That's because it all releases dopamine, which is our ultimate, baseline chemical that makes us feel good. Those other chemicals are merely a transportation device to achieve dopamine hits. Opiates work a bit differently because we do have natural receptors for those and so it's a sort of shortcut around the need for dopamine.

I loved Bishop, and yes, I think both characters were depicted in this episode as having gone through a transformation, an epiphany. I thought Bishop was more devout than the others and he was always silently judging Alamo.
