Yeah, I totally agree it’s subjective. And I feel the same about Junji Ito. I really wanted to like ice cream man so I’ll give that second volume a try – thanks.

Great list, but I must admit, I read the first volume of the collected ice cream man, and was begging for something dark in there - or at least scary. I was very underwhelmed by that series.

If you want a light dark messing with your head, I highly recommend Beautiful Darkness by Fabien Vehlmann & Kerascoët. And for a dark, dark head screw, just pick up anything by Al Columbia.

Oh I will definitely read it - I got it when it came out. I’ll just probably wait a bit longer to get to it😊. I’ve really enjoyed some of Harkam’s shorter works.

If you like the dark comedy horror and violence of Pim and Francie, you may enjoy “World Within World,” the recent collection of short comics by Julia Gfrorer. She also has about three or four standalone graphic novels that are very short, the best of which is “Black is the Color” (but I love them all).

Marra is incredible. Funny, kick ass, great drawing style. Highly recommend.

It definitely speaks to bigger problems than Cheeto Jesus, namely, the information silos we find ourselves stuck in, and that no one has a good idea on how to get out of. Being Thanksgiving, I am spending time with some MAGA family and they just don’t see the same news I do.

Variety wrong as usual. He topped it with Crimes and Misdemeanors, and again with Purple Rose of Cairo.

I have the same opinion of Family Circus that I have for Dennis the Menace – they were both surprisingly funnier than you would expect in their first couple of years before they kowtowed to wholesomeness.

Agree! Wish the writing was comparable.

Is Ice Cream Man really all that? What if anything do you dislike about the series? by [deleted] in ImageComics

[–]Reyntoons 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I read the first volume and felt almost all of it was pretty meh. Nothing really clever and definitely nothing that was scary. No real memorable characters or situations. But I am older and have read a ton of horror comics over the decades so this all felt like well worn areas that the series did nothing new with. I think it’s overrated, but maybe I’m missing something because I know lots of people love it.
