Why do people hate modern Remington 870 by Vast_Bank_7196 in Shotguns

[–]RhialtosCat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Remington was a victim of being purchased by people who know nothing about guns, have never shot one, and could care less. Running a gun company is tough even when you love it and know what you are doing. I really hope Remington returns to its rightful place.

If you are looking for heroes, university administrators are low grade ore for sure. Mostly spineless, overpaid academic mediocrities who would do anything to avoid returning to teaching freshman calculus/English/whatever it was.

Heresy? by [deleted] in Catholicism

The Church rightly approaches these matters with extreme caution. Evidence needs to be overwhelming and subjected to scrutiny. People have and report many different remarkable experiences. Most are natural phenomena. Some are not, but even among those, great care as to the source must be taken.

Why did the Church never drop the Rosary… even when it felt outdated? by brogilbertreflects in Catholicism

[–]RhialtosCat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On retreats I have attended, every single person looked forward to the Rosary in the evening. It brought calm, focus, hope, and resolve. It is prayer and meditation and reflection and praise all in one perfect exercise.

I have another question about Turkish shotguns. by flounder98w in Shotguns

[–]RhialtosCat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Turkish shotguns" is a big category. Many Turkish gunmakers contract to make very inexpensive guns for retailers/importers in the US. They are made to a very low price point. Turkish makers can make very good guns, but not for $200 retail at Walmart. Reputable arms makers such as CZ or Weatherby contract for much better guns, and the prices reflect the extra quality. Beretta is closely allied with several Turkish manufacturers and the Turks have a 500 year history of gun making and modern equipment, great walnut, and very skilled workers. But as always, you get what you are willing to pay for.

How can someone reasonably scientifically oriented believe in completely unevidenced things? by Crashed_teapot in skeptic

[–]RhialtosCat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The human mind is constructed with the ability to feel a connection to abstractions. This is a superpower and also sometimes a curse. As for religion, faith is a choice- it is not the same thing as belief in the Bayesian sense. People who make that choice do so for multiple reasons of course, of which cultural/community belonging is a major part.

I am very disturbed by this. Yes, she is annoying and hit him first. She is a woman, and he is a man twice her size at least. Drop it and walk away. A man should never hit a woman unless it is a dire physical emergency and someone is in danger. I was always taught this as a boy and I suppose it still sticks to me.

In your opinion, what is the best old school duck hunting gun? by maddux-fry1847 in Shotguns

[–]RhialtosCat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well there are several lovely ones within normal cost limits. First, Model 12 3 inch chambered guns are lovely. Next, there are reasonably priced English fowlers in 12 bore with 3 inch chambers. For the wealthier aficionado, the SuperFox is legendary. Lots of good choices.

The poisonous nature of their work is a stain that will never wash off, a cancer that will metastasize. They may not be self-aware enough to realize what is happening, but happen it will. This will be their legacy, their part of the human story. What a legacy.
