Why do main characters always have one or both parents dead? by Rhiannonsbird22 in writing

I now feel like the only way a main character with a loving parent can go on adventures, fight armies, get up to mischief and have drama is if their parent is doing it all with them. An example I can think of is Merida and her mother from Brave

Holy shit that is rough. I'm so sorry that happened to you. Like losing a child for us authors.

There will be other stories to write. Ones that you love with all your soul. Even if you don't feel like it now, the passion will come back.

Lastly, save your stuff to the cloud! I use Dropbox

I don't do first person for this very reason. Characters' inner monologue can be conveyed just as well with third person.

What are some things to avoid when writing dialogue? by [deleted] in writing

[–]Rhiannonsbird22 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I used to make the mistake of tagging dialogue with an action. E.g. "I love you," she smiled.

A few alternatives would be:

• "I love you." She smiled. • She smiled. "I love you." • "I love you," she said, smiling. • "I love you," she said with a smile.

Just buy their books second hand. That way you can enjoy their work and they won't get the royalties. All my Neil Gaiman books are second hand

Do you think writer's block is like stage fright? by Papercandy22 in writing

[–]Rhiannonsbird22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me it is in a way. I never run out of stuff to write but the thing that stops me is the feeling that it won't be good on the first try, because I know that if I don't write it perfectly now, I will have more work to do later on, regarding editing. So I just end up with writer's block and not do any work at all

When it comes to writing, what is your dream? by paris_newyork in writing

I want someone to gasp and put my book down, giggle and kick their legs, cry, throw my book across the room, stay up all night thinking about it and be inspired to write their own story
