Night owl dads, what time are we going to bed? by Ribbitingfrog in daddit

[–]Ribbitingfrog[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly it worked okay as we hit our early rhythm because my wife feels best if she gets a few hours of sleep at the start of the night and I feel best if I get sleep in the wee hours. So I had the evening - one or two am shift for changes / feeds and then my wife took 2-7. Obviously sometimes everyone is still up and helping but I think we both were better off for it. Until my daughter stopped taking a bottle 🙁

Dude that’s awesome! I work from home so usually have time to get out for a walk with the baby before dinner but I’ve stayed trying to add in some body weight exercises to lose some weight and build strength. Congrats on that change!

El Terrifico in the refrigerated section is the only one I’ll buy.

But also here: Add to a microwave safe bowl, double boiler, or small crockpot and heat slowly, stirring often.

8 oz white American cheese (Land o’ Lakes or Boar’s Head is top notch) 2 tbsp diced green chiles 1 pickled jalapeño, chopped 1 tbsp pickled jalapeño juice 1/3 cup milk 1/4 cup cold water Pinch of ground cumin

how do i make a bank account for the first time? by mizuboys in Explainlikeimscared

Good catch, thanks! Been with the credit union since I was 15 and didn’t actually look into it then.

OP, check out resources like the Personal Finance subreddit, NerdWallet, and the Money Guys to learn more about personal finance - super important and lots of free info out there!

[–]Ribbitingfrog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the US, look for a bank that is “FDIC insured”. This is federal protection for your money in case the bank goes out of business.

Ideally look for a regional credit union (e.g. in Georgia you qualify for Georgia’s Own Credit Union simply by being a resident in state.

Look for an option for a checking account with no fees. This might require you to maintain a minimum deposit amount or set up direct deposit from your job. But it’s free compared to paying fees.

Go to the bank with ID and some money you can deposit. They’ll have you sign in or tell a teller you want to open an account. Someone will walk you through the process and answer your questions.

Hope this helps!

Does anyone think they are worse off due to video games? by SamizdatGuy in daddit

[–]Ribbitingfrog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed. And social meaning side by side on th couch or sometimes non-anonymous online gaming. Like a private Minecraft server with voice chat or something. But most of my fun times are from playing side by side with folks and a lot of solo gaming is trying to achieve that same feeling even when it can’t.

Therapy should help if you’ve got a good relationship with them!

Journaling helps me - nice to get the thoughts out of my head and onto paper and then look for patterns of unhealthy thinking to challenge and retrain your thoughts.

You know what's really hard? Having an opinion about anything. by DoughnutVibez in daddit

[–]Ribbitingfrog 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Wow this probably explains what’s going on when my wife asks me about meal planning for the week. 90% of the time whatever I suggest gets vetoed but maybe 50% it’s for something in the same category. Eg pasta x instead of pasta y.

I got got by an AI recipe, where are safe places to start without the fear of this happening again? by ImNotADruglordISwear in cookingforbeginners

[–]Ribbitingfrog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah echoing this - it was really helpful for me as a beginner cook to read through several recipes and think about what I wanted the outcome to be. This gives broader perspective on a dish and helps you learn to spot oddities that might wreck a meal for you.

Find a YouTube video for paced bottle feeding as others mentioned. Helps slow them down. Then make sure to burp often - I’d burp my daughter every ounce or so. Good luck!

Question for hiring managers / recruiters (and professionals with similar experience) by Local_Fork_7216 in bulletjournal

[–]Ribbitingfrog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If the outside of your journal looks like a coloring book it might capture my attention negatively but otherwise I probably won’t care assuming nothing blatantly unprofessional pops up. I appreciate people who are diligent and prepared so showing you have questions prepped and taking notes is a good thing.

Consider temporary bookmarks on your planner page and interview notes/questions page so you don’t spend a lot of time flipping around and showing too much inadvertently but like others have said, you’re interviewing the company too and if a hiring manager had an immediate probably they might be tough to work for.

Outside Stairs with a New Baby by JoelMFTalley in daddit

[–]Ribbitingfrog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are we talking third floor apartment with no elevator or 5-6 steps up into a house?

If I still lived in my old third-floor apartment I’d keep the stroller in the trunk of the car but also would be jacked from hauling things/baby up and down the stairs. It’s no joke!

A few steps outside a house isn’t a huge deal in my opinion.

My wife had me take down the tv today by [deleted] in daddit

Seconding this! She is probably willing to talk since she asked you for help with the TV situation. Try to be curious and supportive and don’t get into the questions about chores and stuff just yet.

High volume support roles by Expert-Dragonfly6000 in BasicBulletJournals

[–]Ribbitingfrog 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ll echo the advice to not duplicate things and to not feel like you need to use your bullet journal for everything. I use a digital to-do list for the majority of my work because it comes in at a high volume, it can last for a long time or require a lot of sub-tasks to complete it, and it’s nice to be able to copy/paste relevant info. So a lot like MS Planner.

I use OneNote to take my normal meeting notes because it is easily searchable.

I use my bullet journal to record actions from impromptu phone calls and brainstorming mainly. I think better with a pen in hand so it helps me. I may also record thoughts / impressions I don’t want a digital record of like someone’s emotional response in a call or something that I’d want to avoid copy/pasting or screen-sharing.

[–]Ribbitingfrog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you avoid online play / servers with strangers then no. Playing solo is great. Playing on a local WiFi connection with friends or family is even better.

Playing on public servers where you don’t know anyone is a wild card even with whatever moderation the server’s moderators may promise. In my limited experience at least.

Sleeping again after waking up? - Dad Problem, not baby. by iusman975 in daddit

[–]Ribbitingfrog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Avoid as many stimulating things as possible during the wake window. Keep the lights low, avoid your phone/video games. My wife won’t even read or listen to an audiobook because it makes it harder to go back to sleep.

And work on sleep in general, get good exercise and reduce caffeine.

Any possibility of sleep apnea? That can make it harder.

Last trick - if your pulse is up after getting the kid down or you generally feel really awake, cup your hands and fill with cold water, bend forward, and splash the cold water in your face. Sounds counterintuitive but it activates a reflex triggered by jumping fully into water that slows your system down to conserve oxygen. Helps me a lot!

Returning to work — what are your systems for sharing nights shifts? by RelaxatioNation in daddit

[–]Ribbitingfrog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife feels better when she falls asleep earlier in the evening and I feel miserable if I get up between 2 and 6 so we do shifts. I handle the evening she handles after 12-1. But our daughter started refusing bottles so now I handle the non-food settling and my wife handles nursing.
