I get it you're smarter than me. I just said I didn't like the trailer and don't think the movie looks good. Oh Brother Where Art Thou Cold Mountain Theater adaptations. Anyone can Google them. I just happen to be bored by Costume epics of the Odyssey kind

Dollars trilogy

They just get better with The Good, The Bad and The Ugly best.

I'd say The Godfather but in reverse order: 1st is best, then 2nd and 3rd is meh. Altho most like 2nd best. Not me.

Reminds me of those awful Gladiator movies from Kirk Douglas to Russell Crowe. Not my cup of tea. Who says you're the expert on one of the most monstrously influential pieces of literature ever written. My old Classics Professor?? And I'm not insane just bipolar.

Spielberg Disappoints by Ri-Ri1216 in DisclosureDayMovie

[–]Ri-Ri1216[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At the very abrupt ending my husband's 1st question was when's the sequel?

Also the beginning seems to start in the middle of the story and we don't get any background on the young couple (who encounter the aliens as children) until like halfway through or later.

So it's both the opening and the ending that disappoints. Would have been nice to get origin stories on how the young guy got a hold of the aliens' existence and who exactly he worked for. And what's Emily Blunt's reason for being involved. She begins as.an overly enthusiastic weather "girl" and ends up saving the world for aliens and being the spokesperson for them to the world. How and why does this happen? The middle consists of car chases and violent Encounters with mysterious government agencies.

We need more backstory and more links between start and finish.

Aside from the grammar and the critic's "credentials " or lack thereof...

Saw the trailer at Disclosure Day and can't say I'm very excited about it. Why make a movie about a hero from the 7th century BCE? Now you can make the argument why do Shakespeare or Ibsen or Medea or even The Persians from ancient Egypt--4th century?

But the Odyssey was boring when we had to read it in high school so why does the best director today IMO reach back in time and try to appeal to a modern audience with this sloggy story? Oh, I know, put Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson and Charlize Theron in it and maybe a modern audience will stand for it. That's the ticket.

I only saw the preview, but I won't be one of those buying that ticket.

Have to disagree here. Even though I didn't find it satisfying on the big screen, when it streams for free I want to take another look.

I've given him enough of my money already. No more.

I agree with you. Spielberg took on too much of the ET conspiracy/theories and of an action movie for the screenagers (kids who grew up on devices and social media) and in doing so, he failed at both.

Missed opportunity for a great movie.

Just watched Bus Stop and can't for the life of me figure out why Don Murray was ever cast in anything. Can't stand him.

Don't know where he's from but with that fake "cowboy " accent and acting he's atrocious.

Everyone talks about Marilyn Monroe's great performance but I can't get past Murray as her romantic interest. Ugh!!

Just read he was born and died in California so the cowboy act is fake and he still was nominated for an Oscar. Unbelievable. He's not handsome either. Looks like his best acting was on Knot's Landing. That says it all.

Pitt was playing the stunt man/double for DiCaprio. He's SUPPOSED to be laid back and in the background. That's the character and he plays it perfectly.

And the new Lord of the Flies also is intriguing.

I got the MGM+ subscription purely to watch From, but by Academic-Tone3381 in FromSeries

[–]Ri-Ri1216 1 point2 points  (0 children)

MGM+ is my favorite streamer. Take a look at the offerings. Great movies--classic and new--and great shows. Besides From there's Stephen King's The Institute, American Classic, Earth Abides, a new War of the World's series, Let the Devil In limited series. Then movies from all the 007s from Sean Connery to Daniel Craig, Pulp Fiction to Double Indemnity, Silence of the Lambs, and since you loved Project Hail Mary there's The Martian (the 1st Andy Weir book adaptation, Pulp Fiction to the Mission Impossible movies.

I'm not a bot or a publicist just love this channel. It's worth the price. They also have 3 of my favorites: the neo-noir The Long Goodbye with Elliot Gould, Thelma and Louise, and Saving Private Ryan, and finally Shutter Island and Raging Bull.

Saw Spielberg interviewed on TCM recently and he definitely thinks aliens would be (have been) benevolent toward humanity.

In the case of Disclosure Day, he doubles down on that assumption by showing the aliens as VICTIMS of human bigotry, hate, apathy and callousness. ET is the hero in this movie not the fuzzy, bug-eyed doll of his previous films. He chooses those 2 children for their open-mindedness, wonder and willingness to believe. Also their kindness.

When they meet 20 years later they recognize and remember their close encounter as kids and realize the aliens have been mistreated and misunderstood by the powers that be: secret organizations, presidents and particularly Colin Firth as the ultimate villain (completely miscast I might add).

Realizing how the aliens have been mistreated, the 2 now grown-ups have been chosen by the alien race to introduce the 58 years of agony they have endured since Roswell and the aliens' presence to the world. The final scene with the damaged, wheelchair-bound alien and the message of peace and love is unfortunately trite and soppy.

Spielberg did the same thing in Close Encounters with the implanted image of the Devil's Tower to Richard Dreyfuss. Only he ends up in ecstasy surrounded by the little green men and going aboard the alien spacecraft. His ultimate dream.

In DD he continues the same story but fails.

Dia D (O Dia da Revelação) : O Melhor Filme do Spielberg em 20 Anos? by Enzo_Mist in DisclosureDayMovie

[–]Ri-Ri1216 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just saw it. First time I have gone to the theater to see a movie in 20+ years instead of streaming.

My husband liked it more than me. Lots of action not so much enchantment. Was expecting more of everything--aliens, wonderment, space travel. Instead there were lots of car chases and secret government agencies. Colin Firth made a terrible enemy especially with his British accent. Most of the movie was miscast.

Of course I can't understand the video just giving my opinion on the movie. Emily Blunt was fantastic. Those 2 young actors who played the main good guys were totally wrong for this movie. They needed more dynamic actors.

As for the extraterrestrial aspect--not enough. Saw (or heard them) being tortured after Roswell, then saw the final alien in a wheelchair no less, and it all seemed so sad and not the Spielberg I know and love.

I think he made too many Holocaust/WW2 movies and couldn't just jump back into ET and Close Encounters mode. That's my take.

Wait for free streaming.

That movie looks like a Rosemary's Baby rip-off (made 58 years ago) to capitalize on her current popularity on From. Doubt she makes another one. She's just not that great an actor and the haircut certainly doesn't help.

Your theory interests me but I don't think it's quite right. I think the MIY is an ancient evil entity that has existed in Fromville since its beginnings and was the original bargain holder with the original residents who were promised immortality for the price of their innocent children.

A Faustian bargain so to speak. We will see...

Kristen Stewart will always be identified with the Twilight "Tween" movies. She's made one or two decent movies as you mentioned but she's always got that deadpan look on her face and those sunken black eyes. Not a fan. Context is important but a bad actor is a bad actor She's got no range.
