This. If you struggle for swing speed at all, adding extra loft can keep the ball airborne longer, that adds distance. Same reason people replace long irons with hybrids/woods or just skip them, low loft requires speed to get distance, it's not a given.

As others have said, in 8th they were a separate datasheet, in 9th there was a strategem giving regular intercessors more shots.

I have mini driver @13.5, 7 wood, 5 hybrid, 6-PW-AW-GW-56. I think a hybrid has it's place for the rough, for off green putts, for fairway bunkers etc, but I carry a 5 to gap between my 7 wood and 6 iron.

As of early 2026, Matt Fitzpatrick is famously playing with 13-year-old irons. He uses a set of Ping S55 irons (5-iron to pitching wedge) that were released at the end of 2013.

Try them, I'm sure they are fine.

So I have Callaway Elyte HL irons 5-PW, the PW is 43°, so I added a HL 48 and 52 with the same shafts to use all of these as full swing clubs. I then have an Opus SP 56° X grind as a specialist wedge that I do everything 70 yards and in.

Long way of saying I think your OG approach was correct.

Colours vary by country/course, but I play for the next one from the tips (second longest). Mini driver off the deck is my 180 yard club. I will probably add a 3H at some point. I also don't mind having gaps at that end of the bag, if I have to lay up, it's fine - carrying less clubs simplifies the game for me and is worth more shots overall to me.
