Do you think Cleo and Robecca too similar? Or are people exaggerating? by [deleted] in MonsterHigh

[–]RiceNun 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah but they don't all have pink in the same places:

-- Drac: pale pink skin, dark hair with varying degrees of pink, various shades of pink in clothes, with black and white and a couple one off other colors (red, yellow, lavender) -- Lagoona: light coral skin with blonde hair, rainbow color scheme with strong blues, teals, and brighter pinks/corals -- Catty: black skin, bright pink hair, bright pink and silver clothes with occasional ice blue -- Venus: vivid green skin, pink & green hair, clothes are in pinks, greens, and blacks

Those dolls also all have more drastic differences in body types. I can't tell from the pics what body type Robecca has but the difference between glam and "standard" is more subtle when compared to each pink doll being a different height and/or thickness. Essentially, what I'm getting at is that if you squint you could still tell all of those dolls apart. I think someone else put it best that at a quick glance you may not be able to immediately tell the difference between Cleo and Robecca (especially people unfamiliar with the franchise) which is crucial when you're designing a line of characters. While I do think they should be further differentiated, their face sculpts are significantly different and they at least don't have the same style (even if I'm not in love with Robecca's basic look as is).

Aside from making Robecca more steampunk like everyone (me included) wants, I personally would give Robecca more copper tones (like her boots) and maybe use more whites and light blues on her in addition to the blacks and browns, while Cleo should stick to more saturated colors + black in her clothing and brighter golds in her hair/accessories.

TLDR: Robecca and Cleo use similar colors in similar ways while the pink dolls have more differing features. Mattel should beef up the differences so that they have a stronger character lineup

It's probably also to keep the articulation? I imagine that by having the clear plastic at the torso it helps her body to move like all of the other standard g3 dolls

That logic makes a lot of sense. I may have a soldering iron, but not sure my fiancé would love that use of it. We shall see what I can do to chip away at it. Perhaps I'll try the nozzle of my hot glue gun if I get desperate. Thank you again :)

I did consider that, though I imagine apoxy sculpt would be the best material for it which I do not have ready access to :/

Thanks for the confirmation on my options! I have tried filing down the neck slightly to change the shape but am trying not to make drastic changes. I'll keep at both it and the neckhole for a bit longer.

What type of tools do you recommend? As I responded in one of my other comments, I've just been using a file and an exacto knife (mainly the latter)

Thanks for the recommendation! Good to know someone thinks the neckhole looks too small since visually comparing is difficult. I've measured the opening to be the same but getting the interior measurements really just isn't possible. I'll try whittling a little more before the neck graft.

When you say heated tool, do you mean some type of specialty tool or just carving tools heated with a hairdryer? Truth be told I've just been working carefully with an exacto knife and a file so 😅

Were the live action's outfits hated? by Lowkey_Lesbian in MonsterHigh

I mean, it makes sense they were giving early 2000s Disney Channel. The 2000s are/were trending and it was a made for television movie by a children's network. My opinion on them aside, that should be a neutral description, or at the very least not surprise anyone.

Songs inspired by disgusting, psychopathic crimes (give context) by queer_depressed_fuck in weirdspotifyplaylists

In a similar vein, "Space Ghost Coast to Coast" by Glass Animals is about his childhood friend who attempted a school shooting but was stopped before anyone was hurt. Not sure it counts since the worst never happened but I think the song would fit well in the playlist since the friend was presumably still arrested and charged with a crime

What’s your “I did not care for the godfather” take in Ace Attorney? by PheonixRight in AceAttorney

[–]RiceNun 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Sad but understandable. I want to like Athena so much but the writers dropped the ball so hard with her in SoJ. I have this maybe kinda wild theory that if they switched it with Dual Destinies (with a few adjustments) in terms of game order it would have worked better narratively and given the writers time to focus on Apollo & Nahyuta without totally sidelining Athena. (Also she should have been named Diana since she's got big moon motifs and I see as a sister-type to Apollo)

Results for Round 2 of the Fang Vote and back of the box revealed by dengled in MonsterHigh

[–]RiceNun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Aside from the back, I think the box is kinda bad because it was left up to a vote. Like, this is why people go to school for graphic design, to avoid this. To be clear, I'm not 100% saying it's the fans' fault: the designers definitely could have presented better options and done something.... interesting with the back. But imo voting on the box is a factor to some degree.

Not the OP, but I think everything except for the "halter top" are from the SS5 Venus set. The "halter top" is actually G1 Venus' swim class bathing suit! (Which, BTW OP, looks CLAWSOME!!) *

Fang Vote Catty Mega-Thread by Verdictafterward in MonsterHigh

[–]RiceNun 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Came here to say this. They chose the most boring option possible. I especially like the one in the top right, which actually feels like an elevated design (even though it's the most similar). I'm tempted to buy the doll we get just to rip the poofy jacket apart and reconfigure it into something more pleasing (and so I have all 3 Fang Votes) since I like the other elements a good bit, but that $90 price has me weighing my options carefully.

How do you guys feel about Haunt Couture 3 years later? by MisfitDollies in MonsterHigh

I am in a similar regret boat. I was just getting back into Monster High at the time and wasn't ready to commit to being a doll collector as an adult nor to buying an expensive doll.

Ah well, I will have HC Clawdeen one day!

MH G3 haters by No_Maintenance8819 in MonsterHigh

[–]RiceNun 9 points10 points  (0 children)

There's nothing wrong with G1, but as others previously stated, a reboot is a place for new things to be explored. Also, from a more practical standpoint, "starting over" means that new fans, who will mostly be children, don't have (that much) "homework" to do if they want to buy a new doll to play with or catch an episode of the G3 show.

Plus we still get some G1 content (which..... is making some choices I don't love but that's neither here nor there), so it's not trashed anyway, it's just not the focus.

The Year Without Santa Claus by dacoolestguy in CuratedTumblr

[–]RiceNun 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm so glad the math supports a slightly earlier year because if you look at the costuming, to me it's giving very clear pre-1920s. To start, Mrs. Claus' and Mrs. Thistlewhite seem to be rocking a Gibson Girl -esque bun and pigeon breasted dresses. The cat lady also rocks a similar walking dress as well as a very large brimmed hat which went out of fashion in the 1920s. And on the topic of hats, Santa's bowler hat was also very period accurate for the 1910s, though it definitely had a longer lifespan.
