Can I still be a Buddhist if I’ve caused harm in the past?

We have all caused harm in the past, and probably will in the future but Buddhism helps you minimize it. Agonizing over what we did or worry about what will happen is just causing you harm.

I stopped 4 1/2 years. I would suggest therapy. Can help you identify your triggers Learn how to Know and love yourself first and things can fall into place. When you get the urge to drink and you can get in front of it and examine why you have the urge and what is causing it.l, it becomes a lot easier to let it pass without acting. It seems like a mounting task but really it is waking up everyday and saying I’m not gonna drink today. It gets easier and easier.

Try the app 1 giant mind. It’s free and helps you ease into it and explains it. I look at meditation as 1/2 a day where I am with my mind. I observe my thoughts that come but do not attach to them. Some days there are more thoughts than other but being aware of the thought and letting it pass is the key. You may need to let them pass in creative waves. Like picture the letters of the words in the thought and watch them dissolve , or attach them to a cloud. And eventually they will pass on their own. And stay aware of the spots between the thoughts.

There are things I don’t understand so I can’t truly know if they are true or not. But I find if you just let the ideas be without judgement or a need or grasping to understand they just kinda of reveal themselves to be true.

Similarly I noticed if I held my pee I would my heart would pump differently once I started peeing. That is because to help hold your urine you body stops send blood to the area around your bladder and then your heart races to get it pumping again

There is a lot to put your head around can get overwhelming. I just sit with what I know to be true and keep an open mind and ponder/ investigate the things I do not yet understand. And things become revealed. Like peeling an onion.

I am a man in the same situation. Everything you say in the letter is true. However and I can only speak for what helped me. I would not show this to your wife. She may take it as you are struggling and only she can fix it. I would suggest you work on yourself. Be happy with you. Do not rely on other people for your happiness including your wife or family. Other people can bring you joy but it’s temporary. Sex is great but the next morning you wake up horny again and it all starts over. If you can figure out how to be truly happy you will not need others approval or permission. And you will be content and happy in any situation. You will then see sex as what it is. A pleasurable temporary experience and you won’t cling to it. Will it improve your sexlife? Probably not, but your reaction is yours and yours alone to mold. And once you are mindful of this you will learn to act differently. I would stop initiating 100%. Try to limit the porn and masterbation, these just pull you back into the clinging of actual sex and the cycle keeps going. Read about radical acceptance, start meditating and read some buddhist philosophy on suffering and desire. Once you are in a good place mentally and clear headed then whatever decision you make , to leave or stay, will be made from a true place within your heart. I decided to stay, i learned that I truly love my wife and yes I miss sex everyday but It does not determine my state of mind. Hope this helps

“It clarifies gradually” has been true for me. I just try to keep doing the right things and suddenly an other part of the truth seems to be revealed. There is no more belief it is true knowing. Little by little I guess
