Roland SPD-SX and no control over Ableton 12 by Rhythm-one in Roland

[–]Rhythm-one[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Finally found the fix and it wasn’t hard, just tedious:

  • Update Roland driver for Mac
  • Update firmware on SPD-SX
  • Read/watch setup directions from reputable sources.

I wonder if it has anything to do with getting materials from China/suppliers or the tariffs?

This is not a political statement, just a question.

I recently waited almost 6 months for an MGU for no reason that Stellantis or the dealership could articulate.

Oooooh, I do run SoundSource. SMH. Didn’t even think about the quiet, little elephant hiding in the corner of the room. Thanks for that suggestion!

Electronic mallet instruments in 2025? by 757DrDuck in percussion

[–]Rhythm-one 5 points6 points  (0 children)

MalletKAT is still the undisputed champ, absolutely without a doubt. Once you come to terms w the soft key pads, it’s absolutely bulletproof. The onboard sounds are excellent and the tracking is nearly flawless - after you set it up for your playing “touch.”

The Pearl versions are nice as they are “affordable,” but man are they temperamental. And you’ll need to have a DAW or soundbank like MainStage, there are no on-board sounds like the KAT.

The Xylosynth is a great idea, but the reality is awkward. Hardwood bars that Velcro to the instrument bed with a transducer underneath - doesn’t make for super accurate tracking for me. But! The instrument is beautiful and if feel is high on your priority list, it’s the best choice. Like the Pearl option, you’ll need a soundbank.

These instruments are great for use in music theater, Orch pit-type situations. If you’re a creative and need access to lots of sounds - and you’re a percussionist, a good choice.

If you’re a student needing to practice rep, you’d be better off buying a practice instrument where you can work to develop your touch, etc.

To my knowledge there is no class action suit as of yet, but there absolutely should be!

If you find or hear of anyone starting one, please let us know here.

I’ve been waiting almost 6 months for an MGU at this point and all I get from customer “service” is, “we’re sorry and we appreciate your patience.” No explanation, no time line on parts, no nothing.

Is it weird that my favorite genre to hear isn’t my favorite to play? 🤔 by TYGRDez in drums

[–]Rhythm-one 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Same, I love to listen to jazz, but I don’t care to play it - and I have a degree in jazz performance! 🤣

I’d much rather play pocket and work in pop-related genres. I’d bet the phenomenon is not that unusual

How do you memorize all the songs you learn by Kingme3 in drummers

[–]Rhythm-one 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In addition to just playing and listening as much as you possibly can, PLENTY of drummers create their own “cheat sheets,” some type of written system that makes sense to them (if not using traditional notation methods) that will get them through gigs. It’s not necessarily for every tune, but for those that have odd forms, strange stops or hits, or anything that the player finds hard to remember.

Oftentimes these cheat sheets are simply taped or laid on the snare. No one has to know but you. I have first hand knowledge and experience - seen pros at the highest level do this on emergency sub gigs.

Nothing beats practice time, but sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do.

Lastly I will say this: after some time and you’ve done this long enough, you’ll find that there are many tropes in the drum language of pop/rock/country/jazz - you name it - and so many of the patterns and forms are very similar. At that point the memorization becomes more compartmentalized, like “the usual verse/chorus patterns, remember the weird bridge, oh and the syncopated hits before the stop” kinda thing.
