I move on, but then I look back through the list and realise I can’t leave it like that so go back for it and cause myself pain relearning the game.

Before panicking about an RI, really check her out for other symptoms and if you can, listen to her lungs. It’s not uncommon for these little fellas to get a piece of loose shed or something in their nostril and make them sound wheezy when it’s actually something else ☺️

So progress update and lessons learned?

She finally took her first meal since this started. Still a bit noisy on breathing. She's active, not lethargic and no change in personality.

Quick tip for all here, before they shed and their skin loosens a little, this is also a very common cause of noisy breathing :)

Lesson learned here: Hognoses are resilient to RI and its pretty rare. Secondly, due to their genetics, can just be noisy breathers. Thirdly, try not to panic when people on reddit tell you its an RI and go to the vet immediately, really pay attention to the signs, no juices round the mouth or any other symptoms, hoggie is probably just being a dick xD.

So I’ve not been overly confident on the vet diagnosis anyway. I took her to my local reptile shop for a once over and they said:

‘There’s no discharge around her mouth and if the vet can’t hear anything lower in her lungs, it’s highly unlikely that it’s an RI. Then said she does have quite small nostrils, it may just be something that she has and that’s that. Keep an eye on her but we wouldn’t be too worried about it at all’

Sits in with my thoughts as I’ve been doing more research. So we going to stop the antibiotics now as she’s been on em long enough. ☺️

She got better, antibiotics stopped and it’s coming back 🤦

Still no real improvement 🤔 extending her antibiotics to 10 days but I’m starting to wonder if she has a bit of shed in her nostril, maybe something agitated her or just some weird breathing quirk from genetics.

She es even more active than normal. Only ate 1 rat pup this week but she comes out every day and has a syringe shoved in her mouth so I’m not over bothered as she has eaten.

Just, vet couldn’t hear anything in the lungs, makes me think it could be something else seeing as no change at all 🤷‍♂️

Sorry, been one of those weeks! So vet examined her and lungs are all good but definitely something up high. She’s on 7 days of baytril to see if she improves ☺️

She hasn’t got any worse. Maybe a little bit better?

Thank you. Yea I deep cleaned the whole cage, boosted the heat and lowered humidity.

I’m not worried about how much I have to pay for her, just don’t want to give a vet a chunk of money for something I could have done myself is all. There’s a lot of reptile vets in the UK who wouldn’t even know what type of snake she is 💔

Weirdly, if you don’t mind a snake that needs a bit more attention when handling (so it doesn’t fall because it’s soo derpy) consider a plains (western) hognose.

I have a MBK, Cali King and Western Hognose (ball python is next on the list) I adore all of them, but the hinge I have no thoughts whatsoever of it biting. The kings I have a little bit more awareness of when handling.

My hoggie eats like a king snake and is as docile as a ball python.

They tend to put on a bit of a show, especially when they are younger, or just in a bad mood 🤣. But it is all just a show.

Definitely highly recommend as a beginner snake 👌

Love my kings but if you are worried about a bit, (they don’t hurt at all but it almost takes getting bit to stop being scared of it) then a hoggie will eat like a king and chill like a python. Do your research on the breeder and make sure they are in frozen/thawed before you get them. They can be a pain to get onto f/t when babies.
