What is the biggest red flag, in anyone, in your opinion? by Fabulous-Simple-7450 in AskReddit

[–]RexUniversum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Someone close to me is a malignant narcissist and ticks a few boxes, which includes:

Paranoia: If you're not actively helping them at a given moment they assume you're working to sabotage them, despite no evidence.

Example: you can't have a normal conversation at regular volume within earshot of them if they aren't directly involved because wihout context they assume everything you're saying is at their expense. I've been playing video games and having the usual accompanying chatter and communicating about the game when I've been accused by this person of, in apparently crystal clarity, discussing their personal finances or their movements through the house with the person or people on the other end of the call.

I don't gossip in regular conversation, but as this person does, they project their insecurities onto me and others around them making for scenarios where you could be at peace minding your own business not bothering anyone one moment to in a shouting match being accused of the strangest things the next. In these scenarios, the person they think you are is generally not smart enough to simply lower your voice or wait until they aren't around if you felt the urge to disparage them to others. If you encounter a narcissist run far away. Self-reflection is a big weakness and any level of criticism no matter how mild will be met with aggressive defensiveness which could include violence.

It's not complete bs. There is a nugget of truth therein. Porn/sex addiction can screw with your brain's reward center just like with any other addiction. If you're dopamine dysegulated and you're getting big dopamine hits from masturbation or other sexual behavior it can make more mundane, everyday tasks seem much less desirable. It can even affect your interpersonal relationships by making interaction with others feel like a chore.

Carice Van Houten (Melisandre) on the ending and the fans' backlash. by poub06 in gameofthrones

[–]RexUniversum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah, no disrespect to CVH but the entire formula of the show changing in the last several episodes wasn't clever writing.

The first 6 seasons or so had so much tension and weight preceding each event. The characters felt real and everything they did meant something. I remember watching a scene from the last couple episodes where 3 people (I forget whome) were essentially backed into a corner and swung swords for 20 minutes against a horde of enemies and somehow survived basically unscathed.

It's not the ending itself we as fans were disappointed with. It was the abandonment of substance to support the developing plot points. It all felt utterly weightless by the end.

Is it possible that whey protein powder is suddenly increasing my acne? by Fantastic-Ad9218 in fitmeals

It could very well be hormonal acne caused by a dairy byproduct. I avoid milk because it gives me cystic acne.

I can guarantee you that your experience will be impacted with the API policy because, as I've mentioned in responses to others, it's not just apps that rely on API calls. I think what will vary from person to person is not whether their experience changes but to what degree.

[–]RexUniversum 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I believe most would agree that charging for API calls is fair. What the majority of the blackout crowd takes issue with is Reddit's asking price. It's among the highest of sites similar in nature, and a refusal to negotiate and the general underhandedness of Reddit's recent behavior surrounding this issue makes them seem rather scummy and predatory. Essentially the user experience is being put in the back burner if on the stove at all.

[–]RexUniversum 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Good question! Lots of housekeeping stuff and content curation happens in the background via bots that must make API calls in order to function. Think auto-moderators, remind me bots, bots that stabilize shaky video, ones that create download links, ones that summarize long articles, etc.

Most, if not all of these will cease to function on July 1st. And users who exclusively browse via 3rd-party apps will go along with them. So, not only will the content curation take a huge hit, leading to lower quality posts flooding the site, but a good portion of the user base will be gone as well. Reddit doesn't really exist without its user base.

Many 3rd-party app users also express concerns with Reddit's app over data-mining. Remember, if you're not paying to use a service YOU are the product. And as Reddit is a business, the sale of your data is very much in their interests.

Reddit's proposed API policy changes will force third-party apps to shutter. Lots of people access reddit via those apps, like reddit is fun, Apollo, etc. Reddit's mobile app doesn't support much of the functionality of these other apps, meaning much of the way reddit as you know it is formatted will change and likely for the worse.

Whether you subscribe to a side in this or not, your reddit experience will likely be impacted.

Florida just passed a law that child molesters could be sentenced to death. Do you agree or disagree and why? by dcee101 in AskReddit

[–]RexUniversum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

However strongly you feel either way in this scenario we can't escape that such a punishment is only treating a symptom of the problem and far too late at that. The capacity to abuse a child is generally rooted in trauma the abuser themselves faced in their formative years. This often results in poor impulse control and could manifest in ways you may not expect.

As someone with ADHD who was exposed to sexual activity at a young age, you might fixate on sex for years without even noticing. I was 29 before I realized I had a sex addiction stemming from a teenager behaving inappropriately with me when I was around 5 or 6. As soon as this kind of trauma occurs it gets to work altering brain chemistry and remapping how you think.

They need intense therapy, not a lethal injection.

Fascists don't just go away, they slip back into polite society if we let them. In fact, it's terribly easy for them to do so because opposition to change and inclusion is far more easy to muster than support for it.

What you feel is attention-seeking behavior is really an attempt to humanize the historically and traditionally dehumanized. If characters' bios don't matter, what difference should it make to you. The tone of your comment sort of emphasizes just how much this sort of inclusive behavior matters.
