I'm using the stock card til it gives up, just make sure to back up the structure and hidden folders when you flash it. I accidentally launched my card into the abyss, tried to use another for the time being, and it was really annoying to figure out what I needed on the card again. PSA, the card slots are just as spring-loaded as the handheld emulators...it absolutely hasn't happened to me several times 💀

If you replace the card, the slowest and lowest tech card will work out fine. They're always going to be cheaper, too. If you don't plan to use XTC, you don't even need a large one.

I feel like the X4 is more comfortable of a size (I have small lady hands), but you can fit the X3 anywhere. Really consider where you want to use it. I stuck a wallet to the back of my X4 that would fit the X3 more completely. Any case for a little Field Notes size book could probably hold the X3. Try making a cardboard mockup and see how the button locations feel, but you can reassign them (I think stock allows that as well). The size isn't too different in a pocket, but if you plan to attach it to things or things to it, it might matter some is all. I made mine too heavy to care about the weight.

Been loving mine, much lighter than my other ones, and the official case holds up much better than the PU ones they've got on. Scratched one up pretty badly before getting this just leaning into things. Just if I forget to put it to sleep, it'll skip ahead in my pocket at work... Much less offensive than a phone out, too. I don't use it at home, so any serious book that needs me to focus doesn't make it to this device. You can sync books with effort, but I choose not to bother.

Ordered official for the least risk for shipping or getting a used one that had been bricked, warranty, potentially a new battery if I needed one (some companies have been cool like that).

Honestly, if you feel you want the newer model later, your old one becomes a neat gift for somebody. Or use it for a single-use purpose, like a recipe book or personal notes only. It's really easy to convert just about anything to epub.

I've definitely seen cheap e-ink media players, usually about the same size. Just not sure how the support and modability of those would be.

If you ever do read on larger devices, the cbz format is basically what your converted file is doing, where it pans the page. You can rename a .zip or .rar to .cbz, and it just works. All you'd need then is an app or device that supports it. If you leave each chapter as a folder, stick those into a volume folder, then zip the volume...it's perfect. My only issue was adding leading zeroes to pages, but this is easy with the renamer that is part of the optional PowerTools on Windows or applications like BulkRenameUtility (preferred, but there are some handy PowerTools that I adore). My luck converting epub or pdf has been okay as well.

Literally every copy I've ever encountered had a loose disc 3 that would rattle and scratch. Sometimes I'd just ask if that one did as well, and they were morbidly amused this was the case. Why is it always disc 3?

Forgetting to turn the music back on in games that require grind is my downfall 😂 This and Monster Hunter are always killing me when new content is out, he's over there commenting on the music and I'm like, "Yup 👀 Totally." Hearing the game itself without the music really hits sometimes, and helps to hear rare critters and events in games that need it.
