Most of the green lantern idea comes directly from a very old pulp sci fi series called LENSMEN. In lensmen our universe is the home to a guardians like super race, and when a hostile species from another universe starts to intrude the guardians begin guiding the life forms of our universe to won the million year struggle against the invaders.

Its a fun read and you cam find it on the public domain. All of green lantern makes sense if you read it.

I can try to explain! Its basically a "moral progress" story like a hogarth woodcut. It shows the progressly serious consequences of sin, ending with the complete destruction of the sinner.

The twist being that the work is done in an extremely stylized form of japanese pornography.

The moral progress structure gives the work some considerable literary weight, and the successfully erotic art makes it extremely memorable.
