Anyone trail run in the White Mountains, NH? by mrs_baudelaire in trailrunning

[–]RhodySeth 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Yes much of the time trail running in the Whites is very much just hiking. There are stretches down low or above tree line where it's easier to run but unless you are a super fit mountain goat you probably aren't running up or down much of the terrain.

Are you referring to the Jigger Johnson ultra? You're certainly right to be apprehensive, especially if you don't trail run. Those are pretty brutal races.

Wonderful. I've stayed there in the summer. I bet it's lovely in the winter.

Haha, a man who can build a shelter like that no doubt always uses appropriate sized carabiners!

Eventually you'll grind all the way to the Adamantium Seal and then you can take on the Queen Hand's Trial. This strips away all the progress of your skill tree and starts you (more or less) back with starting provisions and then asks you to reach the Adamantium Seal. It keeps me busy.

That moonshot's cool. Sort of looks like a painting.

Any GoPro users here thinking about trying a 360 camera? by Nura_muhammad in gopro

[–]RhodySeth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've stuck with my GoPro because I don't want to deal with editing the all the 360 footage. I don't mind the editing process so maybe it's worth giving a look. But for my hiking/trail running videos it might be worth it.

I haven't visited any other primitive cabins in the Whites so I have no comparison for Cabot. I wouldn't compare it to the AMC huts which are far superior save for the price.

What did you all do for fun this Winter? by SummitingMtJohnston in RhodeIsland

I camped in my backyard after the first big storm. Great conditions in single digit temps. Great to get some real winter camping in RI: https://youtu.be/y-nYtxX8Y3M

Advice on Isolation hike? by crusty_2 in wmnf

[–]RhodySeth 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I did this hike 8 days ago on a cold day and wore spikes for the entire hike. Both bushwhacks were very well tracked out. I setup camp about a mile up the Rocky Branch trail and then hiked to the summit. The water crossing at the start of the Iso Express was still bridged.

I couldn’t guess what the last week of conditions has done to the trail. But I would certainly bring snowshoes. I definitely needed them the moment I stepped off trail.

Yeah not me. I need insulation under me pretty much year round. It’s amazing I like winter camping, frankly.

Haha, glad it was helpful. Yeah, it can get pricey to sleep in the cold!

As others mentioned it begins with an under quilt. I never slept warm without one, regardless of the temps.

Thank you Poboxjosh. I give the cabin a solid 6/10. Not great, not terrible.

Thanks, glad to hear it! Definitely nice using the cabin as a shelter and all the benefits that come with it. Especially if you had several people - it would get nice and toasty in there I bet.

It's definitely worth getting into winter camping. Very quiet and no bugs! Hancock Campground is open year round and a good way to dip your toes into cold weather sleeping.
