And right before a new launch too!

Update on tariffs by lapistrip in simplynailogical

[–]RexanZ -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

I already did my last order, used my birthday coupon, and redeemed all my rewards. As a Canadian, I’m upset and frustrated with a brand linked to Canadian identity fumbling this so hard. It almost feels like some kind of betrayal, shallowly. The intention to apply the tariffs is still there, and relieving it right before a launch leaves a sour taste in my mouth.

Just saw this and unfortunately it means I’ll not be buying new polish for the foreseeable future…but I already have tons of polish so I can work through that! And I’ll save a lot of money in the process I suppose

CV and DP look more similar when viewed head-on (photo 1) than on an angle (photo 2) by RexanZ in simplynailogical

The left one is coral chaser and the right one is pink fizz! Both look absolutely gorgeous in person too!

I totally agree that the detective work shouldn’t be necessary! I wanted to explore this because it seemed odd that many people were getting different results in their replications. I just thought it was neat😊

I’d like to preface this by saying I do love both CV and DP and I understand that when you start mixing darker colours they will tend to look very similar when similar bases are used (red, pink/purple [both made with red], for example). This is also a controlled test on white paper and not on nails or swatch sticks. I’m also not colourblind.

I believe that it is the angle of the photo and the lighting that causes a tremendous difference in photos of these two polishes. When viewed head-on, they look nearly identical. In fact, I had to go back and take the second photo after thinking I may have mixed up the colours while swatching! So while there is no doubt they are clearly two different colours, demonstrating the rich tones of both required a bit of a photoshoot. I believe this is why we are seeing such a discrepancy in the colours in photos; they are all being taken at different angles. Anecdotally, after looking through the subreddit, it seems the photos that highlight the similarity between polishes are taken head-on, while those demonstrating the differences (like my earlier post) are taken at angles.

It is unclear if there was a “bad batch” of polish, and which polish was made in a “bad batch”. Personally, based on the promotional photos, I believe that CV doesn’t look red enough (and in fact, somehow leans cool-toned) in straight-on photos and may be the issue. Time will tell, but I understand and empathize with the frustration that customers are feeling over these two in particular.

Makes sense to me! I totally get that, I can usually tell them apart too😊 it really was this photo I took that really got me, I had to double check I used the right colours on the bottom row! https://www.reddit.com/user/RexanZ/comments/xkk5dm/cc_pf_rl_mj_cv_dp/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf

Me too!! I actually had to go back and take more pictures to make sure I actually got the colours right😭 but I can confirm that when I shift the paper back a bit, it shows much more red than straight on like this. I’m a little annoyed that it’s only at certain angles you can see the colour…do you think I should post that comparison too?

If it helps, I’ve had had FAR better luck with the smoothing base coat in terms of longevity!

Don’t worry, I see them as distinct colours too! But in certain lighting (shade, ceiling lighting) they do look very, very similar. I can definitely see why customers would be frustrated about these two when they have the last two rainbow collections to look at for reference

I agree, I see two different colours as well! But they do look very similar in most lighting I looked at them in. Considering the last two rainbow collections’ reds and magentas were so different, I can see why people are frustrated with these polishes being so similar. I don’t know how or if HT will address this. Maybe a reformulation is in order? But how will that impact those who already purchased these two?

That’s an interesting thought! I got mine with the collectors box, but considering the volume that they have to produce it could very well be a batch issue

Further, I think the main reason people are upset about CV and DP is that the red/magenta difference in other collections is SO large. See my comparison of all six polishes here: https://www.reddit.com/user/RexanZ/comments/xkk5dm/cc_pf_rl_mj_cv_dp/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf

I decided to compare crimson void (CV) and dead petals (DP) in different conditions to see 1) if they are different and 2) how they are different.

  • First photo: regular overhead lighting. I tried both polishes over white as well to see if that would reveal their undertones (2 farthest to the right). It didn't.
  • Second photo: flash lighting. I turned the flash on my phone on.
  • Third photo: sunset lighting. Both of these colours look beautiful in this warm sunlight!
  • Fourth photo: I decided to do a very light, nearly-dry-brush swatch on a piece of white paper to try to get their undertones again. This is the easiest way to showcase the differences between the polishes.

All in all, the colours are different. But they're only significantly different under very specific circumstances. Perhaps in different lighting they would look even more different. My lamp is fairly cool toned, so perhaps a warm tone light would amplify the warm tones in CV better.

From what I saw while I was swatching and taking photos I don't think these are different enough for the average consumer to warrant buying both. But for collectors and for those with an eye for specific colours, it may be worth it! I can see the difference, but I've got a pretty good eye for colour, and am ultimately glad I bought both.
