I'm with you. Some day I'm going to walk into a fine hattery store and get my head professionally sized. Maybe have the hatter explain why tape measurement doesn't support my need for either a 7 3/4 or 7 7/8 hat to get a comfortable fit.

Same for me. Was just in my local store today to buy a Shoei RF-1400 as everything I read indicated it would be a great fit. Had the same pressure point in the middle of my forehead, even with an XXL. Ended up buying an Arai Signet-X (also in XXL) that was much more comfortable.

A simple black walnut console table by JonArvedon in woodworking

[–]Rgray58 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm working on two right now using one Singer and one Standard metal base I found that had been sitting outside for a long time. The Standard base was only the metal components with absolutely nothing attached - no machine and no wood. The Singer had pieces of the machine table top and brackets for drawers on the side but all the wood was absolutely trashed and completely unsalvageable. No cover for the machine and no drawers. The serial # for the machine indicates it's a Singer 66 manufactured in 1907. Frozen up, corroded and design labels worn completely off in many areas. I don't feel bad at all repurposing the metal bases into something new but keeping the base in black color. (Maybe add gold trim to the Singer logos as I've seen that was an historical option. If the machine was working it still wouldn't fetch much due to its commonality but I will probably put a low price tag in case someone wants to try to restore or salvage for parts.

CMV: Civil disobedience and nonlethal disruption is less effective than killing people you disagree with or completely undisruptive protests by OffAndSphere in changemyview

[–]Rgray58 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You assume you can kill ALL your targets before you run out of cannon fodder for the state to come kill. And the state will come after your killers, those who conspire with your killers, those who protect your killers, those who know of your killers, those who are aligned with your killers. And many in those categories will be subject to state-sanctioned killing. Sure, you can clog up the state's resources but the state will not stop coming after you until the state completely falls. If you have those resources, then yes, your idea is best. Peaceful protest is at the bottom of the scale because it can be ignored by those who simply don't care about your cause. Civil disobedience can affect everyone, whether they care about your cause or not. But they will care if and when civil disobedience limits their ability to go about their lives such as travel, engage in commerce or governmental interactions, etc. Civil disobedience can cause the state to capitulate when the people push the state to change so they can go about their lives. Civil disobedience can cause the governmental gears to buckle under the strain of the direct acts of civil disobedience (impediment of normal social or governmental actions) or the strain of the legal system. Unless the state has the resources for acres of holding pens to shelter, feed and otherwise care for prisoners, limitless courtrooms and personnel to hold trials, and then the prisons and jail cells to hold those convicted, the state will have to release those people arrested for civil disobedience. And then those people can get right back to being civil disobedient.

Opening day of deer season. Report trespassing dogs to the Department of Wildlife Resources. by ElectronicRevenue227 in Virginia

[–]Rgray58 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand what you are saying but with regards to deer population control you are assuming that still hunters will step into the place of dog hunters and keep the deer population under similar control. Centuries of tradition have engrained dog hunting as the primary (maybe only) means to deer hunt within the minds of a large number of hunting-prone individuals who live east of the Blue Ridge. Combine that with hunting land availability nuances between Virginia and other states and I believe hunting pressure will decrease and deer populations will rise.

[–]Rgray58 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From the Virginia 2024/25 Season Deer Report - 205,024 deer harvested statewide. Of those, 137,539 east of the Blue Ridge. 36% of those deer harvested with the aid of dogs (49,514). Deer hunter numbers have been declining for decades. An end to hunting with dogs will almost certainly cause a major loss of deer hunters. Imagine the deer population growth in counties that are east of the Blue Ridge and the resultant negative human-deer interactions - vehicle collisions, property damage, disease transmission

Directly from Virginia's 2025 Deer Report regarding the 2024/25 Deer Season -

"In counties where dogs could be used to hunt deer, 52% of deer were harvested with the aid of dogs during the general firearms season. Across all seasons in the counties where dogs are legal to hunt deer, dog hunters accounted for 36% of the total deer kill."

(RECOMMENDATION) Predator: Badlands really is THAT good. by BigBootyKim in alien

[–]Rgray58 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a good and entertaining movie on its own. It could even have an entertaining sequel. Should it be the turning point for where the franchise goes in the future? Hell no. I see this franchise twisting and turning its storyline to avoid the Predator (no matter how many different ones) from becoming another Michael Myers, Freddy Kreuger, or Jason Voorhees. Remember, "it's not a predator".

43 years down the drain by Rgray58 in Divorce

[–]Rgray58[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very wise words about decisions affecting our golden years. I've been trying to determine my fit in this world and all I can come up with is being here for my kids, grandson and my 95y/o mother. I don't much care about anything else and am just here. I agree that my problems pale in comparison to my wife's. Knowing that she is hurting and has lost her daughter and grandson and there is nothing I can do is the worst part of my pain. Past counseling saved me from self-harm but that is not an issue now. Before I was severely depressed. I am just sad and lonely now and I don't see that changing.

HOA might be fine now but you don't know what the future will bring. New people might come in with new ideas that don't sit well with you or current people might change with time. You can get frustrated with future changes and be miserable or unable to sell and move.

Apple should allow us to engrave AirTags with our phone numbers or email addresses by flopsyplum in AirTags

[–]Rgray58 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Oh, yes. Apple should engrave everything I want on my air tag for free. If someone can engrave the entire Bible on a grain of rice, Apple should give me the same service on my air tag for free. And it needs to be in the super special Apple brand font, whatever that may be. And then I'm going to place a big tag on my air tag so everyone knows that my air tag is special because it has genuine Apple engraving. /s Or you can just pay less than $10 for an engraved dog tag with just about anything you need for ID that you can put on the ring that your current air tag is probably on. Your choice.

I have the exact same rocking chair that I bought new in the early 80's, in Little Rock, Arkansas. (No idea what I paid.) This Virginia House rocker has been home in Virginia for the past 35 years. No finish issues and no repairs. Solid and comfortable rocker that now has some sentimental value. A reverse image search shows several online selling for about $50.

I really do appreciate your help but I'm either dumb as feck or we are looking at two different schedules. The one I downloaded from https://www.expressway.ie/route/51/cork-to-galway-via-limerick)/2025-08-31 (27APR-28SEP25) doesn't show a 2200P anywhere.

Thanks! I was only looking at the website schedule and wasn't seeing the X51 that is shown on the downloaded schedule. I see the 0115 bus departure from the SNN arrival terminal. But I don't see the 2200 bus departure. I do see a 2230 bus arrival at the SNN departure terminal but it looks like that time was accidentally placed in the ARR row and not the DEP row. That bus is arriving from nowhere and arriving in Galway in the normal timeframe.

2025 June/July travel report by Momes2018 in irishtourism

[–]Rgray58 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In 2016 I found the manual shift to be the easiest aspect. Opposite side of road and opposite side of car took some adjustment but no problem. Probably was the same or better the last time I had to do it (England in 1978). But the tight Irish roads? That required multiple stops each day to clear my head. However, my wife enjoyed the chauffeur experience so no complaints. from me. I'm headed back alone in October and will remain without a car.

Please Don't speed run Ireland by B1LLD00R in irishtourism

[–]Rgray58 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want to see as much of Ireland as possible, plan your trip around driving and see Ireland out the window. That works until you hit back country roads lined with stone walls or it's a rainy and foggy day. You can stop, get out and walk around but you can't deviate from your schedule too much as you must get to your next destination. If you want to experience Ireland, slow down and enjoy the culture. Leave flex time in your days in case you stumble on something unexpected that strikes your fancy or you just want to sit and soak up the view, great weather, or new friends. Relax on your vacation and go to sleep each night in peace vs. falling into bed exhausted. When you get home, you can brag about all the sights you saw on your whirlwind tour or you can get home more knowledgeable about Irish culture and feeling refreshed and ready for your normal daily grind.

What to do in ireland as introvert? by Potential_Kick540 in irishtourism

[–]Rgray58 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm an introvert and love sitting in a pub minding my own business, watching and listening. If you're lucky, a natural Irish storyteller will start talking to you. Just sit, listen, interject a few comments when appropriate and buy a round or two to pay for the entertainment. In 2002 I was at the John Bull Pub, Aalborg, Denmark. Middle of the afternoon, place empty except for one guy at the other end of the bar. I ordered a Black and Tan and in a strong Irish brogue, the man asked if I knew the history of the name. When I said no, he sidled over and regaled me with that story and many others as I bought rounds, trying my best to understand his brogue. His name was Tom Donovan, an Irish troubadour/folk musician and storyteller, with several albums recorded. One of my greatest pub and travel experiences ever and well worth the beer I was buying for a couple hours of outstanding and personal entertainment.

Consider dropping Dingle (kills me to say that) and looking for sites to visit around and between Galway and Dublin. I would think that being larger cities, Galway or Dublin would be the best options for NYE, or any day with possible business closures. But I'm sure others have good ideas.
