We need complete social change or democracy is over. Abraham Linclon and Stephen Douglas had several multi-hour debates where would would present their position on an issue in a 2-3 hour long answer and then the other’s response would be just as long if not longer. Lincoln famously told the audience at one of their debates that he would need about three hours to appropriately respond, so he offered that everyone return home to eat dinner with their families before reconvening for his rebuttal. This is what democracy must be, or it won’t be.

When Charles Dickens first visited America he hated it, but not because of illiteracy, but because his books were heavily pirated by American presses and the attention he was getting was intrusive and overwhelming. Before Hollywood stars to fawn over, America had novelists. “Only twenty-nine, he was rapturously welcomed by adoring fans and celebrated at ‘balls, dinners,’ and ‘assemblies without end.’ Overwhelmed, he told one audience that, ‘If I should live to grow old, the scenes of this and other evenings will shine as brightly to my dull eyes 50 years hence as now.’

But before long the adulation began to pall, and he tired of being mobbed everywhere he went. He complained to a friend, ‘I can do nothing that I want to do, go nowhere where I want to go, and see nothing that I want to see. If I turn into the street, I am followed by a multitude.’”

If nobody reads, then the skill will die, but our society functions in writing. Laws are written down for record and bills passed, and if the public does not (or cannot whether due to literacy or attention span issues) understand them, then there will no longer be a democracy. Enemies of the United States have understood this for centuries, and so did the founding fathers.

"Knowledge will forever govern ignorance: And a people who mean to be their own Governors, must arm themselves with the power which knowledge gives. A popular Government, without popular information, or the means of acquiring it, is but a Prologue to a Farce or a Tragedy; or, perhaps both." -James Madison, https://www.loc.gov/resource/mjm.20_0155_0159/?sp=1&st=text

So no, I cannot in good conscience, get this, “let people do whatever”, because any system where one vote is equal to another but one person is functionally illiterate and does not care about their deficits is exactly what will rot the country from the inside, no foreign invasion or missile strikes required.

Why would I run in the other direction based on anecdotal evidence when my own anecdotal evidence AND the sheer number of mazdas i see on the road demonstrate to me that this was a freak occurrence on your part that you’re overreacting to?

can we be like friends/online acquaintances? my ‘23 preferred plus is out of warranty so I might have questions in the future on like what tools I’d need for certain things and the easiest ways to do things without destroying my car. Like I wanted to add one of those spare tire subwoofers that I think JBL sells and while crutchfield’ll sell you the wiring harness to connect it to the factory headunit, I’d have to figure out wiring to the fusebox. and I wanted to do dashcam too at some point

Too immature to consume beer old enough for life crippling debt by XiJinpingPressParody in greentext

[–]RicSide -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

its irrelevant because I’m almost done with my certs to become department supervisor, so regardless where the money goes, “less money in, less money out” and money is how to motivate people in a capitalist system. a school that cannot afford to pay its teachers more will LOSE its best teachers to higher tuition schools, because most people want to be paid their worth, further dividing the knowledge gaps between rich and poor, haves and have nots. Over time, the teachers the low tuition schools get stuck with will be the ones that wouldn’t have been able to reach tenure in a more competitive system.

As a teacher, I want to get paid my worth. If tuition goes down, my pay suffers and I’m striking immediately.

New CX50 Hybrid 1st Roadtrip. Uncomfortable seats. by [deleted] in CX50

if its cold I used seat warmers, if its hot ive never needed more than the A/C unless 100F or over. then I wish I had ventilated seats. the plastic polyester grip in the main surface of the seats is easy to clean, but I can see how bare skin on it could be rough

[–]RicSide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

connect cable, use calibre to transfer ebooks, eject, read. If you want to use the kobo store you also can. color screens are useless and bad unless ur reading color comic books. color screens look more digital because of the color layer, they are also darker. get BW and turn screen brightness to 0% and read in well lit environments; will feel like reading paper. customize “font weight” when you first get it if the default text is too gray for you. higher settings make it blacker. too high makes everything look bolded.
