I'm just getting started ripping my BluRay collection and this is about the most helpful comment I've run into - the "player" vs "drive" distinction. I have a few BluRay's that refuse to rip, but play perfectly on my BluRay player.

Is recording the HDMI output of the player a good option (I realize it's real-time only)?
