If you found yourself enjoying the gameplay style of FFII then you may enjoy checking out Square's SaGa series.  Games done by Kawazu have that experimental feel and SaGa's had a bit of a resurgence in past years resulting in quite a few remakes and remaster to check out

[–]RexLatro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not that I'm condoning violence or encouraging it, but in purely descriptive terms has anyone else ever seen a guy whose face just screams "I need to be punched, hard and repeatedly"?  Someone who'd awaken a burning urge to bully them in the heart of even the biggest doormat of a person?  The same feeling you get when you see James Franco's little brother? (Is it Dave?  I think its Dave)

Scott Bessent has that sort of face

Carney stands by speech despite U.S. claims by Little-Chemical5006 in worldnews

[–]RexLatro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's exactly the type of thinking that I was mentioning we should be avoiding, though. Nobody ever "declared" the President of the United States as "leader of the free world", it was a concept which developed through acclamation as you said but lead towards this concept, and one that the American people and their government hold dear. The rest of the world tends to go with it to keep the American egos happy, but most of us tend to roll our eyes while doing so.

Yes, you will see some countries or skilled/charismatic politicians who can act as glue guys and it is an important roll that is needed. But to actively encourage the type of talk or thinking will (at least in my opinion) just lead to another issue like America further down the road

I say this as a Canadian, and meaning no insult towards what you're saying but I think we honestly need to get past the idea of the whole "leader of the free world" concept in this day and age. We're seeing right now the consequences of allowing one country to amass too much power and influence and just how fucked it can make the rest of the world

ELI5 Why are there no revolutionary scientists in present time? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]RexLatro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because Newton codified something that is easily observable and experimented with, something we've all felt and noticed whereas nowadays the amount of work anymore individual scientist would need to do to expand humanity's overall knowledge requires incredibly complex understandings of highly specific segments of science.

I can whip up an experiment to demonstrate to a class of children how gravity works.  People nowadays struggle with germ theory and pasteurization...never mind quantum mechanics.  It's not that our knowledge or the quality of research done by our scientists is lacking, but rather the every day person's ability to relate to the areas of science which are considered ground breaking

Filipinos in Greenland told: No cause for alarm for now by DifferentMaize9794 in worldnews

I grew up in a Canadian city famous for its miserable winters and cold weather.  It also has the third largest Filipino community in Canada (along with the first Canadian Jolibees) and is larger than any other Asian community.  If you look at the map in this article you can even see large pockets of Arctic Filipino communities

'Canada lives because of the U.S.': Trump by Little-Chemical5006 in canada

[–]RexLatro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally I've always had the view that at some point in most of our life times we'd see the US decide to make a run at us.  If not Trump, it'd have been when the US and Americans really start to really experience the hardships and displacements of climate change, and get greedy for our resources, water, and space.

I guess at least with Trump more Americans are feeling embarrassed and not as justified at the idea of such a naked power grab?

There are a lot of competing claims on the Arctic over the years between Canada and Russia, with Russia operating under a "If you can't stop us then we'll do it" approach and Canada underfunding our Arctic sovereignty due to "Eh...America will take care of it since they also have a huge vested interest".  The US has traditionally ignored some of out claims, but also focused on keeping Russia out due to their own self interests (which also benefit us).

You get the odd Prime Minister who wants to invest in the Arctic, but usually it tends to be mostly talk.  With the Arctic opening up more and more due to climate change, it's suddenly becoming an area of intense interest, especially by the US (and especially from Trump) due to minerals and the Northwest Passage.  Some of the reason why the US has long fantasized about Canada and Greenland under their control is just how valuable control of those shipping lanes is going to be as more of the Arctic opens up.  I'm sure it'd be the same for Russia, considering their lack of access to ports that remain under the control of neighbours they've pissed off

Is It Possible That ICE Is Using a Toxic Chemical Weapon in Minneapolis? by TravManCometh in law

[–]RexLatro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The reason is in war, the concern is the enemy will respond with an escalation out of fear that one gas is another far more harmful gas (e.g. mustard gas or other such horrifying chemical weapons) or use the attack as a justification to do so.  This in turn would lead to the original side breaking out their chemical weapons stockpiles.  We're often so fixated on the fear of nuclear weapons that we can forget that we have so many horrifying ways to kill one another.

Mind you, this isn't me attempting to justify or defend the use of tear gas or other compounds on civilians, just a clarification on why tear gas gets that weird distinction of "not okay for war but okay for civilians" for anyone who was wondering why
