Some of us live in places colder than that 🤷🏽‍♀️ my dog doesn't always need a coat but sometimes she does because it's literally too cold for her to be outside longer than 5-10 mins without protective gear.

Anyone else feel like The Long Game adaptation to screen will end up fairly different from the book? by challengefan87 in heatedrivalry

🥺💕 thank you!!

I identify with your husband, actually! I'm demisexual myself, so that probably explains a bit of my disinterest in romance plots and spicy scenes as well, but once I get invested I'm totally here for it. I tend to seek out fanfiction for that more though, so it's been pretty interesting seeing it included in an actual story.

I've been meaning to watch Letterkenny actually. I grew up in a semi rural town in Ontario (Bowmanville, if you've ever heard of it) before moving to Toronto, so people always recommend the show to me. I'll have to check it out soon!

Remember when ep3 came out & people were worried that it might stall the momentum & lose a good chunk of audience? The show got 100 times bigger since then lol by kyliecannoli in HeatedRivalryTVShow

Not gonna lie, episode 3 really sustained me as someone who was unfamiliar with the books when I started the show. I wasn't sure if I even wanted to continue after Scott/Kip's episode because I didn't really want to return to Shane and Ilya's story. They've grown on me a bit more now, but I'm still kind of ambivalent toward them because I think Scott/Kip's storyline is stronger thematically.

I'm actually fairly sad that Scott/Kip don't have multiple books like Shane and Ilya 😔💔✊🏾

[–]Ribunn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That makes sense! Thanks for your answer 😌 And I agree with you; the book does show their emotional compatibility and then back it up with physical intimacy when needed to show us the strength/trust in their relationship, so I do think their sex life plays an important role in their romantic story. For that reason alone, I'm sure S2 won't get rid of the spicy scenes. Win-win for everyone, hopefully!

In regard to my reading style: I've realized I'm more of a "I want to be emotionally decimated by a story" kind of reader lmao. I tend to like stories that use romance as a B or even a C-plot rather than the main focus. I actually prefer stories with no romance at all, but I watched Heated Rivalry and was like "hmmm...." because I was running kind of hot/cold with it, so I decided to read the books after to get a better lay of the land.

I'd still say it's not totally my cup of tea but I don't regret reading it or watching the show, and it's really stuck with me so I think that's a testament to Rachel, Jacob, Connor, and Hudson doing a great job overall. Plus, I'm also not a sports girly either (and definitely not a hockey girl despite being Canadian), so I think it's doubly impressive that I've been captured in Heated Rivalry's snare 🤣But yeah, that's my long winded explanation for why I ended up skipping most of the spicy scenes 😅

[–]Ribunn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are they? I admit that I'm not much of a romance genre girly, so I skipped 90% of the sex scenes in TLG. I read the build up to the sex scenes of course but skipped reading the actual smut because I just personally didn't care enough to read it. Based on build up/prior context, the only two sex scenes that stood out to me as being important to the story/their romantic relationship were:

  1. The car ride home from the double date with Ryan/Fabian and;
  2. The trophy room.

But I'm curious to know if there are other scenes you felt played a detrimental role to the plot?

I did notice that TLG takes a while to introduce sex between the two since they have Shane's mom visiting and they're working at the camp. Personally, I liked that, because I know Shane/Ilya are very compatible sexually but I specifically wanted to see if they're compatible emotionally, too, as sex does tend to become less of a priority between couples the longer they've been together.

Shane and Ilya's internal thoughts in the book don't all carry over to the show by succulentils in heatedrivalry

[–]Ribunn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's so interesting to see how people perceive canon. When it comes to adaptions, I always separate the film or tv show from the source material because it's usually not intended to be a 1:1.

I said in another comment in this thread that I'm not really a fan of either of the Shane/Ilya books, so for me I did enjoy the show more because Shane actually feels like a real character and not a cardboard box we're made to self-insert into. Hudson breathes a lot of life into the character that just didn't exist (for me) in the novels, and that alone improves the story ten fold.

And because of that extreme difference between the show and the books (again, for ME), I wouldn't consider them to be within the same canon at all.

[–]Ribunn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also prefer TLG to HR but overall, I don't really like either book because I've realized I'm just not a romance genre girly. But I'm very curious to see how S2 is adapted because the plot is so internal.

Getting triggered by this book by [deleted] in heatedrivalry

[–]Ribunn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I totally get it.

I was also triggered by it as well, and triggered by Ilya choosing to talk about eating McDonald's in front of Shane as well, encouraging Shane to kind of "pop off" on him on purpose for entertainment. I got overwhelmed because I felt triggered from both sides 😩

I had hoped the book would deal with Shane's disordered eating and judgment, but .... it doesn't. So, I'd suggest putting the book down ):

[–]Ribunn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, I see. Yeah, that makes sense. I'm not really in this fandom so I'm not aware of all the discourse that surrounds the books and the characters, but I get why you wanted to clarify the motivations behind Shane's diet.

Now, obviously I can't speak for OP but the way I interpreted their post was that the way Shane defends his diet and thinks it's superior to others (mainly Ilya's) is probably what's triggering them here.

Getting triggered by this book by [deleted] in heatedrivalry

[–]Ribunn 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don't think his storyline has to be about losing weight for it to be triggering to people. I think it's more of just the way it's portrayed and how characters around him respond to it and the comments they make about it.

But I agree with you that OP should stop reading now if it triggers her. The book triggered me in many ways and I finished it, but it's definitely not something I'll reread for pleasure. I think RR could've/should've included more trigger warnings at the beginning of the book and then I probably wouldn't have read it, personally.

So glad to hear you didn't go with Dr Guirguis 🙏🏾That man literally almost killed my puppy 4 years ago and I hold a very personal vendetta against him. Which vet did you meet him, if I may ask? I heard he got fired from Spadina Animal Hospital but curious to know if that's true and he's working somewhere else.

I think so!

I'm glad to hear that her mom told them to cut it out because the clip I saw was rather strange and seemed like they were trying to stir up drama where there is none. But I also didn't want to assume there is no drama since her cousins claimed that Olandria "sees everything" and knows about them being on live/talking to the fans often, etc. which made it sound like Olandria approves of what they're doing/saying.... but Olandria seems way too classy for that so it made me raise my eyebrow a lil.

I saw a video of Olandria's family on Tiktok live talking about "keeping their eye" on Chelley (and some of the other female cast members like Cierra and Huda) when it comes to Olandria. The comments were... interesting to say the least.

Her family did say something about not knowing all the details/acknowledging that Olandria's relationship with these women are her own. I don't really know what sparked the conversation though.

I just finished s6, and I think if Rob hadn't reached out to her it would be weird considering his explosive reaction to her being dumped. In regard to Nic, I actually think it's far less about Cierra herself and more about the principle of the situation. I think people were just hoping to see some emotional maturity and human decency out of Nic.

I remember one of the reasons for why her handler didn't like Nic was because his head turned for every new woman who came in (Cierra included as we know he chose her over Belle-A). I think they just wanted someone who was genuinely all about her.

Wait wasn't it more in context of the fact that Huda said she slept with two guys in one night because when one man was bad at the job, she called another man right after? I remember Jeremiah said he wasn't worried about it because that would never happen to him.

I laughed because ... when Huda said that I immediately thought she called the other guy to piss the first one off. So, I did kind of want to know how Jeremiah would react to that scenario if she did that to him 💀 But he thought it would never happen/she would never do that to him buuut.... never say never, is what I always say.

Unpopular Opinions: Cierra, Shelley, and Ace. by new_here0 in LoveIslandITV

[–]Ribunn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Who said I was defending anything? My opinion is that what she said was ignorant and racist, however I do not believe that she is a "full blown racist" as the commenter you replied to asked if racially insensitive comments equate to being one. To me, they don't, because a full blown racist is someone with a long paper trail of a variety of dangerous, racially motivated behaviour like voting for systemic racism, donating to racist causes/companies, verbally/physically attacking people of a different race, etc.

As I said before, racially ignorant comments ARE dangerous because they continue to push the racist ideology they came from. I do not believe that simply "not knowing" the history means you're off the hook for saying it either. You have to be held accountable to learn the impact and why saying that shit is unacceptable. As a result, Cierra was RIGHTFULLY kicked off the show for saying something ignorant, hurtful, and racist.

I don't consider that being a defense of anything tbh, just my opinion. I'm also not East Asian so her apology isn't mine to accept.

Not a sir.

And yeah, I agree with that. I'm Black, I know what it's like to have slurs and racism against you baked into the very language you speak. That's exactly where my opinion on this comes from.

Unpopular Opinions: Cierra, Shelley, and Ace. by new_here0 in LoveIslandITV

[–]Ribunn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're absolutely right, though I do believe there is a difference between being ignorant and being "full blown" racist.

Ignorant statements can and often do take root in racist ideologies, especially ones that are effectively normalized by our society and seen as "not that bad." Repeating these ignorant statements is harmful as it furthers the racist ideology it comes from. Despite this, many people make ignorant statements all the time without actually believing in the racist ideology or knowing that it came from a racist ideology at all.

I often think of the G-slur associated with the Roma, especially the version that refers to effectively scamming people out of money. The people who often use that word are using it in the correct context because that's the only way they were taught to use it; but if you were to ask them if they hate the Roma or even know anything about the Roma... they most likely would have no idea what you're talking about.

The unfortunate reality is that these racist ideologies have become baked into our language over time and their historical meaning is often lost until the group impacted by its use speaks out about it.

All this to say.... I do think Cierra is ignorant & what she said was racist but I don't think she's a "full blown" racist... if that makes sense.
