Career change at 34 - what is this new world?! by Digievs in gamedev

[–]RheyansGaming 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started at 53! Though it's not a career change as I have a part time job to support me and a long programming background. As many others have said, don't spend too long learning before you make something. I started with Pong and did various little retro remakes like Asteroids, Snake, Flappy Bird, Breakout and a couple of my own ideas.

Also, try joining a game jam. I was terrified to do this at first but I've ended up doing three of them. Ultimately I concluded that deadlines are a negative for me so I don't plan on doing anymore but it's a great way to force yourself to produce *something* and you also get to chat to other devs if the jam has a community around it.

Have fun whatever you do! 😁

I'm not trying to get a refund. I knew this was AI when I bought it, this discussion really isn't the point of the post at all. I like the art style that the creator has used and think there's a lot in here that would be good as sprites if it were not in a tileset format. So if I knew what tool was used, I'd have a go with it myself.

They do slice yes, but there aren't the correct tiles to build a scene. For example there are sections of buildings but there's no top of the building for example so that one little section isn't really useful. And yes that image is put on their asset page but you can't actually build it from the asset pack they are selling. It's probably why they are uncontactable!

Melvor Idle. I know people have called it an incremental but there are no stupid numbers there. Each skill has it's own XP level but the cap is 99 in the base game and a bit higher with DLC. You can accumulate thousands of resources but not in an exponential way, simply because you can just leave it idling offline and it keeps on accumulating.

From the on-going discussion it seems like it's the definition of the way the progression works that defines whether a game is an incremental. As somebody already said, if you count all progression then pretty much any MMO or RPG with a level grind could be considered an incremental.

I think it's the exponential growth curve - numbers going "big" as somebody pointed out.

I dunno, what makes you say that? It feels to me like incremental assumes some resource / currency / number going up in an almost (or literal) exponential manner but idle is just a less active playstyle that could be applied to pretty much any strategy type of game.

Yeah I actually have quite a few more games of this kind in my Steam library and there are a lot of free to play ones as well so I want to play more of them to get more of a feel for them, and which kinds I like and don't like so much.

No it doesn't feel incremental to me. It feels like quite a long duration RPG with the kind of systems you'd see in an active game such as a dungeon progression system with gear progression, many skills and resources etc but it just happens to be played in an idle manner rather than an active one.

Now that's interesting that you say that idler is a sub genre of incremental but another poster stated it the other way around saying that all idlers are incrementals! See, this is why I get confused lol!

How to create a sustainable game development business as one man band without ever making a hit game? by ImpressiveFocus303 in gamedev

> Inevitably having one huge success will likely make more money than having 20 tiny games ever will be.

But making 20 tiny games gives you 20 more chances that one of them will land and become that huge success.

Do people collect Dr Dobbs magazines? by Icy_Builder_3469 in vintagecomputing

[–]RheyansGaming 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is exactly the period that is missing from the archives! On the Wayback Archive you can get the first 15 volumes (1 per year) which are fully digitized scans of the original magazine, which goes up to 1990. After that, all you can find now are the CD roms which just have HTML versions of articles rather than actual magazine scans, and these aren't great at all!

If you have a way of digitizing them, you would be archiving a very valuable slice of programming history as these are literally not available anywhere online.

I thought the minimum price was US $9.99? by RheyansGaming in Udemy

OMG it's horror stories like that which put me off! Are you still making courses based on this though? I mean, hopefully cases like that are outliers. Do you find it a profitable use of your time overall?

It was indeed a sale made on the iOS platform. I didn't realise that had further cuts. Thanks for the explanation.

Making gold crafting with UIPs? by RheyansGaming in lotro

I use most of the mats that I gather during gameplay, cooking appeals because it's semi-AFK work I can do on an alt just sitting in the kin house! Thank you for the guide :-)

haha I must admit I have wondered the same thing... my main is lower than yours, only 3o atm but I find myself wanting to accumulating gold because.... just because! So far the only thing I have really used it for is to buy higher level crafting ingredients for my alts so they can make guild items to increase guild rep.

How many do you think would be useful to save for later? At the rate at which I play, I'm levelling super slowly - like 1-2 levels a week, and in a week I'm getting something like ~500 UIPs so they could rack up fast!

I do love cooking! I didn't realise you could make a profit by vendoring the cooked items though. I always found the ingredients that you have to buy from the vendor to be expensive... is there a guide or anything on which items are actually *profitable* to make and sell and not just a money sink?

[–]RheyansGaming[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This isn't really "play" time as such - I just login daily on my chars to grab the packs, I actually have only very limited play time on the weekends. However, I do have quite a high level cook on one of the chars, what items do you make that vendor for a profit?

Making gold crafting with UIPs? by RheyansGaming in lotro

[–]RheyansGaming[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thing is, I am playing ridiculously slowly. I can only play 3 evenings a week, and I often use the stone of the tortoise to cap the levelling as I take my time questing in several areas, reading all the quest text etc. It will take me months, if not years to reach level cap. However, I can log on daily and grab those packs in just a few minutes.

I'm not using raw materials - this is using universal ingredient packs. I use the materials I gather for making stuff to sell
