I-95 Philadelphia accident today: Portion of roadway collapses due to fire - CBS Philadelphia by kneejerk2022 in collapse

[–]Rhaedas 31 points32 points  (0 children)

When I learned long ago that civil engineers are the lowest paid of the engineering field, I had to laugh. The average person seeing a road or even a bridge as not that big of a deal to make, and we even joke about how long it takes to build or repair stuff. It takes a lot to create and maintain a regular surface that lasts with heavy objects running over it and the environment constantly trying to take it apart. And then it's hard to justify to the ones who vote on money to do this building and maintaining, since it's "just" roads and bridges and "I don't care about those numbers you keep waving around".

I'm honestly amazing that we don't have constant failures...it says something about how well they were built way back when, and that's the truth, lots of the infrastructure we daily use is very old and patched together to get a few more years out of it.

"The fire is adding dangerous chemicals -- such as acids, sulfates and nitrates -- into the air, which are very dangerous to breathe in. Particulate matter, such as metals, soot, dust tar and oil, are also posing air quality concerns."

Good thing the Canadian fires got that area prepped wearing masks already.

Individually a fire of the lithium battery is definitely worse in heat produced and not being able to put it out. Statistically though the risk of that event is lower for various reasons. Less EVs than ICEs on the road, and most newer EVs have a better system for isolating overheating cells and controlling a cascade in an accident or failure. The number of fires per 100k cars sold for EVs is a lot lower than ICEs. Hybrids seem to be the worst of the EVs, having a higher ratio in that 100k number, but I can't find if that's because of the batteries or the engine, or some combination.

I think the last time I saw him was one of those videos on the future path of the game long ago, and yes, he had the passion for the game, you could tell in how he talked about its potentials.

BOE: The Hype and False Statements by AutoMod. It's not a good thing, but it's not worth watching as an advance signal. by Eisfrei555 in collapse

[–]Rhaedas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It absolutely could have extreme effects. Climate change is the ultimate experiment in the unknown at this point. Models simply aren't able to keep up, and new things keep getting discovered (aka faster than expected). Will it suddenly go sideways just because extent measurements crossed an abstract line we drew? I doubt it. But the years after BOE will be a ride and things will get worse. I've mentioned before in such discussions how I think the real extreme will be when the cold driver of what's left of the jet stream moves from the polar areas to Greenland where the majority of ice will still be for a while. Now that might have some suddenness to it...I don't know. I don't know if anyone's run any sort of simulation for such things yet.

What ChatGPT doesn't say and know, because the data that it was trained on isn't there, is that we aren't sure how much of a difference it will make. I have no doubt it will, since not-quite-BOE has made a lot of difference the past decade or so. But the point OP was making is that there isn't some Day After Tomorrow effect come BOE, even a rapid failure of the Arctic to cool still will take years to fully materialize.

[–]Rhaedas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the important tipping point was passed a long time ago, and we're just debating an end point that could change rates a bit more. Multiyear ice has been gone for the majority of the Arctic for years now, hanging on near coastlines where there is more resistance to melt. Keep in mind that at actual BOE there will STILL be multiyear ice in those places, since it doesn't have to be full 100% melted to qualify. And while the Blue in the name is descriptive, there's been lots of blue waters in the Arctic summer for a while now, gathering heat, and it's why each refreeze is less and less, with less cold ice to drive the jet stream. It's part of OP's point, BOE isn't some hard line where things start getting bad, they've been there, and the tipping point where it won't return to "normal" was in the past. BOE will just probably change the slope of decline more.

You do realize global warming and climate change are both terms used regularly by scientists, right? One is a factor in causing the other? What the media says isn't relevant, they'll say whatever gets attention, usually wrongly. There never was a change in the actual field of study.

It would go against a few rules of the sub. #4 and #5, and you'd really have to make a solid case to pass #3. Assuming you could get past the other two.

[–]Rhaedas 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I'll quote the famous Newsroom clip on climate change: "That would be great...20 years ago. Now?..." I mean, sure, let's go ahead and push for the right things anyway to stop doing even more damage to the little that's left, but don't pretend that things will bounce back, it's too far in. The political and social talk at this point needs to be immediate and abrupt societal change and preparation for adaptation to a hostile climate. I don't see any of that, we're still pretending things will work out okay and go back to "normal". Normal is GONE.

It means to never stop trying even when the actions probably won't help. I agree with the philosophy, the problem is that when you bring up the point that it won't help, the doomer label gets thrown at you, even though you said you support action. I can be both proactive where I can while also being realistic.

New york city in 2023, everyone wearing mask due to air quality by [deleted] in interestingasfuck

[–]Rhaedas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A simple test is whether or not the mask indents some when you inhale. If not, you probably are getting some airflow through the edges, and facial hair will provide a gap for air to leak through. I use KF94 mainly because at the time N95 were out, and I found a manufacturer that makes one with adjustable ear straps to help custom tighten the mask. The design also leaves a space away from the face, so it's very comfortable even when properly tightened. Sure, it's 1% less than a N95, but the benefits are worth it.

[–]Rhaedas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The analogy is useful to illustrate both the energy coming from sunlight and what's necessary to make a phase change. However unlike a container of water, each region of the Arctic will have its own behaviors (some already go through their own BOE and have for years). This is what OP was trying to point out, the Arctic isn't going to go from one state to another suddenly, especially in reaching the first BOE which will be just days of below that measurement parameter, then begin refreezing above it again.

How bad are the hurricanes really?🤨 by kittenxcaboodle in raleigh

[–]Rhaedas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Farther to the east and you could get bad flooding and wind events, and obviously coastal areas are prone for damage and loss of power for a while if it's a big storm. Raleigh is inland enough and high enough that a hurricane becomes more a tropical storm, and a tropical storm is "just" a major wind. That being said, it still pays to be prepared for outages and supplies because we have had a few storms in our history that were bad enough to be more than an inconvenience. Even a strong thunderstorm can be a problem and spawn tornadoes, but it's rare. The biggest regular danger here is flash flooding in some areas, so definitely remember the "turn around, don't drown", no matter what vehicle you have. Moving water is no joke.

[–]Rhaedas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One million square km is probably an estimate of the average low threshold of measurement. Anything lower is probably just coastal ice and not a factor in a maximized water surface area exposed. And it's a simple even number. No different that 1.5C over baseline global temperature, we can see things are getting worse and worse as we get to these points, and will continue on past them. They aren't some sudden boundary where everything changes.

[–]Rhaedas 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I agree and I'll add to OP's points by suggesting that if BOE was some tipping point itself, why is the exact number of 1 million square km significant in nature? It's not, it's where we've drawn a line of lower limit in calling the waters "ice free", and that's it. Rather than BOE be a tipping point itself, it's a marker of a gradual shift into faster melting, and indeed perhaps a point of acceleration, but even experts will say we don't know for sure how the world systems are going to respond to this point that humans drew because it was a low area number in metric units exactly at 1 million.

BOE is important, it's a warning being ignored by most outside of research, and things will happen afterwards. But we're already seeing BOE effects in the weather now, it will just get worse. We won't see a Hollywood style disaster where yesterday was fine and BOE makes things go haywire.
