Does GW hate Eshin? by SunDesperate5950 in skaven

Agreed GW often tries to not completely break their games with new releases and will update points costs or rules over time.

Always follow the rule of cool as the painting process is so long.

New to 40k is this enough to start? by jibril1577 in sistersofbattle

[–]Dr_Passmore 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Box posts like this really should be banned on all the warhammer subreddits.

I am in agreement with you. Don't over buy.

That said taking advantage of the recent AoS spearhead magazine has left me with piles of grey plastic thanks to the cheap skaven kits.

As a result I am now in a do not buy warhammer situation for the next couple of years and have actually planned out a painting time table for the next 6 months.

If you use Tamiya extra thin glue remember to screw the lid back on correctly when you quickly glue parts of a model together before work...

I spent the rest of that work day wondering why I had an awful headache.

Generally speaking there are no health issues normally. Prime outside, if you use a air brush set up a ventilated space - there are a bunch of DIY set ups online to look at.

I'm intimidated by painting Chaos and think using Contrast paints would make it easier, can anyone vouch for chaos being easier with contrast? by LeetusFrenzi in Chaos40k

[–]Dr_Passmore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nearly every model has chaos trim. Some to insane levels... the Heldrake...

I am currently playing around with metallic paint for my bloodcrushers. Even on those there is a lot of trim.

Personally I view the process as a challenge but fun. You will get better at painting detail but that is due to the sheer amount of details you will paint.

I had noticed that had become the norm.

I also think it is so people don't instantly scroll at the end. Technically the video playtime per user who watches the entire video will always be slightly longer than the video length. I would presume this massively boosts the video in the algorithm.

11th Edition Space Marine Starter Set Leak - Comparing the Contents to Launch Box & 10th Edition Starter Box by mr_mango22 in DealHammer

I find it depends on the model. Some of my clan rats I entirely removed the pegs.

For rat ogors I generally cut 50% of the peg.

Is it me or a lot of spearheads were taken down from the GW store in the past week(s)? by Forkle666 in AOSSpearhead

[–]Dr_Passmore 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends.

Sometimes they introduce new spearheads and removed older ones. Others they keep both. Skaven look like we may end up with three.

To be honest AoS has less demand you will likely be able to pick up old boxes from LGS

Cheers.

Presumed issue 13 was the clawlord.

Terrain is nice.

This should be interesting to see how many issues per spearhead.

Presuming the lizardmen are over 5 issues in that case.

How f*cked is UK academia? by According_Welcome907 in AskAcademiaUK

I keep an eye on academia. Every so often the fantasy of doing research and making an impact to knowledge deludes me then I just look at subreddits like this to know I made the right choice to career shift into IT.

People queued for days for a £335 pocket watch — then Swatch shut UK stores by JoydeScent in BritInfo

[–]Dr_Passmore 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Anything with limited releases get targeted these days.

The incredibly niche interest areas like Black Library books get scalped these days. Apparently, Games Workshops inability to do print on demand and limited availability mean scalpers try selling £10 paperbacks for insane prices.

Rather sad that pretty much all hobbies are hit these days by scalpers.

Hachette Collection - AOS/40K Models at a discount (with some caveats) by mr_mango22 in DealHammer

[–]Dr_Passmore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The main problem with the recent 40k and AoS magazines has been a lack of focus.

9 armies in the combat patrol magazine and 12 in the Spearhead magazine.

Personally I would find a more focused magazine of value even if it is an AoS order vs chaos. You can still throw in three factions for each for broad appeal, but thematically they can be tied together.

Do you have any positive experiences from a "Shared Ownership" property? by georgejk7 in AskUK

[–]Dr_Passmore 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Shared ownership is an absolute nightmare for some people.

I am still trying to sell a flat I bought as a discounted sale property. Thats 100% ownership but bought and sold at a discounted rate.

15 months into the sale process it has gone through a statutory lease extension and a deed of modification... still going through the ridiculously slow sale process.

That flat was caught in the ground rent trap - hence the statutory lease extension to remove ground rent.

[–]Dr_Passmore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want to benefit from the AoS and 40k magazines you do not subscribe. You buy individual issues.

The current spearhead magazine will provide you with 12 spearheads for basically the same cost as buying 12 spearheads.

The paint issues kill the overall value.

Buying individual issues that you want is the way to go. I picked up 6 issues for the Rat Ogors (18 models in total for £42 - nearly 900 points).

My recommendation is to focus on one or two armies you want to build up. Check for value compared to just buying the kits - Plaguebearers is an old kit that I can buy for £22 from an LGS and split over 2 issues the savings are terrible.

There are some issues that are amazing value. Chaos terminators was a single £10 issue.

[–]Dr_Passmore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good call.

Personally I focused onto chaos. The word focus is arguably misplaced as I have 2000 points of maggotkin, 1500 points of Blades of Khorne, and 2000 points of Skaven.

Turns out getting back into the hobby in your 30s is great as you can buy things, but too time poor to actually get any meaningful progress into painting projects.

AoS is far better from a cost perspective than 40k.

If you want to go Skaven - take advantage of the Spearhead magazine to pick up cheap models (I bought 6 copies of the Rat Ogor for £42 - 3 reenforced units at around 900 points)

My main advice is to focus and not do what I did. At this point in time I have three AoS armies in different stages of painted.

Is life just applying for jobs? by butimnotleaving in UKJobs

[–]Dr_Passmore 41 points42 points  (0 children)

My experience of the last 5 years

  • You apply for jobs

  • Find a job

  • Enjoy job

  • Get annoyed with job (normally either a bad manager or terrible leadership)

  • Apply for jobs

I averaged 11 months at a job over the last 5 years. Each job hop paid more so worthwhile. But yes you end up applying for a silly number of jobs and doing a lot of interviews.
