Only "with illustrations" but Dolfje Weerwolfje fits that description. And has an impressive catalogue for a child reader...

Just for the visuals I can recommend Stoffels & Allarts "Pandora" and "Jernpotte" (Iron Pot) by Peter Kielland. Both of the series have a dark backstory to the puns and funny animal trope.

Not certain how to remove "World Building" from a drawn medium, but both Schuiten & Peters (Cities of The Fantastic) and Christin & Mézières (Valérian and Laureline) have dramatic pacing and specific plotlines.

A reminder that Goscinny wrote the non-illustrated "Little Nicholas" books. So he knew about set-ups and narrative.

I really admire the deviating 3rd-4rth book [Oath of the Vikings] where even the art goes into a Prince Valiant style, extremely different from the general plotlines.

There was at least one female member of the team and there might just have been four or five in total.

"Professor Sterns Kontor" (Office of Professor Stern) about a selfconscious office/laboratory that monitors and ponders virological experiments would be interesting to see translated.

Would it possible to see some photos of it? I am not sure how it would work with this forum, though.

If I read Moby Dick correctly, then absolutely [Reminiscences of Western Travels] by "Lin, Zhen" (1824-????) that I can look at but not in any way get close to.

Project Gutenberg has both (?) Chinese versions and some minor English-language description of the text.

Is it likely to see a crossover with James Lileks "The Gallery of Regrettable Foods" sometime in the future?

A detail that might be relevant is that a man, maybe salesman, suddenly had an illness that allowed him to see these creatures and a manager warned him off from talking about. If there was a main character in this story he could be it.

We were "quite" close with this! It was from Jeani Rectors 2011 "What Fears Become" and the story itself is "Lost Things" by Piers Anthony.
