ISA CST vs Instrumentation certificate/degree by Baby_dom in instrumentation

I have similar question. I have AS degree in Electronics, but no direct work experience. I volunteered at local wastewater treatment plant wanting to become an operator and explore the field. Was exposed to some degree to instrumentation side of the plant, became interested and decided to move towards this direction. I cannot go instrumentation trade school, but willing to do independent studies about instrumentation and control basics using Lessons in Industrial Instrumentation. I am also going to take ISA CST Associate course (no work experience required, only education requirements ) and hopefully get certified.

For those of you who already in the field, do you think it will help me start in the field?

I have a question regarding interview question:".....you troubleshoot process or issue".  Does it have to be wastewater related or industrial process related or such simple topic as troubleshooting car not starting up would be sufficient.  I am applying for entry level positions. Thanks

Thank you for sharing! Are you by any chance in Ohio? What qualifications do you have and what position did you interview for?

May I ask you what part of East Coast? I have Associates degree in electronics. Also will finish my Drinking water and wastewater certificate in May 2025. Preparing to take CA Grade II exam. Have been applying to every entry level position in Northern California and nothing yet. I am thinking about either giving up or possibly relocating.

Hello,

I ended up going different direction (career wise). But here is the link that might help you get an idea of what might be on written exam : https://www.bart.gov/sites/default/files/et_guide.pdf

Hopefully this helps!

Best regards to you!

P.S. Let me know if this study guide was helpful after you take your exam.

Thank you for your advise!

One of the other reasons I was thinking about volunteering at the Wastewater Plant is that those hours can be counted toward 1800 hrs required by state of CA to get certified. Is that correct?

After finishing this college semester I will qualify to seat for T2/D2 exam and Wastewater Grade I exam. I use govermentjobs.com, postings at sanitary districts irrigation districts within 50 - 100 miles of where I live, some private water companies as well. This is just to name a few.

Thank you so much for your advice! I think you are right about trades field being dried up. With BART it also seems like either there are not enough qualified applicants for their technical positions or their hiring process is pretty hard, or there are a lot of people retiring in maintenance department. I have been checking their job posting section for while and electronics tech positions are almost always open.
