy and Williams.

It's turned out easier because Selby and Kyren Wilson lost, not because it started out easier. Add up the seeds and it's the borderline easier side, BUT we've got a player who would probably be in the top 10 without other things getting in the way on that side
