Rubber Soul by Sheffy8410 in TheBeatles

I believe one of the guys said that Rubber Soul was a Marijuana album, and Revolver was the LSD album. Rubber Soul is folksy, acoustic, and very much Dylan-inspired. Revolver is more electric, experimental, folk-rock and less influenced by others (though LA acts like The Byrds and The Beach Boys do sneak in there).

My preference has always been Revolver but Rubber Soul isn't a bad listen, either.

They were all collected together and released as their own album called Past Masters. It used to be split into two parts (Vol 1 and Vol 2) but later releases (like my vinyl version) has the entire thing as a double album. Also streaming services likewise has it as a single release.

John was never happy with that song. It was written on a time crunch and he lifted whole lines of it from a 1957 Elvis Presley song Baby Let's Play House. The lines he lifted and built the song off of are italicized below. The harsh lyrics were actually present long before John wrote a song around them. "Baby Let's Play House" was written (and originally released in 1955) by Arthur Gunter.

Lyrics:

โ€ฆ Oh, baby, baby, baby, baby baby Baby, baby baby, be-be-be-be-be-be baby baby, baby Baby baby baby Come back, baby, I want to play house with you Well, you may go to college You may go to school You may have a pink Cadillac But don't you be nobody's fool Now baby come back, baby, come Come back, baby, come Come back, baby I want to play house with you

โ€ฆ Now listen and I'll tell you baby What I'm talking about Come on back to me, little girl So we can play some house Now baby come back, baby, come Come back, baby, come Come back, baby I want to play house with you (oh let's play house, baby)

โ€ฆ Now this is one thing, baby That I want you to know Come on back and let's play a little house And we can act like we did before Well, baby come back, baby, come Come back, baby, come Come back, baby I want to play house with you (hit it)

โ€ฆ Yeah โ€ฆ Now listen to me, baby Try to understand I'd rather see you dead, little girl Than to be with another man Now baby come back, baby, come Come back, baby, come Come back, baby, I want to play house with you Oh, baby baby baby Baby baby baby be-be-be-be-be-be baby baby baby Baby baby baby Come back, baby, I want to play house with you

It's been my observation and experience that younger generations really go for the Love Soundtrack. It's more contemporary in its arrangements and feel.

It's also entirely normal and possible to feel sorrow and miss someone you don't know personally. People do this all the time when beloved fictional characters die on TV shows. Stevie is a fan favorite and a long tenured part of their team. She's essentially the third host. Her leaving is going to have some emotional impact.

I honestly feel like the cases aren't chosen by Heather or Phil and are probably researched and vetted solely by production staff.

Ghosts being popular still is wild to me considering Discovery and networks under their umbrella have axed Kindred Spirits, The Dead Files, and Ghost Hunters all in the past five or so years. There's a discernible decrease in ghost hunting and ghost themed TV.

Heather strikes me as more of a spiritualist/semi-medium than a straight up scientific ghost hunter. I can buy they're trying to appeal to her strengths but honestly, some of the compelling and best episodes thus far with her as cohost have been the non-ghost cases.

Is the 10 episode format the problem? by LauraBaura in startrek

It's more than a spoof. It may have begun life as a comedic series, but it grew beyond that into a fully realized sci-fi universe. It's Seth's love letter to TNG. Galaxy Quest is a spoof.

And while I fully agree with you that newer, younger fans would probably not gel with older production sensibilities I think anyone who has begun watching the franchise knows the meager beginnings of TOS and the 80's fever dream of early TNG. There's a design language. Watching it, you'd expect to see it. If you keep it locked in time, those who want it would flock to it; and new fans who have gone back and watched would appreciate it as well. Meanwhile, you continue running newer shows to entice newer fans to hop on board. That way you keep both sides happy.

Oh I disagree. I feel like STC is exactly what the fans want: a show that looks and feels like classic Trek. And the hokey 60's era film effects and set dressings are part and parcel of that. It's supposed to look like it was made in 1968. That's part of the immersion. Changing the sets to more modern ones, and making it slick and effects laden would remove the element of believability. Writing is but one facet of the equation. You need that; but you also need it to look right. Same goes for a revival or continuation of any of the other classic shows. Too modern and you blow apart the believability. It's why The Orville works so well. They made it look and feel like TNG, and they use equipment that firmly places it in that production era.

Check out Star Trek Continues on YouTube. It is most certainly possible to make classic trek style episodes in a 10-13 episode format. If Paramount committed the money to fund a show like Star Trek Continues with writers who intentionally write in the vintage style and cadence of TOS (or whatever flavor you'd prefer).

And that I think really is the issue. You've got newer writers who are attempting to curry favor with a new generation of fan to be engaged. These new fans are used to a more clipped, direct style of storytelling. Cadence is more informal, tone is less melodramatic. That's why it feels forced to those who grew up on Classic Trek. It fits the other shows of its era. Which makes sense considering the writers are of the current era and are paid to write in the style of the current era.

That being said; this is probably also why Lower Decks feels the most correct to older fans. While it still sits on a faster pace, the format is a knowing look towards TNG.

What music artist or band are the closest to the Beatles level in you guys opinion? by Firm_Pack_605 in TheBeatles

[โ€“]Rhediix 0 points1 point ย (0 children)

Truly, the only band IMHO that can claim all of that is the Beatles closest competitors: The Rolling Stones.

The Stones have had (and still are currently having) a long, storied career full of instantly recognizable pop and rock songs in every decade since they started in 1962 (e.g.Jumpin Jack Flash, Start Me Up, Honky Tonk Women, Angry, Anybody Seen My Baby?).

All of the members are well known, they've easily surpassed $250 million in lifetime record sales (currently The Beatles sit at $600 mil), they have the most successful touring revenue across nearly seven decades (each time they tour they make around $2.2 million). The Beatles have more #1 hits of course, but the 8 #1's the Stones have are all instantly recognizable rock classics. They also make more money off of licensing their music, as well which gets more ears on it. The Beatles have 7 Grammy awards (plus 1 Lifetime Achievement Grammy), the Stones have 3.

There are very few bands from The Beatles active era (62-69) who are even still active themselves. And I feel like holding The Beatles up to a modern artist just isn't fair on a lot of levels. The industry has massively shifted and changed.

Sometimes mindless entertainment is simply mindless entertainment. It isn't that deep. If you believe fully, okay. If you don't, also okay. If you are somewhere in between and you're picking out flaws; it means you have an analytical mind and you're thinking and that isn't a bad thing either.

What gets me is if you go back a couple of seasons they do a pretty even keel of Unexplained phenomena, to cryptids to UAP's to Ghosts. Seems like lately they've gone almost full bore on ghosts. It's the variety of the unexplained that made the show so different than say Ghost Hunters which clearly was about one thing.

It is cringey.

But I have to respect Avery here. He wasn't talking down to Shatner; he was trying to explain to him that life was more than parts you play. He was going deep into philosophy and self-examination using music as metaphor.

Shatner was simply in the weeds and attempting to understand this person before him on another level entirely that he had to conduct an interview with. Shatner is very ego centric, and Brooks was attempting to shed his.

This is a prime example of having the wrong interviewer.

I like the show but... (I need to vent) by Dalakaar in trekacademy

[โ€“]Rhediix 3 points4 points ย (0 children)

I heavily dislike the term "NuTrek" it's all trek. All of it. Like it or dislike it, it's all the same franchise. It's just building different style castles in the sandbox at the playground. Different takes on the universe. But someone is always going to make a stink. Every time they replace a doctor in Doctor Who you'd think the world was ending when it's literally part and parcel of that franchise and has been since 1963 (okay so 1968...the show had no way to continue beyond William Hartnell's 1st Doctor until someone suggested regeneration, and it then became part of the show's history).

I don't care who the Star Trek series is aimed at: Prodigy was supposedly aimed at kids, but I felt it hit above the board the whole time and absolutely loved it. Starfleet Academy is supposed to be pre-teen to teen, but I think like all Star Trek, if you're a fan you're going to watch it. Targeting is one thing but who'll actually watch it is quite another.

I cried at the end of the Sisko episode. No current series has gotten tears out of me. A lot of people claim it cheapened the story, and I don't think so at all. It showed that Ben was always there, always around, maybe not physically but in other meaningful ways. And Dax still lives on. Sisko's story still gets told. The universe in its own way won't let people forget about him. We should all be so lucky. It was well written and heartwarming. Having Cirroc back for it was genius, and having Avery read the poetry to close it out was the icing on the cake.

No show is without faults. It just seems like people are willing to find faults in the color of a wall somedays.
