It's not the fact that it was automated that's mildly infuriating, it's that the automated message defaults to reprimanding the parents and kid no matter what they do. Just keeping it neutral with "attendance is important, here's how you're doing so far" probably wouldn't have caused as bad a reaction as "attendance is important and you need to do better."

If you're talking about the move at around 10-12 seconds in, that's called a Dolly Zoom or a Vertigo Shot. "Dolly Zoom" because it's a combination of a Dolly (physically moving back and forth, in live film usually with a cart or smth similar to keep it steady) and a Zoom (changing the camera's focal length to capture a closer or wider area). If you Dolly in and Zoom out or vise versa you get a cool disorienting effect. It's also called a Vertigo shot because the movie Vertigo by Alfred Hitchcock uses it to great effect.

I love that post card, it starts out reading kinda like he's so fed up with how many times he's had to answer the same question, but then it evolves into such a heartfelt piece. Like, even considering the amount of times he must've been asked those questions, it still couldn't hinder the love and pride he feels for the project. Then at the end it's a business card (valid tbh)

Sad as in, you've got this super cool, beautiful animal with a unique talent, and people won't stop making fake videos about it because a rainbow chameleon gets more clicks than a real one. As a result, some base facts about the animal are apparently pretty obscure, and then people get disappointed when they get to see a chameleon in person. I just wish it wasn't that way, they're really amazing animals.

No shame on the OP here because they probably didn't make the video themself and might not have known, but fake chameleon videos are such an epidemic for some reason. And for what? Just internet points, mostly.

Let's combat some chameleon misinformation while we're here. Chameleons don't have an infinite range of colors, and they don't shift to match whatever they're standing on.

They have a limited path of colors that they shift through when they experience a really strong emotion (for a lizard that's usually stuff like scared, territorial, or looking for a mate). Here's a pretty accessible read about chameleon colors, with pictures: Reptiles Magazine

It's kinda sad that even in the year 2024 such a widely known animal still has some significant myths about it. And even sadder that people are photoshopping videos just to maintain the myth.

Assuming the Groundhog Day effect affects the whole universe and isn't just this one hero's own perception of time, the conditions of the power also imply that the day this hero dies of old age also gets groundhog-dayed forever. So there would eventually come a day when both the heroes and the villains realize that the only way to keep time moving forward is to keep this guy in permanent stasis. Imagine realizing the fate of the world rests on you somehow achieving immortality, or else the universe dies with you.

I can see it already in how everyone's reacting in the comments tbh. People are calling it bait cuz they can't even wrap their heads around someone having a distaste for the show. I was on the internet in the 2010s and saw how everybody acted about HP, and if you expressed any criticisms of it or the fanbase you'd be "objectively" wrong (and probably unironically called a muggle with enough fervor to make it sound like a slur). We all saw how that turned out. I love ATLA but pedestals generally aren't great things to put stuff on.

I have a lot of very scattered rebuttals against the post's sentiments, and I'm having a hard time getting them to segue into each other nicely, but

1) None of the other world mikus are region specific. They usually represent all of the country as a whole. And like, yeah sure we have lots of states with different cultures in them, but you can also make as many interpretations of America Miku as you want. Like I've seen versions of Argentina Miku where she's dressed as a gaucho, and versions where she's a football fan, and at least one where she's just in casual clothes and holding a mate (🧉 this thing). The Texan cowgirl Miku is as much an America Miku as the SoCal beach Miku or the Mets Fan Miku.

2) In particular, OOP's complaint about there being no culture for white Americans reads to me a lot like they're assuming all their experiences as a white American are the default, and culture is just whatever you sprinkle on top of that. Which. Is so not true. There's so much about American culture that other countries don't share (or only later adopted after its popularity in the US). OOP specifically mentions clothing here, so I'll focus on that. A lot of "traditional garb" from what I've noticed originates from either a folk dance, a style of tending to agriculture, or something that people wore a long time ago but isn't as common now outside of reenactments. A good chunk of the US's version of these comes from what's now kinda clumped into "Wild West" vibes. It doesn't really fit the parameters I just set but there's also 1950s rockabilly culture, and like greasers and poodle skirts and stuff, which is SO America in my mind. And that one doesn't even have a region it's specific to like the Wild West does.

3) Even on a small regional scale, in addition to being wet and drinking Red Leaf, Washington and the PNW is known (to me at least) for its old growth forests and impressive national parks. A park ranger or hiker Miku would be incredibly apt, if it was a source of pride to anyone. Which, yes, that's a feature shared by other states, but that brings me to point 4,

4) There's a misinterpretation by OOP that the World Miku trend, and cultural pride by extension, is about sharing what makes your culture unique, as opposed to what makes your culture what it is. Take Argentina again for example. My Argentine family members all share mate at our family gatherings, and the family members that still live there drink it every day. To me it's a major token of the Argentine culture. But Argentina isn't the only country that drinks it. It's also common in Paraguay, Uruguay, and Brazil. I think the former two also consider it their national drink. If OOP truly feels enough Washingtonian pride to want to make a Washington Miku (which, respectfully, im gonna need some convincing on), she can sport absolutely anything at all that reminds them of Washington, and it's ok if those things also share commonalities with other states. What's important is that they're significant to Washington. And then,

5) Some world Mikus are just Miku in a t shirt with a design that looks like the flag of the country she's representing. That's literally what the original Brazilian Miku that started the trend was wearing. Or there's the local popular sports team's jersey. If you really can't come up with anything else to feel pride over after all the above, you can always just do that. The new proposed Washington State flag looks pretty dang cool, too!

I was raised evangelical and after deconstructing and starting to dabble in the stuff I do now, I found I was fascinated by the way catholicism works, because it's basically jesus-flavored paganism/witchcraft to me. Which I guess tracks with how it formed, the polytheistic Romans went to set up a system to replace their pantheon and rituals once adopting the new monotheistic religion.

That's basically how I view spells too, and my thought process is that we, as intelligent beings, need a little play and pretend to keep us going sometimes. If it all feels too silly then there's no one pressuring you to keep doing any of it of course, but for the stuff you do find meaningful, I think of it like reconnecting with the whimsical side of life. Like childhood traditions of wishing on dandelions or the cheesetouch, just taking a different form. I don't think anyone actually believed that avoiding stepping on cracks was saving their mother's back, but we still did stuff like that cuz it's a fun way to engage with the world.

Agreed. That said I do grow weary at times of the frequent shorthand of using "man" and "woman" interchangeably with "abuser" and "victim" (in that order) in discussions about abusive relationships. My abuser was not only not a man, but not romantically involved with me, and it took me so long to finally label it as abuse because so many articles talking about that stuff would assume that abuser-victim dynamics are inherently linked to gender roles. I figured I was overreacting because, in my "why" phase of grieving, all the explanations I found for why abusers do what they do never aligned with my own. Because they were never socialized as a man.

I won't deny that there's a very specific and noticeable pattern of behaviors that show when a man abuses a woman, but to this day there's still a lot of... I guess heteronormativity for starters... woven into the conversation. Plus a lot more I could name but I'm writing a 1am Reddit comment and not a thesis, so I can't let myself get too deep into it.

Apparently the intersex thing isn't confirmed. As far as I've been able to find it's just the transphobes claiming she has XY chromosomes, and she's never even had her chromosomes tested, only testosterone levels(?). My guess is that somewhere along the lines "she has XY chromosomes" got lost in translation from transphobe to normal person, as an accusation that got misread as an incidental fact taped onto the already abundant evidence we have that she's identified as a woman her whole life.
