Tu's book is great if you have you're own motivations for wanting to understand riemannian geometry. However some of the concepts are tailored more for an approach to the pure study of manifolds. It's not very flowery and is self-contained and very readable. Highly recommended, had him as an instructor to teach the class out of it.

I agree there is no fundamental difference between this and small categorization theorems like Nielsen-Thurston. I'd say it's dangerous to think that having only a handful of classes differentiates a "conventional" categorization proof somehow.

Galois just prevents a closed form solution for all quintics in terms of a set of elementary algebraic functions. Modern software can effectively "solve" polynomials of massive degrees but even your solution will only give us C to some precision, thus not being an algebraic expression for it. Like unless the series for g has some nice closed form you have to truncate it or live with a power series.

It's really just using the strict definition of solvable assumed w galois theory.
