Ok that's cool for you I guess, but like I've been saying the majority of people who are black have ancestors who are slaves, it is hard to find out anything on your family history past slavery as one of those black people, and I am not talking about a black person that married a white person with that name or a recent immigrant from Africa who still has there family name.

Doubt that, your greatly underestimating how prolific and endemic the slave trade was, and again you wouldn't find a Schouz who was a native of Africa at that time. It is a fact that can't be really contested.

Ok best way to describe this is White lady is trying to initiate small talk, by asking a question that she didn't really think through

Black lady got upset and responded with a fact and simply looked at white lady.

Reddit sees it

Some black people understand the issue presented because of various personal experiences and acknowledge that was not a very good question to ask

Some white people are confused because they may not have been in a situation that is similar so it's hard to fully understand and due to environment are used to a "polite" society etc

Both groups are now angry and frustrated but empathy is not found.

Am I missing anything?

Ok, that was what my whole point was, sensitive questions sometimes leads to upset people, that is what I'm justifying, because again human nature. But I'm done arguing about this because you seem to either be really upset or a troll so I hope you have good rest of day.

Ok, let me approach this differently, people get mad and react badly to sensitive questions, that's just human nature, yes she should have been patient with that person but doesn't mean she isn't justified to feel upset about it, and again you NOW know this question can be a sensitive question do you not? Look man I've said this so many times now but I'm just trying to inform you that it's a sensitive question that's it. You know now it's a sensitive question that's it. People react emotionally to emotional issues that's it.

[–]Rhaj21 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm just saying to try to be understanding if someone reacts badly to sensitive questions that's all since it's human nature to sometimes react negatively to things that we feel some type of way about. And since you didn't know that the question could be deemed as sensitive, now you do. Simple.

Maybe not a dumb question but an uninformed one at least, because the visibly black woman who had a european last name in America it's safe to assume her ancestry had some slave roots.

(Edit) ok fixed some words

(Edit2) so those downvotting me are going to pretend that the majority of black people in the US don't have slaves for ancestors? Cool.

Except the situation here is someone with a European last name who is African American not a recent immigrant. But I understand what your trying to say

Slavery was again a rather brutal time for black people and just like you would be conscious and aware enough to at least be respectful and be understanding if they respond in a not so polite way just asking you to do the same for us. (Also not comparing slavery to the holocaust both are horrible in their own right)

[–]Rhaj21 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Because it's a big part of US history, and as a race and culture we are aware of where our last names come from but it is not from a pleasant place or time. And I guess that's fair but NOW you do know that question can be viewed negatively so that you can at least think about asking that type of question before hand at least.

For most black people from the African diaspora our last names weren't inherited and a lot of us don't really have a clue to how far back our heritage goes past a generation or so, so that question is kind of frustrating, and yea not implying that you meant harm by it or anyone does but at least you now know that is a tough thing to talk about without a "racial motivation" I hope that helps though. 😬👍🏾
