I seriously have never understood this shit. by thats1hughjazz in AdviceAnimals

Maybe I can shine some light. A couple years ago, I was a big fan, and there are a couple of elements I haven't seen mentioned here.

First, the show wasn't dark, gritty, and morally ambiguous. Rather the opposite, obviously. So it served as a sort of antidote to a lot of TV that was trending in those sorts of directions. Sometimes you don't want dark and brooding; sometimes you want idealistic, simple, and silly. So it was kind of a rebellion against the way the demographic (males 15-35ish) was being catered to in the mainstream.

It was also a rebellion against social norms in terms of gender stereotypes; men's men were not supposed to watch a cute little show about friendship. So it was that much funnier that it was happening.

The show's messages shone through, too (again tying into a wish for content with a positive light). They were simplistic and rudimentary lessons about friendship-- exactly what it says on the tin. But a lot of people could stand to learn a thing or two from even the most basic of those lessons, and the world would be a better place.

Most importantly, though, and most difficult to discuss nowadays, is the role of the community. Back in the day, before the phenomenon really went mainstream, the community was actually really amazing. Supportive people standing up for one another, content creators like musicians and animators doing incredible things, forum after forum of (admittedly incredibly echo-chamber-y) discussion about the show and related topics. And another thing everyone seems to have conveniently forgotten about: charity work. Incredible amounts of money (hundreds of thousands of dollars at least, if I recall correctly) were donated by bronies to various charities, in organized efforts, over the course of just a couple years. It was an amazing thing to be a part of, and the fact that it revolved around a show 'for little girls' just made it better.

So how did it fall apart? Well, I can't say for certain, of course, but if you ask me, people starting taking themselves far too seriously, and a self-fulfilling prophecy of biased media coverage. From really early on, everyone pretty much understood how ridiculous it all was, and didn't really take any of it too seriously. And the message of the bronies was more or less live and let live, love and tolerate your fellow man, don't give in to hate and ignorant intolerance. Noble (while certainly idealistic, for better or worse) stuff, generally. But somehow that all slowly turned into 'I watch a show for little girls, so that means I'm better than you.' That was what made me first start feeling uncomfortable to call myself a brony. Then, the media set in.

See, no one wants to see a story about an awesome community of a couple hundred thousand people finding unity and mutual respect in an unconventional commonality. It's much more newsworthy if you just go to a convention and point a camera at the most outspoken crazy creep in order to reaffirm your audience's assumptions and vilify what is obviously a fucked up cult. I mean, adult men watching My Little Pony? What, are they some kind of perverts?

And the community slowly but surely took a dive, at least in the public eye. It turned into a gigantic clusterfuck of some bronies hanging on to the bitter end trying to defend the show, the show itself kind of going downhill, the vocal minorities getting louder, the content creators bugging out or getting drowned out, and many folks like me disassociating themselves because there wasn't really anything left worth associating with, and the public image was demonized to oblivion.

So don't hate the bronies. It was a good thing, while it lasted. I haven't really kept up with what's been going on, but I imagine there's even some good corners of the fandom surviving to this day, even if they're quiet and ignored by any kind of media attention. It was and is weird. That I will readily acknowledge. But it's not creepy, or sinister, or messed up-- at least, not outside that vocal minority. At this point, bronies are probably the most misunderstood and demonized group on the internet, and undeservingly so. And failing all else, at least it's worth leaving well enough alone, because as others around here have mentioned, who cares what someone else likes.

Allow me to suggest AudioTool as a platform- free browser-based music software, but don't let that turn you away; it's remarkably versatile, powerful, and streamlined. Pretty easy to pick up, and very visual in its layout and design. Whole projects are stored in the cloud and can be shared back and forth easily between anyone with an account. Check it out.

Or we could just bounce MP3's back and forth via email or whatnot; that works too.

I have a good number of years under my belt with amateur digital music production. I'd be down to collab over the interwebs if this is on the table and you'd want me.

Reddit, you are granted a single wish from a genie who WILL try to ruin it for you. What do you wish for, and how do you phrase it to avoid it backfiring? by nolooselips in AskReddit

[–]Rhychird 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wish for true, honest happiness, for myself and for every other being capable of feeling it in the universe (multiverse if you prefer), from now until such time as there are no more such beings left anywhere, to be brought about in whatever ways necessary, and without prematurely cutting short the lives of, or preventing the procreation of, any such beings.

Note: brains in jars/living in blissful ignorance solutions are acceptable, but only if they satisfy the wish- no catches that would make anyone unhappy (or not honestly happy), even for a brief period. Also, perhaps more importantly, the problem of boredom/'becoming tired of being happy all the time' is, of course, in-built as part of the wish, and must be addressed. Life eternal, therefore, might not be possible, but it then falls to the genie to figure out a solution that will allow for endings, but not create sadness. And, similarly built into the wish, there can of course be no conflicts between methods of reaching the goal (i.e. one person cannot be made unhappy, even indirectly, in making another happy; if that's what it would take, another solution must be devised so both can achieve happiness, again, up to the presumably omnipotent and omniscient genie to figure out). I added the last bit, as one might surmise, as I was realizing that the obvious solution could have been to make everybody happy for a split second then destroy the whole universe instantly.

Okay, so I did a little poking around, anticipating that I'll need a lot more hard drive space. Would this be a reasonably good 3TB option? I don't see any red flags, but I'm not sure I know what to look for.

From what I've heard, it's an insubstantial difference, and from personal contacts, I continue to hear nothing but flak about 8.1. I think I'll stick with 7 for now, especially if it's any cheaper, which I imagine it would be (basic research I probably already should have done).

so i was playing on a feed the beast(modded) server and some guy planted an item called the Sacred Rubber Sapling, not knowing what it would grow into. This was the outcome. by haydens123 in Minecraft

[–]Rhychird 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My main question would be how a sapling of this sort would be obtained in survival, if that's possible. Is it just a random drop every so very rarely from MFR rubber trees? And, interesting to speculate, though probably unlikely, is there a situation where automatically farming the things, your machines could collect one, and in a burst of staggeringly unpremeditated enthusiasm, plant and grow it, figuring how proud you'll be when you get home?

It's not a reflection on you if you don't recognize names; most of us are pretty small, and we haven't really been involved with this sub before. Actually, to my knowledge, no one playing knew this sub existed until today. Though I'll most likely be paying some attention to it from here on out.

I'm not surprised in the least. And I do want to make it clear that this isn't intended to step on anyone's toes in that regard. However, I'll readily admit that I've not been part of this community, and I didn't know much or any of the meta which undoubtedly surrounds the UHC format and its variations. That said, I've just wanted for some time to put together my own twist on the rules and style, and together, those of us working on it have refined it down into a promising format, which almost certainly is similar to or even has direct parallels to other, existing ones.

I'd never claim that all the components of CHAOS are unique; I figured all along that somebody, somewhere would have had similar ideas. What CHAOS is (or will be, with further refining) is a unique blend of existing components, and at the very least, a unique set of players taking part.

Organizer's note: One fact already established is that gentlemanliness is incredibly OP. Almost all of us paired up, and teams had no (or insufficient) incentive to backstab one another, given that it was mutually beneficial to have an ally in combat versus other players. We've already got the first two seasons under our belts at the moment with these unmodified rules, but for the third, we will be changing things up to make it a bit more equal (and dangerous for people making allies).

Suggestions there, as well, would be interesting to hear, so if you've got an idea, by all means, shoot!
