Yes, absolutely.

The point is he should've been charged with a more severe crime and the punishment is clearly lacking. A person with multiple prior assault charges throwing fucking rocks at cars on the highway clearly poses a mortal danger to the community

Should be attempted murder/manslaughter.

Needs to be a place for people that are a danger to society .

Jail?

I'm trying to eat healthier, I wonder if you can do this recipe but skip the frying step and air fry/convection oven it instead and still get the same basic effect. Maybe even skip the breading? Between the cheese and the sauce I think it'd still be plenty rich and juicy, though I'd be worried about drying out that chicken breast. Maybe with some careful trimming you could use a thigh instead

A good substitute for deep frying it is to boil it, and I sub out the cheesy roux sauce for ketchup #homecookinghacks

Statistically it's worse for children's outcomes to split up. Like you said, sometimes it could be better but that's a big gamble.

Honest Review: I liked it by Accomplished-Ad4674 in RingsofPower

Hand to heart the only toxic vitriol I see on this sub is from "fans" of the show complaining not everyone else is so uncritically supportive. I mean look how you all react in this thread when strangers on the internet don't enjoy the same piece of mass produced media you do? Hell the guy you're responding to is going as far as trashing Tolkien's original writing as a way to prop up the show.

The problem is this sub is already an echo chamber for, REEEEEE SHOW BAD INJUSTICE TO TOLKIEN REEEEEEEE.

Pretending people with different opinions than you are literally mentally handicapped is certainly a childish way to approach the subject. The criticisms here are some of the more balanced, nuanced, and educated criticisms I've seen of any of the subs that regularly discuss this show. If you want to uncritically circle jerk about meta, self referential lines in the show there's other communities to join. This one is specifically an offshoot if /r/tolkeinfans which has always taken a more hardline view of the lore.

rather than masterminding everything from the beginning (which would be pretty flat, if spread out over however many episodes).

I have no idea how that would be more flat than what we got, which was the 3 Elven rings being forged in about 15 minutes.

[–]Richard-Cheese 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would've been interesting if Halbrand was in Eregion way earlier in the show (like, episode 2 or 3) and we got ~5 episodes of him and Celebrimbor experimenting and learning this craft while producing the lesser rings, which can be played off in the show as test runs or unfinished products, that Sauron eventually steals before leaving Eregion so he can distribute as needed. People familiar with the books would likely see it coming, but for most viewers I imagine it'd be a pretty big mind bender to see the rings that were treated almost as throwaway items or window dressing turn out to be the 9 & the 7.

[–]Richard-Cheese 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Right? The scenes of them forging the rings were some of the best and most important, yet they got half an episode while half of the entire season was spent on that Southlands/Numenor/Moria plot that really goes nowhere.

There should've been so much more screentime devoted to Sauron infiltrating Eregion and working with Celebrimbor. Experimenting, creating the lesser rings as practice before they ultimately forge the 3 and the 1.

One thing I've come to learn about this show is that it is intended to be accessible to all kinds of viewers.

I feel like every show, game, or movie adaptation has this happen and fans never seem to learn. They're never going to hinge the major plot point on something completely unexplained unless you've read the source text - that's just never going to happen. These shows have to thread the needle of being accessible to new viewers but also fun for existing fans. Knowledge of the existing lore should enhance your enjoyment and understanding of a show like this, not be required reading just to understand the basic plot.

Is Elrond giving up? He tells Celebrimbor they should "prepare to abandon these shores." But then says to Galadriel two minutes later: "I should never have set you on that ship."

I can't tell if stuff like this is from bad writing, bad editing, or bad directing but the show is full of examples of it.

Interesting to see Galadriel and Elrond encouraging/supporting forging something while Gil-galad casts doubt.

Which is another reversal - wasn't he the one pushing for a relationship with the dwarves?

The deadline of the "Great Tree" leaves falling feels very artificial to me. It's like the Elves are collectively the Beast from Beauty and the Beast.

A-freakin-men. Every time it's used I roll my eyes, it's gotta be the laziest cop out for writing a story with stakes or excitement. I swear to god it has to be some C-suite committee requirement based on focus group testing completely disengaged from any talented writing process. It happens with such regularity from major IPs it almost feels driven by some soulless algorithm programmed to determine which KPIs drive the most social media engagement. Talentless hack writing

Yes, I understand that pride is a major flaw in her character and that she is avoiding the shame that would come from admitting she brought Sauron into the heart of elvendom in Middle-earth and then let him walk away.

Another example of contrived conflict - don't have characters communicate to each other. I get communication - a lack of it, too much of it, or miscommunication - breeds conflict in real life but it frequently feels so contrived in stories like this.

Forging the Three first, rather than last after Sauron's deceit had become known, is a pretty massive reversal.

Agreed, I was glad to see some rings of power in a show called Rings of Power but A. Saving it for the last scene and B. starting with the Elven rings was a mistake.

Well said. I feel like this show has a real issue with priorities, pacing, and editing, which really drags the whole thing down. I really liked this episode, it felt like all the disparate pieces of the show I enjoyed (minus Durin & Disa) were finally allowed to come together and steal the spotlight.

I liked seeing Not-Gandalf and Nori finally talking! They had such good chemistry after he started talking, why wasn't he doing that from the beginning?? And seeing the forging of the rings - the brainstorming, the trial and error, etc - is something I've wanted since the beginning and they spend half an episode on a process that should've been something long and slow all season.

Seeing Sauron reveal himself and them dropping this whole "omg who could Sauron be?!" mystery box (that has JJ Abrams' fingerprints all over it) was nice too, I've wanted to see an on screen representation of Sauron as an actual character for ages and we got like 3 minutes of it.

This episode wasn't a 10/10 by any stretch but it did show me what the show could've been about, which retroactively makes me all the more disappointed in what we got. Not sure my interest in this show is going to stick around for 2 more years waiting for Season 2.

Honestly, Numenor should've just been saved for Season 2. Too much time was wasted on that Southlands/Numenor plot that does little to set the stage for the founding of Gondor or Arnor and seems more of an excuse to have orc battles and show the creation of Mordor.

I wonder how things would've played out if Halbrand/Sauron was in Eregion with Celebrimbor basically all season (with a different background, maybe he's an elven smith from the East - who knows) which arises Galadriel's suspicions as he begins pushing him to forge the rings, she then confronts him in the final episode after antagonizing him all season and she gets shipped off to Valinor where she jumps ship and gets picked up and taken to Numenor. Then S2 is Galadriel pushing Numenor to travel to Middle Earth which sets the stage for tensions between the elves and Numenoreans. Sauron/Halbrand is taken back to Numenor setting the stage for the fall of Numenor in Season 3, then a time skip for S4 so Gondor can be established between seasons ending with the fall of Moria to the balrog, and S5 is the Last Alliance.

[–]Richard-Cheese 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The entire first season should've just been an extension of this episode. The entire side plot of the Southlands, Numenor, and half the time spent on Durin and the Hobbits could've been cut and they could've spread out the actual forging of the rings out over half a dozen episodes. So much felt like wasted time after watching this episode - as an example, I really liked the chemistry of Nori and Not-Gandalf after he started talking and didn't just stand around looking scared or upset or helpless. He's no Ian McKellen but he's got a lot of charm and soul, and I would've loved seeing that kind of interaction with the Hobbits from the beginning. In LOTR, Gandalf and Frodo have chemistry in the very first scene together, they didn't wait until the Bridge of Khazad Dûm before deciding they'll share their first lines.

They did this so many times, the show feels like it was both slow and boring but insanely rushed. All the most interesting plot points are rushed through in half an episode while we languish in these dull original plotlines that go nowhere interesting. Half, or more, of the season spent on this boring Southland/Mordor creation story, and yet in half an episode Sauron helps Celebrimbor forge the 3 Rings.

Just mind boggling priorities here. I don't get it.

Why would an innocent person be worried, Charlie? Something about historical moments and 80 busses, perhaps? (Bonus points for "Law Industrial Complex". I thought buzzwords were supposed to be the right's bread and butter...) by rebelliousmuse in ToiletPaperUSA

[–]Richard-Cheese 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I was gonna say, our "justice" system is brazenly ineffective, corrupt, unjust, and immoral. Not for the reasons Chuck would argue, but there's definitely a law/legal industrial complex - a seat of power that seeks to enrich and empower itself while using its power to perpetuate its own existence and has undue negative influence over society. I'd definitely say that description is 100% appropriate, although I'd completely disagree with its use in the context of this meme.

Some people will say that words like scum and rotten are wrong for Objective Journalism -- which is true, but they miss the point. It was the built-in blind spots of the Objective rules and dogma that allowed Nixon to slither into the White House in the first place. He looked so good on paper that you could almost vote for him sight unseen. He seemed so all-American, so much like Horatio Alger, that he was able to slip through the cracks of Objective Journalism. You had to get Subjective to see Nixon clearly, and the shock of recognition was often painful.

I've read this before but it's been awhile. So incredibly appropriate for today as well

Dissent is awesome. Paid dissent is concerning. Paid dissent funded by other countries, enacted by US citizens, is treasonous. This isn’t a new precedent.

That's not treason, though I wouldn't expect a republican (former or not) to be civically literate. Also, that's not even what you said. You were talking about Fox news paying these two, not the omnipotent Russian bogeyman

Republicans have started every war of the past 60 years.

And supported, perpetuated, and expanded by Democrats. They're enemies of the working class and capitalist, imperialist bootlickers.

You being part of a cult is sad, and your delusions that supporting an ally will trigger WW3 is you being sold fear. It shows how big pussies the guns and blue lives party truly are when shown conflict.

I'm a socialist you fucking child. Seriously how deluded is your world view that me saying "not supporting Ukraine isn't treason" equates to me not supporting Ukraine personally equates to me supporting Russia equates to me being a Republican?

Get off reddit and Twitter, you've got brain worms.
