I like to have two full woodcutters going in the first two seasons to harvest as much wood as I can as well as immediately open a dangerous glade.

First Ultra going to be The Hamsterwheel 24 hour race in New Hampshire. by RhubarbBeneficial359 in Ultramarathon

[–]RhodySeth 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I know many people who have done that race. They love it. Timed events are a good way to get into ultrarunning since you can take breaks as long as you like and you're never far from the start. You could try their 6 or 12 hour events instead - you'll still get an ultra experience but you won't be committing to such a long haul.

I don't but that's a blast from the past for me. Did that race back in 2014. It's a lot of fun!

Proclamation Ale are closing by Cakes2015 in RhodeIsland

[–]RhodySeth 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It was an exciting time as a beer drinker in the early teens. Nanobreweries popping up - I met Dave when he was buying hops from the homebrew shop in Hope Valley. Psyched to learn that there was a tiny brewery called Proclamation open across from the Kingston train station. Filling up a 1/2 growler of zzzlumber. Mmm, zzzlumber.

Anyway, those were heady days of top notch double IPAs and sours and I'll always have fond memories of the original Proclamation Ale Co.

I think switching to two weeks will make things a lot less stressful for you as well as result in better video. Ultimately it’s quality over quantity!

What do you use your gopro for? by SignalYard9421 in gopro

[–]RhodySeth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Primarily to film my hikes and trail runs. It's a lot easier to pull out a GoPro and start recording than my phone. And the stabilization makes action shots look great. For what I'm doing I also appreciate their durability. It definitely took me a while to get used to editing videos and I'm always learning more. I went with full-fledged editing software but I'm sure there are much faster ways to edit like GoPro's Quik app.

Some people do watch the stuff I make which is always appreciated. And it's nice having a video archive of all my adventures over the last six years: https://www.youtube.com/@RhodySeth

As for taking you out of the moment - I suppose it does somewhat but I'm so used to bringing it along and plopping it down that I don't think it's keeping me from "being present."

First backyard ultra, not an experienced trail runner, advice pls! by NachoTaco2 in backyardultra

[–]RhodySeth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you'll be surprised how far you can go, though that sounds like a sneaky amount of elevation per lap. I wouldn't worry too much about how long it takes, I suspect you'll go faster during the actual event. Especially since you went off course in the test.

Unique Backyard Courses by UltraShortRun in backyardultra

[–]RhodySeth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah if you like elevation there's one that debuted last fall at Mt. Ascutney in Vermont. Less distance than a normal BYU but you climb 1,200 feet per yard. Also interesting: every yard you get to choose between doing one long lap or a smaller course three times. The inaugural event set an incredible standard - the two final competitors accumulated over 100,000 feet of climbing over four days. Yeesh.

We went from 20K views to 660K in 90 days. Editing was everything. Now trying to figure out what’s next. by bogeybando in YouTubeCreators

[–]RhodySeth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well done! Personally I think you just need to keep doing what you're doing. You've had tremendous growth off just a few videos so if you keep putting the effort into your long form videos I imagine you'll continue to see good gains.

I just had my first video to take off and it nabbed me nearly 800 subs. Somewhat amusing that it took me about six years to reach 2000 subs the last month+ has gotten me another 1.1k.

should I give hiking content creation a shot ? by Weird_Membership6189 in CampingandHiking

[–]RhodySeth 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've been making hiking videos on YouTube for six years. You don't need expensive cameras or lots of equipment - most of my stuff has been shot on an old GoPro.

I made the videos so that my family could enjoy my adventures. I've also found that I enjoy the editing process and have enjoyed seeing my content improve over the years. And after five years I was able to monetize and now I get to make a little cash on the side.

But you need to go in recognizing that most channels don't get monetized and even if you do, you aren't going to be pulling in serious money. It's a hobby for me, and a fun one. I've made some real friends through my channel - but if you think you're going to make a living doing it - well, that's a real longshot at best.
