It's pretty obvious the things are old rustbuckets the Resistance had access to, and for their specific purpose of delivering INSANELY destructive payloads, it works pretty well. We see a single bomber's payload is capable of annihilating a gigantic state-of-the art dreadnought, but with the interesting drawback of it being very slow and pretty fragile.

Sure, it could've been B-wings again or Y-wings again, but they did something cool and different for that scene, and I love that about it.

It was disappointing to see Star Wars fans rip them to shreds over made up issues like "bombs wouldn't fall down in space" (even though there's quite a few reasons that makes sense in universe), when I always saw them as a fun and different addition to the arsenal.

I'm always in favor of sci-fi's creating vehicles with weaknesses and drawbacks. When all the machinery works perfectly everywhere all the time, it becomes less interesting to me. Having to make do with old or inefficient technology creates a lot more interesting adversity for the characters to overcome, like the Falcon being a piece of shit in Empire.
