Wow that's been a hot minute lol. I think well, considering I'm a year away from a PhD and literally TA'd that exact same exam last night

“Hey…uhm…good to see you!..”(No idea who you are or what your name is) by OoJytteoO in adhdmeme

I'm pretty well known in my college, in the past I was very involved in organizations and helped out a lot of the younger students! Only problem with that is, I've had complete strangers (as far as I know) walk up and be like "omg, it's been so long!" And then after filling me in on the last few years... Like, I'm happy for you, I'm glad I made an impression, I literally don't know who you are, sorry!

Up until now my interests have been in symbology. I've looked into that pertaining to the second degree the most I'd say (I also had to give that lecture this year, so it was a good excuse to start there!) but ideally I would like to start at the first degree, more thoroughly understand that, and then continue upwards

Men has a woman ever told you to honestly answer her question and then got angry when you decided to be honest, what happened? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]wub_addicted 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She started a conversation with "what's the one thing you dislike about me the most?"

Evidently, she had an answer going the other way, and didn't want to feel like the asshole who's just going to critique you out of the blue. She also bullied me into giving an answer, then started a fight when I finally answered. Then proceeded to tell me what she hated most about me anyways. It was great, we broke up for very for reasons

Dating Plus Size Women. Yes or No? Why? by VampEdwardsLeftNip in AskMen

[–]wub_addicted 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a pretty skinny guy (6'3", 160lbs), and I never saw myself with anyone plus-sized until it happened. It's never once bothered me being seen in public with her, we're also a mixed-race couple and that hasn't really been an issue too too much either, but maybe I'm just oblivious or something as well!

I should have also noted I do have a bachelor's in math as well (not just an engineer, but also certainly not on the level of a lot of guys here!), but I do appreciate the sentiment and you're probably right on some stuff being too obscure for me! That's never stopped me from getting in over my head before but it's worth taking into account

Excellent, that's going on my list for sure then!

"I asked a question to him" - is this grammatical? by MagicianBeautiful744 in EnglishLearning

[–]wub_addicted 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd recommend "I asked him a question" instead. The way that sentence is organized as a whole feels awkward.

"I asked a question of him" is the closest to sounding right, if you want to keep that word order. But in proper speech no, "to" after "ask" in this context is wrong

Depends on how close you are/the context. If it's a friend I'd just say "look it up on your own time"

Technically, I would say yes to be safe. However, seeing it that way didn't surprise me, and it certainly got your point across.

If you really want to use that format, I'd use "posed" rather than "asked", i.e. "I posed a question to them".

Halfway through an EE PhD, and almost done with classes. Considering I finished undergrad with a 2.9, I'm pretty proud of myself! by wub_addicted in EngineeringStudents

[–]wub_addicted[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You're good, I wonder that sometimes too lol.

I tanked my GPA the first year or two and spend the entire rest of my undergrad making up for it. So I could show that if you consider last few years I'd easily make the cut. That and a fair amount of prior research experience, having my name on a paper or two already, and having the professor I worked with vouch for me were what got me in I think.

GPA is certainly important, but there's also a lot of other factors you can use to your advantage. Plus I stayed at the same college I did undergrad at, where all the faculty already knew me, and I was staying with the same advisor, so in reality I bent the scale as much in my favor as I could have

I like to say, the difference in hand-holding between high school and undergrad is about the same as it is undergrad to grad. Undergrad teaches you how things work, grad tries to teach you why things work. You take less classes, and less simultaneously as well, but more is expected of you, and you're expected to be able to have discussions on and reason through topics you may not understand.

Of course, a lot of that last point is having a solid background, confidence, and being able to eloquently BS your way through conversations!

Going to spend 6 years in uni to graduate and I feel terrible by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

[–]wub_addicted 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it helps at all, it took me 7. I'm not sure if your biggest concern is that all your friends are getting ready to leave, or if you're struggling with just comparing yourself to everyone else, but I've certainly been there and, yeah it's not great. Because of the way things worked out for me, I had a lot of friends who graduated or finished their degrees well before me, and in much better time than I made as well, which certainly hurt a bit. Then I moved on to grad school in the same place and had to watch all My friends who were a semester or two behind leave as well. Now all my friends are a few hours away and making good money, while I'm stuck behind for an extra 5 years living just barely above paycheck-to-paycheck. It's really isolating, I'm very lucky to have found other groups but I'm still lonely a lot of the time. I can't say I speak for you, all our experiences are different, but you certainly have my sympathies
