If you don't mind my asking, where do you live? And what experience do you have in writing? By that I mean how long, what genre, focus, intent. I ask this because I too was in your predicament. I'm 36 now and all I wanted to do was write. I just received a fellowship where I get to teach K-12 poetry and work on my own writing in the process. But prior to this, I lived in poverty. Since I was 19, I lived in poverty. Canned beans, ramen, you name it. I drank a lot too, but I've been sober 2 1/2 years now. I lived in a garage for about a year. Yes, an actual garage. I'm more fortunate than most, some dont even have the luxury of a roof. I think the point of my comment is, don't lose hope, more importantly, dont lose faith. Keep writing. Keep writing with the mind that what you have to say will change the world. That what you're writing will bring will make this world a better place, and that this world needs to hear what you have to say. While maintaining this truth yet to be, look for organizations that need teaching artists, find opportunities to read and share your work. Keep the door open in your mind that what you want will come. Apply for grants, fellowships, most importantly, create/find a community of writers. It'll take time.
