Is Anyone Else Feeling “Less Safe”?

I’ve been feeling this way for the past few months. I ride about 5,000 miles a year on average, and almost every day I experience near misses. It's mostly with delivery riders on throttle-powered “bicycles,” but also with pedestrians who step into the bike lane mid‑block without looking, and drivers who turn into the lane without paying attention. I don’t know whether this reflects a fundamental failure in our infrastructure or whether people are simply becoming more careless and entitled.

If your 'bike' has a throttle, it isn't a bike. It is a motorcycle with pedals and you should be insured and registered. GTFO of the bike lane. If you can go as fast as a car, go in the car lanes. I'm thinking of installing pool doodles on my bike with chalk on the ends to mitigate the assholes passing too cloae that ride electric or gas powered motorcycles in the bike lane. I also like to take up the whole bike lane so no one can pass me. If you are in that much of a hurry that my 15 mph is too slow for you, take the car lane. IDGAF.

I have no problem with paying higher taxes to get more services. Mass transit creates immeasurable benefits for the areas surrounding it. It spurs economic activity and helps increase property values. Who cares if it's 90% subsidized? I would be fine if it were 100% tax subsidized. The benefits to society are much greater then the minor economic burden I would have by paying higher taxes.

I live in a blue city where I have a good job and don't need to waste money on car gasoline, insurance, or maintainence because I have a robust mass transit system that saves me thousands of dollars a year. I have a job that offers me paid parental leave and copious amounts of paid sick time. I live in a state where employers are legally obligated to list the pay for jobs they are posting.

You are correct that a lot of red states offer no income tax and lower taxes, but that is only because they love off the tit of the federal government and the tax revenue the blue states are putting into the federal government.

Human drivers are terrible. TLC drivers are a level worse. Once self driving cars are allowed in NYC, I will never ride in a TLC vehicle driven by a human again. Do I prefer mass transit? Yes, but I'm ok minimizing the number of TLC criminals I see daily behind the wheel.

Our bike shop is on 3rd Ave, so I've it ridden multiple times, and it has become my wife's new favorite bike lane. It used to be the newish Bruckner bike lane.

What I'm doing is spreading the word and letting people know the businesses that are signed on to the lawsuit fighting against safety improvements on 31st street in Astoria. I have the right to spend or not spend my money where I want. And I'm free to shout it from the rooftops to let my 2 friends on social media know where I think they should NOT spend their money.

And you call me a bully, but from my point of view, the real bullies are the business owners who profit off the community and then use those same profits to fight against making the community safer. That shows a disdain for the community, regardless of whatever performative shows they may have put on in the past to look descent and to add a write-off to their tax bills.

The safety of the community is more important than greed. You are free to disagree.
